- Uoila, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Missed one .... Berkeley Course Webcasts
http://webcast.berkeley.edu/courses.php - ChrisAlbon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I think you'd have to watch all the podcasts in a row on three hours of sleep to get the true PhD experience.
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4And ironic title as well, as the Ph.D is a degree marked not by knowledge but proficiency at research skills. The Doctor of Sciences is another Doctorate marked by just knowing a lot, while the Doctor of Philosophy is a mark of knowing how to know a lot and to learn more.
- mozzep, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4if you find college boring, then you probably shouldn't go. The major reason behind college is to study a subject in which you're interested.
- z4r4thustr4, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3MIT Open CourseWare is free, last I checked. Of course it is, it's MIT.
- compgeek, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4definitely digging this pun intended. I've been using the MIT OCW since last year and as such have been able to take a computer science course in java and another in Database fundementals without buying the books. I simply followed the MIT courseware and it covered everything I was being shown in class and then some. not saying everyone can do what I did. the profs just happened to follow the same basic structure so I got lucky but if you can do it I urge you to take advantage of it and even if you use it as just a a supplement to the actual course work it's awesome
- MrLogic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I blogged about this a long time ago... I've got links to a few more (free!) ones that the article missed.

- h4ppydotcom, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2And there was me thinking that The major reason to go to college is to meet interesting and intelligent people that broaden your horizons.
- thescimitar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I agree about taking advantage of OCW. It's certainly not a replacement for a Ph.D., or even a proper undergraduate education, but I was able to spend a great deal more time, on my own time, in the physics department than I ever would have during undergrad. It's free, but they accept donations, I implore anyone who hasn't used it to try, and those who have; donate even a few dollars for its continued support.
- drafhk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2As far as I can tell, these cost money... does an "open-source" version exist? =D
- gsa5383, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1it is absolutely amazing that IT has progressed to this point. i cant wait until you can just send in youtube link to a teacher instead of giving a speech infront of a class
- konaken, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Get 75+ free university courses via podcast here, All from top universities.
http://www.oculture.com/2007/07/free_podcasts_of_university_courses_75_courses_and_growing.html - compgeek, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1@jmcbain no what I'm saying is that in relation to what was being taught at my college here in Canada their notes covered everything and then some. that's why I said ti covered everything I was shown in class. most of which is writtten on the whiteboard or typed out and shown on a projector. point being it's a super useful tool and the notes are very well put together as they should be for MIT
- maheshee11, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Useful post, buddy.
- PoeticExplosion, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This is by far the best, I've been using Berkeley's webcasts for a long time now. I can't believe they missed it.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1"I simply followed the MIT courseware and it covered everything I was being shown in class"
Compgeek, are you saying they have videos of the courses during the school year? Or are you actually attending the courses in person at MIT as a registered student? - tomboy501, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I thought the free podcasts from NASA ...and U. of Cambridge via BBC were pretty cool

- evocatus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0intellectually inspiring
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1What the hell is a 3-course "certificate" in materials sciences going to do for you? (the Stanford one). I tried out these free course things once awhile back... They're just as boring as college courses, but beyond that the similarities end. What's the deal with them all being hard-science topics anyways?
- blackyiraqi, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2this just proves that when you go to a university you are not paying for an education you are paying for a piece of paper
