- FyreGoddess, on 11/19/2007, -12/+241This is interesting, but the problem that I have with any kind of study like this is that there are so many people who have preferences outside of the mainsteam ideal of "attractive." There are subsets of people who prefer people with glasses, or who are looking for a specific body type/shape.
When you use a website like Hot or Not as a basis for something like this, you're discounting the people who, beyond the intial attraction (or lack thereof) actually judge the attractiveness of someone by their behavior or body language. I'm not talking even about getting to know the other person, but think about that hottie who looks like she smelled something foul all night long. She might be a 10 in a picture, but that look on her face that she's too good to be there is a turn-off for a whole lot of men.
I dugg this because it is interesting, but I think that it's far too flawed and limited to really be taken seriously. I'm still waiting for the studies that look for the reasons behind attraction outside of symmetry of the face and things that makeup can often "fix". - Nightlie, on 11/19/2007, -7/+220I'm not attractive...I don't have a girlfriend =(
- DiggLive, on 11/19/2007, -2/+177When I read this on the upcoming list, I thought it was a new Maddox post.
Damn you. - inactive, on 11/19/2007, -5/+174Welcome to digg, brother
- proliance, on 11/19/2007, -1/+96We know.
No need to rub salt into our wounds. - jayb1rd, on 11/19/2007, -1/+85So basically all this study says is that the more attractive a person thinks they are, the more picky they are in accepting dates. Effing duh?
- moliver21, on 11/19/2007, -13/+94My wife is "hotter" to me then many other women who are "hot" on the surface for more reasons then the way she looks. If you're entering into a relationship based solely upon another's appearance, then you're no different from a dog humping bitches around the kennel.
- Carburetor, on 11/19/2007, -7/+58A Friend of mine, that looks fine if you ask me, never had a girlfriend, and never had love, and never had sex, without paying for it, because he felt like he had no other choice.
he got something like 30+ rejects (He actually counted it once) since he was young.
He's almost 23, and he's pretty depressed and messed up.
That issue, applies his whole life, and he's pretty stucked.
He can't move forward, and he's just hate living..
We tried setting him a date once, but the more he's trying, the more he get rejects and his self
confidence is like -100%
Once, while i maintained his Pc, i looked up his browser, and realized he's browsing a gay meeting sites.
I didn't say anything, because he wouldn't talk to me after, but i knew he's damn strait, after all, he's just trying dating females since we were kids!
After a while+a lot of alcohol, he confessed, and told me he's meeting guys for sex only, because he can't
get it from females, and that's much more simpler for him, because they demand less from his looks, for one night stand only.
I didn't want to hear deatils, but he mentioned he's doing everything with them, but can't kiss them,
cause he's strait!
He told me he's like a damn convict, that don't have any other choices.
And all this mess, because he's not "attractive enough".
Let me tell you something,
We're living in a ***** up world. - simpleid, on 11/19/2007, -5/+54the more i spend time educating my mind and writing software the smarter i get; the less i like most girls, and the less friends i have, the more cynical i become, the more i appreciate subtle aspects of things over what's immediately apparent.... and the more books i buy, further spiraling in to some unknown singularity.
at this point now, there's only two girls i've met in the last... 6 years that i even considered worth while.
*sigh* how much worse will it get? - fotbr, on 11/19/2007, -2/+42When your hands leave you for a prick more attractive, you've hit bottom.
- rabidmonkey1, on 11/19/2007, -12/+50Yeah but your mom is hot.
- Hodan, on 11/19/2007, -3/+38I have to question this studies validity simply because it used HotorNot.com. HAHA.
- DreKor, on 11/19/2007, -3/+37Well, maybe a little different. Dogs don't really take looks into account are are more interested if she's in heat. Which is kind of the opposite of most guys.
- inactive, on 11/19/2007, -1/+35Even symmetry of the face isn't really a reason behind attraction, it's just the most common variable when attraction is studied. Men are more likely to find the picture of a woman with a symmetric face pretty than the opposite, but that doesn't mean that they can't find a woman who doesn't have a symmetric face attractive. There are plenty of models who don't.
Attraction is very simple and a very basic emotion. It's like prefering chicken to pork, it all depends on the individual. It's like when you hear that black African men prefer fat women. It's true that the norm of beauty in "some" africa countries is a little more chubby than in occidental countries but that doesn't mean all black African men like fat women.
