- tysat, on 10/12/2007, -5/+55That seems like a little unfair to the goalies, but should make for some higher scoring games.
- RadiatedAnt, on 10/12/2007, -7/+45unfair? how about the spiderman like gloves the goalies use to latch on to the ball I've seen some pretty rediculous saves because of said gloves.
- sithvicious, on 10/12/2007, -4/+41just because the game ends 0-0 doesnt mean its boring. Just look at the Trinidad and Tobago vs Sweden game, it ended scoreless but it was a great game. A lot of things happen in those 90 mins.
- XSforMe, on 10/12/2007, -12/+48Nowadays profesional football is way too defensive, many matches end up in a boring 0-0. If this ball helps out lighen the sport, then hopefully it will the standard.
- jaxxstorm, on 10/12/2007, -6/+38Football is a game where you kick the ball with your foot. The football you talk of (american football over here) is named incorrectly because you refer to a game where the primary mode of moving the ball is in your hands. Yes, you kick for points after a TD is scored, but that hardly warrants the name football in my opinion. The rest of the world calls 'soccer' football, I think its about time the USA caught up with us, although they are too self important for that to ever happen.
*Prepares to be modded down* - starexplorer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28remember when fox highlighted the hockey puck during NHL games a few years ago? Purist or not, fans will quickly shoot down something new if it interferes with the game - or their idea of what the game should be
- iluvatar, on 10/12/2007, -8/+33c'mon guys. zillax was joking.
/please, for the love of humanity, let him be joking - invisiblesun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25really? it's not like the article said that or anything.
- osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25What about the lower accuracy? Wouldn't the forwards get pissed because it doesn't go where they want it? I say it doesn't skew the game much, even if it behaves wildly different.
- thejadedmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -7/+29I would hate playing with it too, from the sounds of it!
- cybersamurai, on 10/12/2007, -6/+28i liked the highlighted puck. as a person who watches the occasional hockey game, it made it more fun so that i didnt have to strain to keep up with the puck all the time.
- Bloc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24Actually i totally agree with you. Nobody cares about the worlds most popular sport, most watched sporting event or even the final which is the single television event with the highest worldwide viewing figures. There is a world outside of America, idiot.
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -6/+26The glowing puck freakin' ruled. I started actually watching hockey when they had it, and stopped when they took it away. Without the glow, it's impossible to see where the puck is and thus impossible to follow the game.
Admittedly, I know hockey fans who hated it, but they never could explain why they hated it. I thought it actually made the game viewable for once. - baptiste, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23I'm not sure this will be shot down by the fans. There have been some fantastic shots from 30+yds out bending backwards into the corners. Soccer fans won't complain about slightly higher scoring matches (though that remains to be seen)
The keepers will complain of course, but the strikers sure seem to like it - and the fact that the ball doesn't absorb water (no stitches - the seams are glued) it doesn't get heavier in wet grass/rain.
I expect this ball will become the new defacto standard at the pro level (already is being used by MLS and one of the European leagues) - jeblis, on 10/12/2007, -15/+34Whether or not this is intentional, a higher scoring game could make it more popular in the US. Baseball has intentionally changed the rules many times to produce a higher scoring game.
Personally I'd like to see it a little higher scoring so we can stop the "Oh the game is over and we're still tied, let's go play tic tac toe to see who wins" - longboarder543, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23I think they should put a weight made of sand or lead inside the ball off-center, so it wobbles around all crazy like those blow up balls from when you were a kid. Then I'd watch it.
- danorak, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22If you believe this then you do not understand the world cup ... it does far more to unite than divide... all these different countries coming together with one goal (excuse the pun) in mind. Makes you realize that we are not all that different from each other. You will always get some idiots that want to cause trouble but generally it is a good natured festival atmosphere...
- mikedpirone, on 10/12/2007, -15/+31@zillax0rz
wow your a doof...wrong football you're thinking of there. he means football in the sense of soccer. it is known as football around the world except for in the US. - royboy81, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Those who argue for more scoring to make the game better don't understand the game... This is from an avid football fan from Texas who was only seriously introduced to the game two years ago when my daughter started playing club soccer and has really become a very good player. I knew squat about the game before, but I thoroughly enjoy it now. Even during a tie, one team will feel highly disappointed, while the other will feel some elation at having salvaged a tie. American's need to learn the game; the game doesn't have to change for our whims. Watch and learn the game and you will see...
