- WriterSD, on 01/09/2009, -1/+33Wow. You know, if anything from Stargate was going to be invented, I would rather it be a *Stargate* and not those darn replicators. :-(
- Wiini, on 01/09/2009, -2/+20Has anyone read PREY, by Michael Crichton?
The book is a fantastic depiction of one possible outcome of swarmed micro-intelligence. It's a fantastic book for anyone who enjoys a little adventure and science. Go pick it up, or maybe someone can find it online?
And yes - it will make you think twice about how this is or isn't a good idea. Worse yet, the book talks SPECIFICALLY about how the rogue AI was modeled after swarm behavior of animals/insects... just like this article. One of my favorite books.

- darlingt, on 01/09/2009, -0/+13RIP Michael Crichton.
- Joest23, on 01/09/2009, -0/+12As long as they don't create Skynet...
- Asianwaste, on 01/09/2009, -3/+15THE GETH!!!!
- christoast, on 01/09/2009, -0/+10yeah man, you beat me to it lol, i miss Charley.
Got Root? - Andrewbot, on 01/09/2009, -0/+10Screw the Geth, the Reapers are what we need to worry about...
- Whisperium, on 01/09/2009, -0/+9I was going to digg you down for spamming your little tool but I won't because:
1. You left a semi-meaningful comment
2. The tool you posted is actually awesome.
It wasn't obvious to me how to use it, but once I put in the URL it generated into my feed reader, it appears to be the greatest digg tool I've seen in forever.
So again, I hate you, and thanks. - SingularityX, on 01/09/2009, -0/+9I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought of them.
- MalarkeyPN, on 01/09/2009, -1/+9Hofstadter practically predicted this "swarm intelligence" when he wrote about an anteater talking to an anthill in Godel, Escher & Bach. Highly recommended reading.
- rhysboy84, on 01/09/2009, -0/+8I wouldn't screw the Geth.
I wouldn't screw the Reapers.
I would rather screw the hot Asari chick, if it's all the same with you. - Wiini, on 01/09/2009, -0/+7I'll admit it made exceptions to life just like most any book, but I didn't find anything to be too grossly unrealistic. Examples?
- Asianwaste, on 01/09/2009, -1/+8Fail spam
- gipp, on 01/09/2009, -1/+7I'll agree it's an entertaining book. But I don't know about "making you think twice". Prey is chock full of bad science. Like, really terrible. I wouldn't take anything in it too seriously.
- lies03, on 01/09/2009, -0/+6I think there is a movie on that.
- kamylyon, on 01/09/2009, -0/+6my favorite non-fiction book of all time
- christoast, on 01/09/2009, -0/+6Yeah actually it was a pretty messed up ending, jack didn't seem to care that much. It was an OK book, not groundbreaking or anything but a good read.
- goerg, on 01/09/2009, -0/+5indeed....
- s043446583, on 01/09/2009, -1/+6Did any one think the start of the article said Wii robots?
- Andrewbot, on 01/09/2009, -0/+5I'll make the call.
I need to kill myself... - MogusMaximus, on 01/09/2009, -1/+6I'm new at coding, be kind:
For I = 1 TO 427
If Digger = Jackass then
Print "Spynet"
end if
If Digger = Doush
Print "I welcome our robot swarm overlords"
end if
If Digger = "Waste of my time"
Print "generic reference to favorite sci-fi series"
End loop - Asianwaste, on 01/10/2009, -0/+5You can have her. I want the one in the gas mask.... wait.. does that make me weird?
- christoast, on 01/09/2009, -0/+5I guess where the swarm actually took a human personality in a parasitic form (Julia), i dont know it was ok.
- javin666, on 01/09/2009, -3/+8Does anyone else see human batteries in our future?
- jetboyterp, on 01/09/2009, -5/+9I, for one, welcome our new evolving group intelligence robot overlords...
- Paulorific, on 01/09/2009, -0/+4Speaking as a future mechatronic engineer, I hope not.
- gabron, on 01/09/2009, -1/+5Not if Sarah Connor has anything to say about it
- gwaggy12, on 01/09/2009, -1/+5Yeah, that was one of Crichton's last good books. I never read "A State of Fear", but "Next" was pretty incomprehensible.
