- trolleyfan, on 07/24/2008, -2/+51If food costs are going up, people will just get more fat. Why? Because cheap food is fattening.
- snea, on 07/24/2008, -3/+29I've already started eating less and it ***** sucks. I'm ***** hungry all the goddamn time, even right after I eat.
- BaseballGuyCAA, on 07/24/2008, -1/+24To anyone sane, the idea of eating that much every day sounds like *****. But have you seen some of the gigantic ***** we've got in this country? They've gotta be running through a good 5,000 calories every day, and that'll bring the average up quite a bit.
- inactive, on 07/24/2008, -1/+17Man I went to Burger King the other day and they had a ***** triple whopper or some ***** like that. Some burger that had 3 meat patties. absolutely insane.....
Fast food restaurants are becoming the new razor companies. At least for burgers....just keep adding one more of each. - inactive, on 07/24/2008, -4/+19Rising of fuel prices also mean it costs more to harvest and transport food.
- IntruderII, on 07/24/2008, -0/+11You could also argue that more expensive food leads to MORE obesity.
Fast food restaurants are flourishing partially because people are living paycheck to paycheck, and fast food is cheap! Good healthy food, on the other hand, can be very expensive. This should be the most obvious cause of obesity, but it is often overlooked. - madeingermany, on 07/24/2008, -1/+11I agree with you.
When will the food companies start decreasing portion sizes?
My Answer: When people can't afford the large portions they sell any more. But currently, a lot of unhealthy food is still way easier and cheaper to obtain than a reasonably sized healthy alternative. - u8muhrice, on 07/23/2008, -4/+14Although the article brings up valid points, I am quite skeptical.
I mean obesity in America is currently at its highest and with the marketing these days, it seems as if many consumers would keep on wanting more and more. I mean doesn't Burger King new Bacon Burger have about 800+ calories? - Dozernotz, on 07/24/2008, -0/+10This is ass-backwards. Hydrolyzed fat and refined sugar are some of the cheapest ingredients available. What people are going to eat less of is good quality food. Nobody is going to get skinny as a result of this.
- Vulcan, on 07/24/2008, -0/+9This is the United States, where the poor are fat and the rich thin.
- AppleJacks364, on 07/24/2008, -1/+10Not only should we eat less, but we also have to become vegetarian? With the cost of soybeans rising 117% I will get right on that...
/sarcasm - Kupe, on 07/24/2008, -1/+9I used to eat a lot all the time. In the last few months though, I've only been eating food with some actual nutrition. It's surprising how much the hunger subsides and how little you need to eat when you consume something that actually satisfies your body's needs rather than ramen or macaroni and cheese.
- dekuscrub, on 07/24/2008, -0/+8The good news for fat people is that fast food prices don't seem to go up much.
In 1985 you could get a cheesburger at McDonalds for like 50 cents. Gas was 70 cents a gallon, and you could buy a home for like $30000.
Now gas is $4.00+ ... the same house costs $200000, and you can still get a cheeseburger for under a buck!!!!!
Fast food is almost immune to inflation. - Hnnnnnghhh, on 07/24/2008, -2/+10The problem isn't "not enough food", the problem is "too many people".
- scabbers, on 07/24/2008, -1/+8Cheap food = high calorie junk food. Someone didn't think this one through.
- Marglar, on 07/24/2008, -2/+8""Considering that the average American consumes an estimated 3,747 calories a day"
that is ***** insane if it is true. I watch what I eat and I generally go 1500-2500 calories depending on what I am doing that day. 2500 being on the day of a tough hike..
fat people will be fat, if it costs them more to do so, so be it.. : - ProfessorSYM, on 07/24/2008, -0/+6Good point.
- Coffeedemon, on 07/24/2008, -0/+6Depends. Are you talking macaroni and cheese made from the ingredients you buy separately in the store or the macaroni and cheeze (z added for legal reasons - misrepresentation of dairy) you find in a box made in a lab? Difference *should* be fairly obvious.
- dig1x, on 07/24/2008, -2/+8All over Europe, anyone with a few feet of ground grows food, raises chickens (rabbits, pigeons, sheep, goat, hogs) -- they buy cheese from the local creamery...
The solution is **LOCAL** food. Grow a small garden, and give the food away to neighbours if you have too much at once. Can some tomatoes this fall.
Sheesh people, you can grow more tomatoes than you can stand on a balcony in a cardboard box lined with a plastic bag.
Remember WWII "Victory Gardens"? Well, think that way. - liuite, on 07/24/2008, -1/+7more people should start growing their own food. growing squash is simple!
- ldw4686, on 07/24/2008, -2/+8Don't waste your time Cry, these are the same people who didn't think the Earth was round, and probably in the same category as the people who thought that the Sun revolved around the Earth. They will never learn!
- Badandy127, on 07/24/2008, -0/+5@Dave: Whiel you're completely right about combos and the fact that the exercise might not compensate for all of those calories, I think you might be overlooking that excercise. The 1 hour of excercise will actually raise your metabolism for the next 12-20 hours...
- Belittle82, on 07/24/2008, -1/+6People won't eat less, they'll just eat less healthily. Fast food is the most efficient food meaning calorie/dollar. Kinda sad.
- squishee, on 07/24/2008, -0/+5The new Whopper Quattro--one patty for each bypass surgery you'll need!
- inactive, on 07/24/2008, -2/+7Let's just start domesticating homeless cats and dogs like China and eat them.....

