- Kericr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9A recent study of the kid's DNA found some interesting code:
"up up down down left right left right B A start"
That explains it.
+digg - NewEvolution, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Same sort of thing happens with leprosy, actually. Those tall tales about fingers and toes falling off aren't true. What happens is nerve damage to the extremities causes a complete cessation of feeling. Since lepers can't feel their fingers and toes, they cause micro-fractures all the time while doing everyday things like walking and grasping objects. The body eventually re-absorbs the pulverized bone, resulting in stumps for fingers and toes.
Freaky.
I'm sure this kid has the same sort of ***** in store for him. Kind of sad really.... - punisher18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i actually suffer from something similar to what the boy does simplified terms " neuropathy " *not caused by diabetes but trauma* i got it when i broke my neck. it killed off allot of my feeling *nerves* and left me only able o feel pressures and textures. with the occasional hyper-sensation spots that pop up *random spots on areas of the body that basically are in severe pain until the spot disappears.* it really sucks and the weird thing is allot of people have some form of it they just arent able to notice because they couldnt feel the change.
i wish i could do cool as super ***** but the truth of the matter is when i get hurt or that kid gets hurt *him having a BY FAR worse condition than me* we are flippin screwed. for instance my dumbass didnt realize i had a cut on my back and because i didnt know it was there it became infected and was a very serious problem one that was somewhat life threatening because of the depth of the cut. that poor little boy will *until he grows up* will have to have constant medical help just to be sure hes okay inside and out. - spankydigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3dupe
- CaptRR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Poor kid. If you think about it much of our behaviors have been shaped by what pain we feel. Often, it teaches us not to do things that we shouldn't 2 times in a row.
Without that, that damage we can do to ourselves is astounding. - Discosis, on 10/19/2007, -0/+2"Life without pain has no meaning. Gentlemen, I wish to give your lives ... meaning."
Sorry couldnt resist :) - frankendigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3dupe

and not tech news - modpancake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is really sad.
It's not just pain he can't feel -- he can't feel anything. - samfrench, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would like to have a minimal feeling of pain. That would be great.
- Rich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I guess one upside is the parents don't have to worry about the kid playing with himself in public, since he can't feel pleasure as well.....
I remember a story similar to this that was about an Asian woman who had a child like this. She went out of the room to get something, and came back to find her child ate 4/5 fingers.... eww. I would try to find it for everyone, but I'm too lazy to do so. - chiizu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Interesting, because Hell is a world of pain.
- ezkiel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow poor parents and kid.
I never even though of teething going bad like that. - WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1WTF? My comment got truncated!
One more time...
" If you think about it much of our behaviors have been shaped by what pain we feel. Often, it teaches us not to do things that we shouldn't 2 times in a row.

Yeah....just ask anyone who has been married a few times! - robotplague, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dugg...I am currently losing some hair and I thought it was kind of a big deal. I'm such a douche, you forget how fortunate you really are sometimes. Poor kid, parents, everybody, I can't imagine.
- drilldown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Finally noticed the vote dig/dug at the top left. So that's how this website votes....

