- ieee, on 11/20/2008, -2/+54FYI:
The theory of Evolution does not state that human being evolved from apes. It states that apes and human beings evolved from a common ancestor. - vaylor, on 11/20/2008, -0/+18This is one of my biggest pet peeves. Evolution is NOT a synonym for "Progress". Evolution is a synonym for "Change". There is no ladder we are climbing, evolutionarily speaking. All possible genetic variations are being expressed, and the ones that survive win. That is how evolution works.
- blarch, on 11/20/2008, -2/+17FROM the ape? i think we should at least bring chimps along on the evolutionary ride. Chimps are awesome, we should evolve all species, not just ourselves.
- Screwy1138, on 11/20/2008, -0/+14I appreciate the sentiment in your statement pertaining to becomming a better species eithically, but purely evolutionarily speaking, if we can persist, we deserve to persist.
- greenfyre, on 11/20/2008, -2/+15How about we demonstrate that we deserve to persist?
- covertbadger, on 11/20/2008, -1/+14The fact that you equate social darwinism with actual science shows how little understanding you have of either.
- eco57, on 11/20/2008, -2/+15I suspect there are a number of evolving species at various stages of development within the universe. Discovery of distant planets is practically a daily occurrence, now. What are our chances of being in the lead in an evolutionary context? Very slim indeed. We probably fall in the middle third of a gaussian distribution. Since competition is a core constituent of evolution, are we fated to compete against aliens for resources at some point in the future? Should we then aggressively promote our evolution in order to enhance our probability for success in those endeavors? Food for thought...
- RealmDown, on 11/20/2008, -0/+12And the Uplift War begins.
- yumtummy, on 11/20/2008, -1/+13it sounds like you need to join the air force... you can get your wings, and a tale to tell
- theadvinci, on 11/20/2008, -5/+15I want wings... And a tale.
- covertbadger, on 11/20/2008, -0/+10"Is it the name of the book itself or is it the name of a war inside the book."
Both - it's the 3rd book in a 6-book series. Sundiver is first, so start there. - ApokalypseNow, on 11/20/2008, -0/+10"it also says that universe was created by nothing exploding and life magically appeared out of nothing."
Incorrect - evolution says nothing about that. You are erroneously mixing the Theory of Evolution, the study of Abiogenesis, and Big Bang cosmology. Further, Big Bang cosmology says nothing about magic, nor exploding, nor any violations of the First Law of Thermodynamics. Please gain an actual understanding of the processes involved before you attempt to speak to them.
"evolution also says that god does not exist..."
Evolution makes no claims about your mythology.
"...evolution regulary comes by my house and rapes my children while forcing me to watch."
Evolution is a process, not an entity capable of sexual assault. - ApokalypseNow, on 11/20/2008, -0/+9Actually, we do have a pretty good idea what the skeleton of this common ancestor looked like - about 13 million years ago, Homininae speciated out from the ancestors of the orangutan. About 10 million years ago, Hominini speciated out from the ancestors of the gorillas. About 7 million years ago, Hominina seperated from the ancestors of the chimpanzees. Sahelanthropus tchadensis is the latest common ancestor, with the earliest known human ancestor post-dating the separation of the human and the chimpanzee lines being Orrorin tugenensis.
- ErrorLoading, on 11/20/2008, -6/+15We DIDN'T evolve from an ape. This is the biggest error in wording that causes creationist freaks to go crazy. We have the same common ancestry as apes. We did not come from apes. Apes simply came from the same place as us.
- psion01, on 11/20/2008, -1/+10Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale --
A tale of a fateful trip.
That started from this tropic port,
Aboard this tiny ship.
The mate was a mighty sailing man;
The skipper brave and sure --
Five passengers that sailed that day
For a three hour tour. A three hour tour.
The weather started getting rough --
The tiny ship was tossed!
If not for the courage of the fearless crew,
The Minnow would be lost.
The Minnow would be lost.
The ship's aground on the shore of this
Uncharted desert Isle
With Gilligan ...
The Skipper too ...
The millionaire ...
And his wife.
The mooovie star.
The Professor and
Mary Anne ...
Here on Gilligan's Island! - ApokalypseNow, on 11/20/2008, -0/+8"What are our chances of being in the lead in an evolutionary context?"
Evolution is not a goal-oriented process, so there is no "lead". In an evolutionary context, the only thing that matters is how well or poorly adapted to your environment you are as a population. - wunksta, on 11/20/2008, -0/+8so the christians claim, as they have for the past 2000 years. protip, revelation was about rome.
- dotorg, on 11/20/2008, -1/+9Technically speaking, that's incorrect.
Apes are not a species -- the common ancestor WAS an ape. A statement that we evolved from a monkey or from a gorilla would be wrong. From an ape is not.
In either case, the principal of evolution says nothing about that lineage at all -- genetics does. - hauntedchippy, on 11/20/2008, -0/+8FYI,
Humans ARE apes. - bolo99, on 11/20/2008, -2/+9You can bet when/if humans get off this planet and find a near suitable planet to live on, scientists will do whatever genetic modification required for humans to adapt to that new planet's atmosphere if its necessary for survival- man-made evolution.... people with fish scales, infra-red vision, feathers- a scary thought, but what wouldn't we do to survive!?
Anyway until we purge our human race off regressive neocons and radical clerics/priests of all religions, mankind has no hope of true progressive evolution. - WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -2/+9Whoever wrote that headline should be severely beaten with hard-cover copies of "Selfish Gene" and "Ancestor's Tale."
- whitehatlurker, on 11/20/2008, -0/+7Thank you. I was looking for this comment.