- VitriolAndAngst, on 01/09/2009, -2/+6No. Hopefully, we will develop intelligent humans -- that should really stand society on its ear.
I don't see that it is very useful to make computers Conscious. They are very good at very precise things -- what humans with rare exception are not good at. Our awareness may have as much to do with forgetfulness and making educated guesses based upon incomplete information, than with things like perfect memories.
If someone does develop thinking machines, then someone with the most powerful one can start building the next generation smarter and faster thinking machine. That machine will start making patents, and cornering the stock market, so there are more resources to help make the next generation machine. So, if some SOB wants to run things, he will have super smart machines -- which will be great for the typical self-centered evil bastard up until the point that the machines don't need the SOB anymore.
Ideally, we will start adding computing processes to the human brain. Get a little chip in there to interface better with information, or to make and store perfect memories. We could all be really great at calculus in a couple hours. If we don't humanize and democratize the singularity, it will be a very dark day for our future. That's probably true with a lot of technologies that are going to change the world. We don't need to keep copying the mistakes of the past, where inequities are designed so that only a select few can win.
The money we spent on the Iraq war, could have put everyone in college and bought them healthcare. Or we could have ended world hunger. Think what that could do for our security. But we didn't. Why? Because it makes a lot of SOB's a lot of money to blow things up and siphon off the money. We face that same issue with the coming of machine intelligence. It is going to echo a thousand fold the weaknesses and strengths that we engineer into it. We can either reach for the stars, or figure new ways to blow things up. - FelixdaaHack, on 01/10/2009, -0/+4YES
- MogusMaximus, on 01/09/2009, -0/+4ha, fair enough
- LeviTheSmith, on 01/09/2009, -0/+4http://www.skynetusa.com/index.php?page=shop.flypa ...
WE MUST STOP THIS - Khast, on 01/10/2009, -0/+3I don't know, I don't trust the idea....I think I will keep something that generates a huge burst of EMP nearby...
- Metasquares, on 01/10/2009, -0/+3Or, most likely, both.
- Wiini, on 01/09/2009, -0/+3Tasty Wheat?
- protodon, on 01/09/2009, -0/+3Yes they will become their own species. I firmly believe that synthetic life will become so advanced that it ill be indistinguishable from organic life
- cleanyoungbob, on 01/09/2009, -0/+3Good to see you didn't comment before reading the article.
- idavidtang, on 01/09/2009, -1/+4Too late. The initial phases has begun.
http://www.skynetusa.com/ - identitymatrix, on 01/11/2009, -0/+3Shol'va!
- noumuon, on 01/10/2009, -0/+3you missed this one, eh?

Always bothered me, regarding the end of the book, and Julia. I just wanted a happier ending I think. - inactive, on 01/09/2009, -0/+3We should go get commander Shepard...
- TopherT, on 01/09/2009, -0/+3The man was a neo-luddite, but a pretty decent story teller.
- Muncher, on 01/09/2009, -0/+3And they have a plan.
- chuckDontSurf, on 01/09/2009, -0/+3*spoilers*
It bothered me that Julia never got the royal ass-kicking she deserved. Granted, it wasn't really "Julia," and she did end up getting killed, but her character was so obnoxious throughout the book that I was really waiting for Jack to put a boot up her ass. - Wiini, on 01/09/2009, -0/+3@chuckDontSurf:
lol I can see why you'd feel that way. Although in the beginning, she was just coaxing it along, playing the game, so really, she did do it, even if in the end she was being controlled. She's a ho.
But I still think Jack should've ended up with a hottie at the end of the book. No one deserves to be stuck with two kids and no lady friend if they can help it. - NaturalCauzes, on 01/09/2009, -0/+3Excuse me, robots have been combining since the dawn of...power rangers. Don't forget Voltron, and the various other Japanese robot combo things that are escaping my mind right now.
- cfuse, on 01/10/2009, -0/+3I read the wikipedia page about it, it sounds like a giant load of suck. Crichton is a hack.
- calebh, on 01/09/2009, -0/+3Shhh. Don't remind me that tonight is the last episode of SGA.
