- p9s50W5k4GUD2c6, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23A habit that has taken years of careful development!
Why change habitual procrastination now, when you can change it later (or never at all)? - ReqX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20The "do it for 5 minutes" trick works really well for me. My main problem is just plain starting things.
- wolfkeeper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21I used to procrastinate a lot, but now I'm able to put it off as long as possible.
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Actually, I'm procrastinating right now. If I read the article, I'll affirm it, and if I set it aside, I'll affirm it too. Dammit.
- po6ot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17What do we need?
Procrastination!
When do we need it?
Next week! - Doubledown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Its not that human beings are lazy... We just don't like doing crap work
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Errrr... isn't browsing Digg generally pure procrastination in itself? So digging a story about combatting procrastination is like what, calling someone on your mobile to tell them about the dangers of mobile phones? There's an irony in there somewhere...
- transeunte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14It's not just laziness. Some people may procrastinate for various reasons. It might be a trauma, depression etc. Reasons that are not easy to simply overcome.
Interesting article with some very accurate examples, even if the author makes it look much simpler than it really is. - BRODEL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Same here.. Once I start something it's pretty easy to keep going though. I need a cure bad.. I have lots of things I simply put off. Not that I don't want to do them, I just always end up saying oh I'll do that tomorrow...
- Silencer7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I know there's been a similar article on digg sometime in the past couple months, but clearly I haven't done a damn thing about it.
Dugg for maybe getting better this time... - greenbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8same here, i should be studying right now.
- o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"Barely completed in time, the paper may actually earn a fairly good grade; whereupon the student experiences...guilt for getting an undeserved grade"
That's absurd! If you are able to write a paper good enough to earn you an A, you deserve an A. Who cares if it took you a month or an hour to complete it? Would Shakespeare's Hamlet suddenly lose its artistic merit if you found out he wrote it in 1 day? Of course not! - merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Ironically, if I read this article, I'd be procrastinating. 'Cause I'm supposed to be working.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I think procrastination is just something those proactive people came up with so that everyone will conform to their deadline driven lives. They get so annoyed that not everyone needs to do everything NOW so they have to come up with some term or condition that needs curing.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Hrmm never heard of that trick before I should try it...soon
- blaksaga, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I guess you could also say that about the love life of most digg readers.
- snorkle256, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8It goes.
Procrastination is like masturbation, its only fun until you realize you're screwing yourself. - Trjn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I've got an assignment due Monday that I haven't started and a test on Saturday that I haven't even been going to the lectures for.
I don't really need to read a paper to know that the reason I haven't bothered starting on either of those things is that I'm lazy and capable of studying/doing enough to pass reasonably well the day beforehand.
The biggest problem with procrastination is that it's very easy to get good at it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"Procrastination: Hard work often pays off after time, but laziness always pays off now."
Indeed. - BadgerOU, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Besides, being lazy would be just not doing it. Procrastinating doesn't lessen the amount of work you have to do, you just don't give yourself enough time to do it.
- stylesP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Procrastinator's Creed
http://www.eskimo.com/~spban/creed.html - bbeahm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I put the "PRO" in procrastination!
- joel2600, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7another link to add to del.icio.us that i will never come back to read
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This article describes exactly me and my revision and discertation at university.
I left the majority of my discertation until the last week, but I still made 60% (a 2.1), I also left all my revision for my finals till the last week but I still made a 2.1.
I know this reinforced to me that I could still do great without really trying. But I know that if I wasnt a quick study I would have totally flunked by degree.
Ah well - fuzzboxer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Wolfkeeper, I believe the correct quote is "I'd like to procrastinate, but I keep putting it off."
- mwebb1984, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Procrastination is only remotely related to time management, (procrastinators often know exactly what they should be doing, even if they cannot do it), which is why very detailed schedules usually are no help."
--- I never thought about it that way, but that fits my case perfectly. - zyopski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This issue affected me so much that I quit a management role 11 months back to take a year off work. The symptoms are so true and quite shocking to read as I suffered from just about every excuse quoted in the article.