The only thing that is common to ALL attractive people is health, both in women and men. Healthy people are just more attractive. - MiDri, on 11/19/2007, -3/+37It's a quagmire, the smarter you become the stupider every one else gets.
- wonderchemist, on 11/19/2007, -12/+43I like to see study to correlates recent beer consumption to the rating a person gives.
- cptl, on 11/19/2007, -7/+34Yeah, he's straight alright....just keep telling yourself that.
How sad is it that we live in a world where gay people are so ashamed that they can't even be honest with themselves? - EnP24, on 11/19/2007, -2/+29isn't this all common sense?
- octagon69, on 11/19/2007, -0/+24great, now you have depressed me. I'm gonna go smoke, I guess I should just find a chubby chick who can cook and has a good sense of humor.
- GreyICE, on 11/19/2007, -3/+26I'm not certain an internet dating site is the most unbiased sample ever. Bad research methodology ahoy!
- HomerS1, on 11/19/2007, -3/+26Of course the universal mitigating factor is $$$. You can be one ugly dude. But if you throw the cash around, your 'attractiveness' to women grows. Show the same '5' pic to some '8' or '9' women. Tell half of them Mr 5 is a trash collector and the other half that he is a Doctor. Dr 5 suddenly becomes Dr 10.
- Chewie67, on 11/19/2007, -5/+28Lower your standards.
- phybere, on 11/19/2007, -1/+24Then you're probably one of the few people who aren't complete tools.
But I must go now, I need to post a picture of myself and my girlfriend on hotornot to see if I should dump her... - tychoides, on 11/19/2007, -1/+23Considering there are white Africans, no, not really.
- stevets, on 11/19/2007, -1/+23In other news: Bears ***** in the woods.
- drakethegreat, on 11/19/2007, -7/+28Thats a good thing cause then you won't turn 40 and realize your a big douche.
- flinx, on 11/19/2007, -5/+25I married my highschool sweetheart....We dated for 5 years and have been married for 13 years. She was smokin' hot back then (majorette->aerobics instructor). And she's even more smokin' hot to me now.
We now have 2 kids and well, we ain't gettin any younger. It's interesting how one's perception of beauty changes over the years.
But even then...looking back it wasn't physical appearance that kept us together even when we were 17. That would have only lasted a couple weeks.
It's about brains, people. If you want to try it some other way, well....go join the study sample on the 'net dating circuit. - inactive, on 11/19/2007, -2/+21This guy's having an epic argument with himself.
- aliengoods, on 11/19/2007, -2/+20That explains why half the women I've met when I was drunk had a stick up their ass.
- Rotzooi, on 11/19/2007, -11/+29...and there you have the whole point of the article. *You* find your wife to be hot, whereas others would rate her "dog". This is because you yourself are a fugly Digger.
- trer, on 11/19/2007, -2/+20Most of us are not attractive. The only reason we think Hollywood celebrities and musicians are attractive is because of the pounds of makeup they wear and the fact that their images are beamed into our heads constantly via movies, TV, internet, magazines etc. Make someone see something enough times and then associate it with beauty and they'll start believing it. It's called conditional learning.
In the end, age equalizes everything. Beauty fades and whatever remains is hopefully what you fell in love with. - jkgm, on 11/19/2007, -1/+19"Beauty is in the eye of the beerholder."
- monsterofNone, on 11/19/2007, -10/+27The example he cited is not a euphemism. "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" is an aphorism. he's an idiot and everything he has to say after that is not worth reading.
(an example of euphemism would be "i was dropping the kids off at the pool" instead of saying " i was taking a *****.") - CheeseburgerBro, on 11/19/2007, -1/+18Strange and no doubt common phenomenon: throughout my romantic life I have always found anyone I'm in love with to be super hot. I may have known that person before I fell for them, and at that time had a more objective appraisal of their attractiveness. Upon developing romantic feelings for them, my perception of their attractiveness always increased exponentially.
So, if you think your girlfriend is unattractive, maybe you're just a loveless *****. Think about it. - penguinpc, on 11/19/2007, -3/+19"...because that's as good as they can do."