Interesting. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I wish humans would develop a new kind of pain; one that simply signals the brain, but doesn't "hurt" in the way it does now.
- Darkshine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Now don't people chew on things when their teething because their teeth HURT? But if he feels no pain then why would he have to chew on his tongue?"
Um...yeah. It's kinda hard to chew on your tongue when you DONT have teeth. Now that he does he can't tell the difference and that's why his tongue gets messed up. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Doesn't a James Bond villain have the exact same super power. This kids DNA needs to extracted so clones of him could be breed to form some sort of "painless super army" ... or not
- lildavid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is it just me or were there signs that this story is fake. Such as: They said, and I quote, "His family was shocked when Roberto started teething. He gnawed on his own tongue, lips and fingers to the point of mutilation."
Now don't people chew on things when their teething because their teeth HURT? But if he feels no pain then why would he have to chew on his tongue?
Do you see what I'm getting at? - gamer31, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I went to HS with two brothers that couldn't feel pain. Nice kids, it's a shame really. They'd go around really hurting their bodies and have no idea about it. Sometimes they'd get in fights with each other and I guess it was like something out of a horror movie (as they didn't know when to stop)."
Bjohnsonwsu
you must have been very lucky to meet 2 brothers with an extremely rare disease that only 14 people in the US have today. - oldcyborg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You only hurt the ones you love~~
Cyborg
hanay - Osiriscky3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I see him becoming a super villain like that dude from 007.
DIGG FTW - eastshores, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Now don't people chew on things when their teething because their teeth HURT? But if he feels no pain then why would he have to chew on his tongue?"
That's an interesting point.. However, animals.. we included have some innate abilities / instincts.. so I suppose that for those that experience pain.. it could be a valid assumption that the reason we chew on things is due to that strange pain sensation that is also kind of like an itch. But it may only be an accompanying sensation. - slipaway172, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that is a very sad story. DIGG to spread the work. im sorry for the parents and mostly the child
- foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3the immature comments in this thread are worse than the lies in the recent pysc-today iq test story. does everybody on this world have to say they have a big dick (or brain) and act like an ***** (or eight-year-old)?
here's something you're not going to like:
digg sucks.
peace. - Badaudio, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2thats the saddest story ive heard this week, when i read the title i thought GAARA if u dont kno who that is, its ok....
- Determination, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2*wince*
/me is now feeling better about everything is his life. - curtissthompson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1pain is there as an evolutionary survival tactic of the brain/spine. Besides even if we could function safely without pain, it wouldn't be as enjoyable, as a we need the bad ("pain") to enjoy and appreciate the good, otherwise we take it for granted as the norm, hence the reason why the perfect world, wouldn't be so perfect after all!
- drilldown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0While working in a hospital emergency room, I observed that it is very common to with-hold all pain medications until the symptoms are diagnosed. Bites when you get to a service station and the trouble light in the car suddenly turns off. Same kinda thing. :-)
- phntm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1somehow this reminds me of james bond
- DrDigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1http://digg.com/science/Rare_disease_where_people_who_cannot_sense_pain
Thanks for submitting the exact same article i did two hours later. When digg tells you that you are submitting a duplicate story - actually look at the articles. - greatdevourer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So is the problem of leprosy (sp?) It's why it's such a killer - you can cut yourself and not know till you pass out from lack of blood
- bjohnsonwsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I went to HS with two brothers that couldn't feel pain. Nice kids, it's a shame really. They'd go around really hurting their bodies and have no idea about it. To resubmit the exact same article with a different title is poor digg etiquette, no matter how bad the original title. - MannaPC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've heard of this before... It's a very sad problem =(
- WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1>>" If you think about it much of our behaviors have been shaped by what pain we feel. Often, it teaches us not to do things that we shouldn't 2 times in a row.
Without that, that damage we can do to ourselves is astounding." - BritOverseas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Having kids myself, this is horrendous. The worst moments of my life so far have been when my Mom passed and the moment my two popped out (also two of the best moments but both times it nearly did me in). We were older and didn't go for the Amnio, didn't want to risk miscarriage, so we didn't know if they were going to be "all there mentally or physically" if you know what I mean. Thankfully both of them are a little bit beautifully imperfect/different, a world full of perfect/alike people would be a horrible place indeed.
Since then we have had a couple of late night trips to the ER (for stupid overly protective parent stuff) but I can't tell you what I would do if there was something wrong with them and if anybody tried to harm them or not help them in any way if they were sick, as they say in the U.K, that would be fighting talk, I would be Denzel in that flick where his kid is sick.
My point is. I am a firm believer in Science and Evolution is part of that and as the article says these kids would be lucky to survive 5 years in the old days, what are we doing to our Genome for future generations by keeping people alive that are obviously damaged and suffering and that will never really have any level of normal life? I highly doubt that this poor kid will have children, the human race as a whole is just not that forgiving (possible partners would be in short supply I think) but there are many many genetic afflictions that would have been coded out a 100 years ago (the person would simply perish) that will now be passed on due to the fact that we as a race are programmed to protect our offspring no matter what.
I know there is a lot of good work going on in "Gene Therapy" and selecting babies using In Vetro (a contentious subject for sure but one where I applaud the parents for not wanting to pass on a horrible genetic disease to their kids, wouldn't you do it if you could?) and the like but at the moment we are propagating these diseases by not fixing them and allowing them to be passed on. Much more work needs to be done on erradicating these things and not just treating them in the now. We as a species will not survive until this happens, diseases like this are becoming less and less rare.
And before the haters berate me on this, please read the whole text, I am not saying we should kill off these porr souls or even not treat them, I said they would have to killl me before I would allow them to touch my kids, imperfect or not, I am just wondering for the life my kids and their kids will live. - flowaus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No hangovers after a huge night of drinking however....
- ever, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I used to have IDDQD way back.
- chaos86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0holy ***** i used to know a guy with the same thing. we went to vacation-care together when we were both about 13. his elbows were always huge from swelling, bruised and all cut up because he never learned not to knock them on things during every day life. his eyes were all cloudy, i assume because he injured them sometimes and didnt realize it was bad. he was hugely muscular for his age, probably because he always over excersised, not feeling that he needed to stop. when he played with you, you tried to be nice because he has a problem but he was so rough, practically throwing you around and beating you up because he didnt understand pain. covered in scars head to toe. sadly, the cloudy eyes and drooling (i assume he drooled because of a facial nerve damage injury...) makes him a harsh sight. i fear for his emotional state today.
- Garrick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1There was a recent independent movie on this condition:
http://alifewithoutpain.com/ - knoppy44, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Oh this kid is like Renard The world is not enough
- Chupatumama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0While feeling no pain is unfortunate, feeling pain constantly is a lot worse and afflicts a hell of a lot of people. Being in pain 24/7 and having to take handfuls of pills daily just to numb it a little is the life of millions of people suffering from multitudes of illnesses. I worked as a compassion club a few years ago and its sad to see that science's answer for most diseases is 'take this, this and this and maybe it;ll provide a little relief" and that people's only wish is spending a day feeling no pain. Which is why I find this story so ironic.
Whats sad is the kid only has a 50/50 chance to making it to 40 which means he will most likely die before. Knowing that youre on a shorter clock than most people also - RadiatedAnt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I just lost my lunch imagineing the mutilated tongue part...:Gross I don;t watch enough tv...stupid brain picturing things its so 1940's
- pmac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@ever
Did you ever have IDSPISPOD? - Zanza, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0ewwww, that thing about teething his tounge, lips and fingers that's nasty
- b04155, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Not as bad as this kid, but when I going though therapy for my arm (nerve damage, learning how to hold a cup, etc), I wasn't allowed near flames, etc because I could burn, cut, break, my arm and not feel it.
Not as cool as you would think it would be. - foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0wow. reading that story made me realize that i'd rather not be able to feel pleasure than pain. that story made me sit down and pray to god or whatever that i'm not only alive, but happy and healthy. i pray for that kid, and i don't even believe in god as we know it. hopefully he can feel pleasure; hopefully he'll live a long life; and hopefully life won't seem like some everyday burden to him.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1tech?
- chaos86, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0btw, he was around 13 then, if he's still with us, he's around 20.
