- futureb, on 10/11/2007, -1/+64and the morning boner gene?
- fluidfoundation, on 10/11/2007, -0/+46That's still up in the air...
- kingrooster, on 10/11/2007, -3/+37I'm confused, why would God intelligently design us to kick in our sleep?
- RedStateRetard, on 10/11/2007, -0/+21It's called Restless 3rd leg syndrome.
- fluidfoundation, on 10/11/2007, -0/+20THANK GOD. Please cure this so I can get some damned sleep. If you dont have this problem, you are so lucky.
Science! - sanman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11All these discoveries are going to create a society like that movie Gattaca.
Nobody who kicks in their sleep will be allowed to go into space. - shifty2, on 10/11/2007, -5/+14when my girlfriend kicks me in middle of the night and wakes me up, i initiate the sex. hey, she woke my ass up, im going to put it in
- TenebrousX, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9I see what you did there
- unclemeat, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9... that's a chromosome.
- gmprunner, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7It helps keep us thin. We don't exercise enough during the day, so our body makes us exercise while we sleep.
- Akaji, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8It's hard to isolate that until they penetrate some more barriers in science.
- drewgots, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6the jimmy leg gene!
- kkeith02, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4When I first heard commercials on the radio about this, I thought it was some sort of joke...
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Who's Gene?
- Superfreak77, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Sure she's not using her personal massager?
- theholycow, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Well, here's a joke for ya: That hottie in the picture on that web site can kick _me_ all night...
Now, not a joke: The "print" link. One page, no ads, but no hottie either:
http://abcnews.go.com/print?id=3390545 - Toshibi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Interesting since both my mother and myself have this. It's the weirdest feeling/urge. It feels like your legs have to do something, it nags at you, just wanting to move. Then it happens, but you really don't feel at all satisfied from it, because it starts again. It also seems that the more tired you are, the worse it happens.
- gmprunner, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Im notorious for moving around in my sleep. I could seriously out-kick David Beckham without even being conscious.
- MasterThief117, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2You got me.
- gmprunner, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Something's kicking, but it ain't my leg...
- swordphish, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I once had a dream where I back-handed someone (hard) in the face...somehow, I acted out my dream and punched the hell out of the steel cabinet next to my bed. I was actually awake mid-way through the punch, but could not stop myself. I sufferred a nasty scar on the back of my hand from that interesting incident.
- DMDekoth, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Ugh, I hate this. I constantly feel like I have to move my legs when I'm trying to fall asleep, but as far as I know, I don't kick after I've fallen asleep. So I guess I don't have it too bad?
- Ishepoh, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I have this problem also. My mother and I thought it might be some sort of hereditary gene as we both have it. I am so glad they have found this gene. The medicine that they give you for it "Requip" my mother takes mainly for her Parkinsons, so just maybe these two share some sort of connection.
- smackywentz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Amen brother! It's ridiculous to have to stay up 'til 5am to wake up at 6 because your legs feel like they're hollow. I wonder how productive I'll be now?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Science be praised!
- skyfire1, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I usually kick her back. Dumb bitch.
- finista, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1There's another gene for this.
- thegreatsam, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Explains so much.
- rhabd0mancer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2God is just messin' with us.
- alpine75, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1My wife has this problem and it drives me absolutely nuts.
Sometimes the whole bed shakes from her legs moving. - saturdaysinbed, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1'lol u use the internets u must not have a life'
:/ - Rikka, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I've been told i run in my sleep. Like....i'll be on my side, and start swinging my legs back and forth like i'm doing a marathon.
- happyfappy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I have Restless Leg Syndrome, and it is very painful. You might imagine something funny like Kramer's legs spazzing out, but what it's actually like is quite different. It's a painful neurological disorder (the meds for it were originally designed for Alzheimers) that will make sleep impossible and turn your life into a living hell.
A random jerk or kick while you sleep is not the same as Restless Leg Syndrome -- it's perfectly normal. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I don't have this problem and really haven't heard a whole lot about it but it sounds like it sucks. Grats to you guys!
- rglover, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Hm, I wonder if they can find a gene for my girlfriend giggling in her sleep?
- Pilot85, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yeah... my girlfriend doesn't appreciate the kicking and flailing I do in my sleep. Now I can blame it on the genes!
- cypheroid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1There's definitely some sort of connection because Parkinsons and the drugs for RLS both have something to do with dopamine. Don't quote me on this but if I remember correctly, Parkinsons is caused by lack of dopamine acting on certain receptors in the brain and Requipe is a dopamine agonist.
- therealrico, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I know I kick when I am half asleep half awake, but I just don't see the point of taking medication. Just buy a bigger bed, or go back to the 50's and get seperate beds.
- drgruney, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2It's called having a Y chromosome.
- panicofficer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1What my husband wouldn't pay for the cure. Poor man has gotten bruises.
- cypheroid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I have restless leg syndrome also but it comes up only when I take certain medications. I found the wikipedia entry very helpful for some non-drug approaches. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Restless_legs_syndrome#Lifestyle_changes_and_other_non-medicinal_approaches
I use the running warm water over the leg approach or sometimes when that doesn't work, I play some video games until the feeling is gone. - happyfappy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You must have a mild case. This stuff worked for me a few years ago when it was just a case of mild discomfort (I'd stretch my legs for a half hour or so and be fine). It's since gotten significantly worse, however, and none of these non-medicinal measures will do anything -- kind of like prescribing chicken soup to someone with tuberculosis.
Of the medicinal approaches listed, only dopamine agonists really work to remove the cause of the pain. The others will just kind of dull the pain so you can try sleeping. - Heikell, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1haha sucks to be you guys, i had this when i was a kid and now i dont kick...
- finista, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1In other news: scientists discovered a gene responsible for urge to discover new genes.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1hahahah dugg, man. dugg.
- RobotCitizen, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Have they found the sleep-fapping gene yet?
- millinao, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0That would creep the ***** out of me
- homesicktxn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I don't think you really had this as a child. people generally get this as an adult and an older one at that.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I thought this article was about kicking sleep. There was an article a few days ago that said "sleep is just a bad habit"
- Masefield, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0I decided years ago to make the best of it and use it as a sundial.