I am bookmarking this and plan to forward it to a number of people I know :) Much appreciated. - MOJIRA, on 05/17/2008, -0/+4I wrote an artist statement recently where I identified my greatest phantoms (procrastination) and it really helped. This article hits every possible point for procrastination I think - I was just reading and going.. yeahhh THAT IS WHY... then I minimize firefox and get back to trackmania nations w00t!
also, this daylight savings is helping at all, now im just another hour behind! :S - jimio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@Macgyver, did you RTFA?
- headzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I don't procrastinate, I just don't finish things that I've started. Which is why I didn't read the whole article.
- theWaterboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I almost put off reading this article -- but I read it and it was good!
- BRODEL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah.. the threat of being fired isn't great motivation though. You will only do as much as it takes to not get you fired. That's no way to do things IMO. I like my job because it's what I love to do, but there are penty of things in life I don't feel like doing so I just keep putting them off.
- SoccerBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Lazy is not willing or not wanting to do something for no reason.
Procrastination is more about putting things off to the last minute. - npodges, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i think most of the stuff in the article aplies to me, but i've always considered myself "a good procrastinator"
i suppose we all do, but i always got my work done. if we had a reseach paper in highschool for three weeks, and i waited until the night before(which did happen) i'd start it by 11 pm, and work on it right up until i had to leave for school at seven AM. chances are i put in more hours of work than most of my peers.
one of my teachers never accepted late work from people, by any excuse.
he gave me some of the greatest advice i've ever received.
"just stay up an hour later" and it works! - solidblu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://www.thinkgeek.com/homeoffice/posters/32cc/zoom/
and sushik is right.... but weither you care enough to do something about it is another problem - durzagott, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5*ignore this post*
- rubii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've been a procrastinator for a long time and always considered this a problem. I found a lot of things in this article really apply to me. The reasoning for it they list I can agree with, and I'm glad they list some suggestions to overcome my procrastination. It would really help me school life aswell as projects I work on in my spare time (perfectionist). I really don't think this is a wasted, unuseful study and it's ignorant to say that people study it just to discover that humans are lazy. There's more to procrastination than just laziness.
- dantheape, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3+digg because I have been reading this thead [not the article, but the comments] all day at work...instead of filing
- BiffToffington, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5This article is totally bogus. It misses the NUMBER ONE reason for procrastinating - you're doing something that is more fun than the task put off. Like posting or digging instead of working. Duh.
- TCEuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Me three... god damn this addictive site.
Oh well.. it was worth reading it :D - FallenSeraph, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"In other words... It's time to shut up the voice in your head... telling you you just won't make it.
Until then, we will continue to lead a mundane life of hollow pleasures and missed opportunity.
Maybe we were made for something bigger than where we are."
Are you emo? I'm sorry that your parents didn't hold you enough or whatever, but your life shouldn't be "mudane" and "of hollow pleasures and missed opportunity" Stop being so melodramatic and go find a friend who doesn't write poetry. - Heiliger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Glad it helps.. it is good to know what's happening in the circuits (or in my case, a hamster on a wheel) of the old brain when you get symptoms like all this.
Be careful posting mature, serious comments on this article, though... they spank you for it 'round these parts.
That reminds me.. I need to go listen to my emo and write more sloppy poetry... oh.. and find a friend.
(skips away chanting "i AM a winner... i AM a winner... mom, when's dinner?") - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2wow this is an incredibly well written article. it's spot-on. it's describing me.
- blaksaga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Kind of like right now. I have an exam that I should be studying for but instead I am thinking, "Eh, I'll do alright...I'm going to read some digg for instead."
- afrazkhan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm stunned by how accurate this article is. Even if you think your procrastination is not a problem, read this. You may find it highlights things you never knew you knew.
Ironically though, the only reason I got to read it was becuase I was putting something else off. Now I'm off to do that task! - CoolWind, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4psychobabble, speculation, rubbish.
- EnricoFermi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yeah macgyver the article talks about that, you should read it before you comment
- hausome, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Procrastination is like masturbation. At first it feels good, but in the end you're only screwing yourself. It's also like a credit card: it's a lot of fun until you get the bill.
- Toast1185, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The reason Iprocrastinate is digg....