We are apes. - covertbadger, on 11/20/2008, -0/+7Modern medicine doesn't stop evolution at all, it just shifts the selection pressure.
- nowhereelse, on 11/20/2008, -0/+6We'll only be ready when we have enough knowledge. We'll only gain that knowledge by practicing, oh wait.... science.
"If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?" Albert Einstein - ApokalypseNow, on 11/20/2008, -0/+6No, we are apes - we are in the family Hominidae, so we are apes.
- covertbadger, on 11/20/2008, -0/+6Dugg for David Brin.
- WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -1/+7It is NOT nitpicking in the least. Sloppy language leads to sloppy thinking, and sloppy thinking is exactly what leads to the ***** claim that "we're descended from monkeys." We don't KNOW what the common ancestor looked like, but it would not have been a gorilla or a gibbon. It would not have been an ape.
- Disgod, on 11/20/2008, -0/+6If you are not being sarcastic, first of all science does not claim that "[the] Universe was created by nothing exploding and life magically appearing out of nothing".
Scientists can actually take you through the steps, and show you their work and why they believe that their current theories are at least mostly correct.
Second of all that is actually what the bible claims when it says that God poofed everything into existence. So you really can't claim any high ground on the implausibility of the scientific history of the Universe. Your version is actually even more implausible.
But with that last line I think you're just being sarcastic, if you are, nice troll. - Hetman, on 11/20/2008, -0/+6I have seen that you have evolved into a troll since birth. That was very fast when you look at your average evolutionary time scale.
- DOCNM, on 11/20/2008, -0/+6Again. It doesn't matter wheter you include human or not in the 'ape' category (I do), we evolved from an ape.
The ancestor of orangutan, gorilla and the cimpanzees (all great apes) was already an ape. That means that our ancestor was an ape as well. - Hetman, on 11/20/2008, -0/+6Agreed. Exactly why their are still apes and monkeys. Because they fit their natural habitat fine and are able to reproduce and that is all that really matters. Well until we destroy their natural habitat and then they are pretty much screwed.
- cobainirvana, on 11/20/2008, -1/+6tail*
- ApokalypseNow, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5Not quite - modern monkeys and modern man have a common ancestor back down the lines, but that's where it ends. Modern man and modern ape have a closer common ancestor, but one is not a descendant of the other.
- covertbadger, on 11/20/2008, -3/+8Yes, obviously I just said that to make myself feel better. I derive all my self-esteem from comments I post on digg. Sheesh.
Do you get government assistance for that crashing mental retardation you suffer from? I'd rather be a ***** than a moron rendered helpless by their own stupidity. - DOCNM, on 11/20/2008, -2/+7Ape=Hominoidea=Gibbon, Orang, Gorilla, Chimp, Bonobo, Human
So yes, the most recent common ancestors of humans and chimps was an ape.
Also, people should read more Kimura and less Dawkins - Screwy1138, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5Thanks... so many people don't realize that. And this coming from a Christian.
- newms32, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5hey guys i'm gonna type some provocative stuff about religion and evolution. imagine those replies i'm gonna get, hahahaha
- DOCNM, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5don't confuse evolution and selection.
- donkevin, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5Yeah, just put a monolith on the planet.
Make sure it's at least a T1, though. - hauntedchippy, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4Perhaps we should be holding ourselves to a higher standard than natures?
- ApokalypseNow, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4"We can pick and chose, no?"
To a certain extent, yes.
"But to get back to your point, perhaps it has stopped being 'evolution' now."
Evolution is simply the adaptation of a population to its environment and the pressures therein. Since we are now able to heavily modify our environments, the case could be made that it is still evolution, but the pressures are simply those we create ourselves. - Screwy1138, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4I agree with you and disagree with you. They are not equals. But don't be so naive to take the extreme position that they are completely unrelated.
- spriggig, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4When most people say "forever" they really mean for their lifetime or a few generations' span, perhaps at most 200 years. One reason humans have such difficulty intuitively understanding the big ideas like evolution and the age of this universe is their own pitifully short life spans.
***** sapiens as a discernible species has only been around for about 250,000 years, and really we've only gotten our act together in the past 1000 years. That's nothing--we've only just started. Imagine what we'll accomplish when (if) we move past our base instincts and really get organized in our thinking efforts. Too bad none of us will be around to say "I knew ***** sapiens when..." but it's cool to at least have a glimpse of our potential. - covertbadger, on 11/20/2008, -1/+5http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_darwinism#Crit ...
"The argument that Nazi ideology was strongly influenced by social Darwinist ideas is often found in historical and social science literature...The creationist ministry Answers in Genesis is especially known for some of these claims".
To claim that Hitler's atrocities are not erroneously associated with evolution by being labelled as 'social darwinism' is to deny simple historical and contemporary fact. - Hetman, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4You can bite my shinny metal ass.
- k3rfuffl3, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4Don't be dense.
There are numerous other lines of humans such ***** erectus and ***** ergaster which are now extinct. They fall within the ape genera ***** like us, ***** sapiens, and thus are apes.
Just because creationists are ***** stupid it doesn't mean we need to appease them with another brand of stupidity. - redwolfwalker, on 11/19/2008, -7/+11The old Mohammed Ali picture looked like the best one to pick out of the options presented and he certainly was a jump in boxing evolution.
- Dustin00, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4And could somebody move the waste disposal plant away from the fun center, PLEASE?
Intelligent design my ASS! - Screwy1138, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4Lythium... I'd agree with you if the article was ABOUT our genetic ancestors. This was just a passing comment. Ah well, we're really not disagreeing about much here.
- JCEEZ, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4imagine all the new BBQ possibilities