- tdogg241, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21Except most of the world.
- vernsan, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20We just got swept totally.
- Area51mafia, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18Total embarassment to watch earlier. Cmon! 0-3...ugly! All the kicks to the goal post...bah!
- socbret, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21We lost because we were overhyped, overranked, and that brought us into it with very a naive confidence. Everyone adopted Landon Donovans mindset (a great player, but one who should be playing in a euro league and not in MLS cause its comfortable), and there was no way we were going to match up against a team with Koller, Nedved, and Rosicky(who did awesome). I hope we can pull through but judging from the game right now Italy and Ghana are gonna put up quite a fight.
I've played with the new adidas ball and it's got an awesome feel for field players, I would hate to be a goalie though. I love the Diadora Serie A ball though. - 0siris, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21You know, if we eliminated goalies we'd have higher scoring games too.
This is the same reason the major leages still use wooden. Your adverage pro can hit all home runs with aluminum bats, making the game more of a race then it is a match - Xfrost4, on 10/12/2007, -9/+23Basketball, too much scoring. Baseball, way too boring. Football is like a chess match. Hockey, no one cares!!! Soccer is a very emotional sport, in which almost all can identify with it. You don't see those fat beer drinking football lovers playing football at the park do you??? When infact you see old people enjoying a game of soccer once in a while. My point is... Soccer is the perfect sport, the world seems to agree. Here in "America" where the media doesn't pay attention it will be hard to make soccer a popular sport. But, don't worry soccer will come out winning in america soon. Since its already the fasted growing sports in american history.
About the ball. Yes, it is like a knuckeball. You can see it right away whenever a striker shoots the ball from 30 to 40 yards away. - simX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Wait, wait, wait. Otto: most Americans watch American football. But in American football, you have to sit there for FOUR HOURS to watch ONE HOUR of playtime. In contrast, with soccer (real football, especially since in American football you often run with the ball in your hands), you only have to sit for 1.75 hours to watch 1.5 hours of playtime. So not only do you get more playtime, you have to sit there less to watch it.
And you think SOCCER is boring?! Seriously, what the *****?! - sbasund, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18It shouldn't be that the ball should evolve to better a sport... the players have to evolve. Soccer is fine the way it is. Take a look at these clips and tell me if they need to change the ball.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=VVodCKR2kNI - danorak, on 10/12/2007, -7/+19Does this not go to highlight how you Americans are shallow if you are are unable to enjoy and appreciate a sport purely for the skill and determination of the players.
Not to mention that you have got to love the ability to watch a 90 minute game with only one 15 minute opportunity for adverts. Surely that is better than a hour of American Football with 2 hours of adverts..... - danbt79, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12A typical American misunderstanding what football IS to the rest of the world.
The reason it is more popular than your sports is because it is so much more to people than American sports are to Americans. Here's an excerpt to help you - paraphrased from foxsports.com, funnily enough.
In the World Cup there aren't any cheerleaders on the sidelines to amuse when the play is slow. There is no PA announcer telling the crowd to make some noise. There is no dramatic music as the ball moves up the pitch. All the noise is generated by the crowd — it's organic and it comes from a place deep in your heart because of the intense love and pride that you have for your country. Now don't get me wrong, Americans love their country as much as anybody else; however, the ideal vehicle to express that passion can only be found in this four-year extravaganza.
Rivalries and politics play a huge part in the World Cup. If you think that the Red Sox-Yankees or Bears-Packers is hot just wait until you're in the stands when England takes on Argentina. It becomes more than a game of soccer, it takes on its very own identity, is a source of incredible patriotism and at times rampant xenophobia. With so much history at stake, a loss can send a country into mourning.
http://msn.foxsports.com/soccer/story/5655244 - clevershark, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13The Americans got a high-scoring game today! The Czech Republic beat them 3-nil.