......until the zombies come of course. - inactive, on 07/23/2008, -8/+13LOL
Geez, a rightard shill who ALSO is a climate denier.
Gee,what a winner.
No, just kidding.
Actually you appear to be another ignorant rightard shill who cheers for war but is too cowardly and ***** to actually man up and enlist.
And like most rightard ***** you can't even link to anything to refute it?
What a pathetic loser.
Why don't you go shout to the other rightards to bury this? - ProfessorSYM, on 07/24/2008, -0/+5Yeah agreed. I don't think people are aware of how many calories they really eat in a day anyway.
Especially if they are going to fast food joints at least twice a day, that's about 1,500-2000 calories right there after you add soda and snacks. - schmevil, on 07/24/2008, -1/+6You're probably eating the wrong foods. Check out the glycemic index for ways to eat less and not feel hungry all the time - whole grains, for example, are more filling than processed, because the body has to put more effort into digesting them. There are also tricks like switching to olive oil, which leaves you feeling fuller than say canola, for the same portion and roughly the same calories.
- 1337chic, on 07/24/2008, -0/+5Most healthy women would be above 20%. FYI. Anything below 18% is unhealthy for a woman.
- ChileanGoD, on 07/24/2008, -0/+5And I was worrying that future generations will have to struggle with overpopulation and misuse of resources. It's about to happen to us.
- madeingermany, on 07/24/2008, -1/+6@Vouksh: And we know from Morgan Spurlock, what happens if you only eat McD and don't exercise.
- beauley, on 07/24/2008, -1/+5Most of us have at one time or other visited grandma's house to partake in her newly harvested tomatoes, or even freshly picked onions in the quaint back yard garden patch. You knew they were fresh because the garden soil had to be washed off those that were dug up.

Grow a Garden, Harvest Truly Fresh Vegetables - LoudMusic, on 07/24/2008, -0/+4You'll eat less because you'll be dead?
- Kenzan, on 07/24/2008, -1/+5I'm thinking people will not eat less.
I'm thinking they'll eat more cheaper, unhealthful food.
Generally speaking:
Poorer equals Fatter. - davewelsh79, on 07/24/2008, -2/+6@Vouksh
You could eat McDonalds every day and _not_ work out and still be slim. It only depends on Calories. (Calories in minus Calories out). A burger might only be 400 Calories. You could eat four or five per day and maintain your current weight.
The combos are the thing to watch out for. They can turn a 400-Calorie meal into a 1000-Calorie meal.
About working out: an hour at the gym doesn't do a whole lot to burn Calories. Getting those fries and pop with your burger probably means running for 4 hours straight. That doesn't mean you shouldn't exercise. There are other benefits of exercise as well such as a stronger heart or increased muscle mass (which will burn Calories for you all day long). - chaiwalla, on 07/24/2008, -3/+7The article could also make more clear that what is necessary is to eat more simple and closer to home. Grow your own salad.
The idea here, that every could stand to eat a bit less, is a good one, but will never happen. The poor will continue to get crappier food, and now, less of it, while the rich will sip their cold Coronas and put another steak on the barbeque. - FuXe, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3subsidization is immune to inflation.
- smacksaw, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3Though the cut you get from BK is a cut in your lifespan and quality of life.
- desertDenizen, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3Rich people sipping Coronas? LOL
What TV show did you watch to learn what rich people drink? - leerayIG88, on 07/24/2008, -1/+4Food is getting expensive...*sigh*
- kelchm, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3indeed.
- smitas, on 07/24/2008, -4/+7Hmm. really eating less is very necessary in this world now.
- Oxygen, on 07/24/2008, -1/+4Thanks for clearing that up for us.
- Badandy127, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3These people don't get what an inferior good is in economic terms. You do.
- beauley, on 07/24/2008, -1/+4Everything looks good, is on schedule and it looks like Ethanol fuel is well on its way to eventually replacing gasoline as a fuel source for our present automobile engines. What we must all consider is that under full-scale production, Ethanol will deplete our food supply.

An Abrupt Reality: Fuel or Food - locke2002, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3Isn't olive oil more expensive than canola oil?
- schmevil, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3I wouldn't say it's obvious - if you don't know anything about nutrition then you don't know what to look for. Some people only consider caloric intake and ignore everything else.
- megadan76, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2Because food will be more expensive?
That is, non-local food. - BoogieManOh, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2squash rocks
- desertDenizen, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2I should add that I agree with the comment, just not the choice of beer.