I hate that line of reasoning. However, I guess it's a true statement if your standard of beauty is the super model and you compare everyones' attractiveness to that standard. Of course, I'm just writing that because I'm not attractive.
Too bad they didn't do a study on shallowness. - teethman, on 11/19/2007, -1/+16My porn watching study concludes that "attractive" is defined by the seconds it takes to get from flaccid to erect, divided by the number of personal preferences (hair color, boob size, teeth, ect)
The only problem is, its not the same for everybody. - inactive, on 11/19/2007, -1/+16Lol, when everybody but you doesn't get it, it usually means that it's you who didn't get it. Nobody mentionned brains over beauty.
We're just saying that physical attraction can be caused by other things than the normal standard of beauty.
This woman, in her time, was a sex symbol (Frida Kahlo):
http://www.ethingsonline.com/duendemad/arte/58_fri ...
The very fact that the standard of beauty changes from period to period within the same society demonstrates this point very well.
Fat women were once sex symbols in America. Look at porn pics from the 30's, 40's and 50's. You won't see a single rib, not a single toned muscle, not a single "ripped" body. They all had junk in the trunk and saggy breasts and that was as good as it got. - AuburnTigers, on 11/19/2007, -0/+14I'm good looking! I swear! I work out, I'm top dog! And let me tell you, despite what you'd might think, it feels GOOD!
- inactive, on 11/19/2007, -1/+15Er, if that's you in your user icon, you look like a complete douche and dress the part. Don't pat yourself on the back too many times.
- RonBurgundy76, on 11/19/2007, -0/+14Common sense isn't always very common.
- AceLy, on 11/19/2007, -0/+13Is this "friend" actually you?
- skilless, on 11/19/2007, -3/+15Dugg for the mention of girls with glasses.
- wiremonkeymommy, on 11/19/2007, -0/+12http://clearinghouse.missouriwestern.edu/manuscrip ...
interestingly enough, as their inebriation progressed, males rated the pictures of landscapes as more attractive ... so, at some point, even trees were looking pretty hot! - saranagati, on 11/19/2007, -1/+13I really don't think he's trying to be arrogant at all. Really all he's saying is he's taking time to independently educate himself which makes him more isolated from everyone else. Being more isolated from everyone else will either make you not be able to stand yourself or make you very comfortable with yourself so that you don't feel you need anyone elses approval (needing someone elses approval to a point makes for a healthy social human being). Being so much more comfortable with himself, he doesn't feel the need to complicate his life having to deal with someone else who doesn't meet his ideals, however this makes him feel lonely after a while however he's comfortable enough with himself so he doesn't need anyone else. From there he just continues to repeat steps making it impossible to meet anyone else because he's stuck in that loop and the qualifications for that ideal someone keep getting narrower and narrower.
The real issue however is that he's trained his brain so to find out as much information about an object before he decides to interact with it however with people, you can't find out much about them without interacting with them so he chooses not to because by the time he has to interact with them, they don't appear to match his ideal standards.
After saying all this, I think I should replace all of those "he"s in this comment to "I" and then seek some help. - speerross, on 11/19/2007, -1/+13I think the actual urge to have sex will eventually outweigh who, or what, you have sex with. Based on the story above I would think that is what is happening, the fact that people have been caught having sex with a lot of random ***** over the years (recently a guy got put on the sex offenders register for trying to have sex with a bike) backs up my point.
- inactive, on 11/19/2007, -0/+12Omg, you still don't get it. NOBODY IS ARGUING AGAINST THE POINT YOU MADE. It just has nothing to do with this thread.
- Carburetor, on 11/19/2007, -3/+15So how can you explain the 30+ times he tried, and the 5+ times he crashed on someone (female of course)?
If he were gay, he wouldn't hide it, because he doesn't give a damn about what others think.
He feels ashamed because he think he's a strait.
I thought the same as you in the beginning, but after he said he's like a convict, he changed my mind.
That's like saying prisoners that having sex are gays,
I'm not sure.
I don't care if he were, he'll stay my best friend anyway, but i really feel sorry for him. - RyanElston, on 11/19/2007, -1/+13Its because they are hungry......
- hooksie, on 11/20/2007, -0/+12Enjoy having money.
- W00DR0W, on 11/19/2007, -0/+11This kind of ***** is why nerds can't procreate.