- ZekeSulastin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13And there isn't professional football in other countries? You've never heard of even Manchester United? Heck, there's even MLS in the US ... just STFU while you still have a chance, dude :P
- fforw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11@ Eccles:
The FIFA ranking is a bad joke. There is no way that the US football team is better than Italy or France or Argentina or Germany. - elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16Oh please all you people. You don't watch hockey to see where the puck goes, that's not important. You watch it to see people beat the crap out of eachother.
- kennyvader, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17It's not soccer. It's football in the entire world except for the insular US. Repeat after me "football, not soccer".
- M2Ys4U, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10well, the opening game was 4-2 for start...
- cooltom2006, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12It's called the FIFA football world cup not the FIFA soccer world cup. Don't see why Americans call it soccer. Their version of Football is like Rugby, why do they have to be so different. p.s USA will loose, but so will England.
- LandStander, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12This is all leading to a 'Crazy Ball' part of the game. Some annoying announcer yells CRAZY BALL! while a buzzer sounds and the normal ball is replaced with a ball that is pretty much like the roller mines in Half-Life 2. It remains uncertain if these new crazy balls actually kill you like the mines....but still....Crazy!
- jenmarsh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I'm new to the fandom of soccer. I watched a few premiership games in a pub while I was in London and Amsterdam on vacation last fall. Lately, I've discovered that we get almost every Premiership game on one of the sports channels we get with our cable.
That being said, I decided to jump into watching World Cup soccer and absorb as much of the game as I possibly could. I might add that one of the most entertaining matches was the Sweden vs Trinidad Tobago, and that was an 0-0 game.
If you're going to watch a game to see numbers flick by on a scoreboard, stick to basketball and football. Soccer does not need scoring for a match to be compelling. Watching the organization of the teams, how they work together and the attempts on goal are enough for me.
Perhaps you just need a general appreciation for strategy in sports. Those who normally are interested in sports and aren't that into the strategy of the game are usually the same ones who only enjoy seeing the highlights of hockey matches with fights or the highlights of a stock car race with its crashes.
People like sports for different reasons, and I feel soccer is quite compelling the way it is. To make scoring more common would really be taking away from the tension that each well-played match provides. - Run4yourlives, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Look at all the comments about Americans not enjoying soccer. The funny thing is, nobody in the soccer community outside of N/A really gives a damn how much the US (or canada for that matter) care about soccer.
If you honestly think FIFA would do anything at all to change the game to appeal to Americans you've got your head up your ass.
Comparing Soccer to N/A sports is like comparing Chess to Go. Structure, rules and set play on one hand to fluid strategy and movement on the other. Both can be exciting, you just need to have a certain level of appreciation for their strengths, that's all. - Bloc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11http://media.guardian.co.uk/site/story/0,,1790565,00.html
Nobody cares about 'soccer' right? - tybris, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Don't be silly, in the football world (meaning, outside US) you're not overhyped at all.
- justice7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Hockey is not emotional and no one cares?
Just watch the stanley cup finals ... the game in Edmonton tonight ... just take a look at the crowd
Yes its a Canadian loved sport, but man.. you should see them go NUTS ..................
Hockey rules and you all know it. - fitzfan, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15"Soccer is a very emotional sport, in which almost all can identify with it".
Im sure all three of the Americans that watch MLS soccer can identify with it. - sithvicious, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8danorak took the words right out of my mouth
Otto
The only time a game ends in a tie during the world cup is the 1st round. After that its always decided by OT or penalty kicks - starexplorer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11good point baptiste - just no blue glowing like in hockey :)
go canes! - breatht, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8If (high) scores make a game popular, where's cricket?
- atezun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"This is why Americans dislike soccer, because *it's boring as hell*.
I'd honestly rather watch paint dry."
This coming from a nation who's national sport is baseball?!?! - ChileanGoD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8CZE 3 - USA 0 --> It wont happen this year. But don't be sad, I hate you the same ;) Isn't great?
- thepharmacist, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13They should call it the "Patriot Cup". Then americans would be all over it.
- gelicia, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14youre right, watching a team sport is exactly like watching some dude work out
