- crazydude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The man tells the truth. Im from bulgaria and a nod means no and a shake means yes. Confusing I know..
- rcomegys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So the story is old? I still enjoyed the read.
- sundancekid503, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And to think I've had it backwards all these years.....
- timeblind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Amazingly he missed India. Yes is an amazing side to side head wobble. It takes practice, very subtle. Then there is the vague resigned wobble to the right which translates roughly to "yeah, ok, whatever you say buddy".
- intoflatlines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"For whatever reason, though, thumbs-up today means OK just about everywhere--except in Sardinia or Greece, where it means "screw you." I'm told that for rookie travelers this makes hitchhiking in Athens a pretty lively experience."
made me laugh - Dobriak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Funny, being born and raised in Bulgaria I automatically switch to the reverse gesturing when I speak with a fellow bulgarian person.
It's not that we are doing it to be different it's just the fact that for us a "No" nod is (up)=No (down)=Way and a "Yes" head shake is (Left)=Yes (Right)=Of (Left)=Course.
Apropos, correct me if I am wrong, but I think the sicilians (or in general people in southern Italy) express themselves the same way.
Weird world we live in eh? - timewarrior, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Babies shake their head so the nanny won't get the food into the mouth.Nod is similiar to the hand gesture "come here".
- Kelvington, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I thought this question had been answered years ago, it was so simple it stems from when your a baby, the taking the nipple created a subtle up and down nodding of the head in a yes nod. And the refusing the nipple, (turning your head from side to side) meant no. Is it any more complicated than that?
- tehnico, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I always heard the "yes" I am hungry, "No" I am not hungry explanation from breast feeding. I don't think the straight dope is actually answering the user's question. Rather they seem to be talking exclusively of customs from around the world.
- cinemafreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its a little known fact that the Beljection tribe of North Dakoto use to punch people in the face when answering in the positive.
- Mushroonaut, on 07/11/2008, -6/+6I fart for no and burp for yes.
- mcbean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good read
- uacheesehead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting read, but it doesn't really answer the question of why we do it..
- coolkid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As far as I know Indians nod for "No" and shake for "Yes".
- history1me, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very nice.
- 0zzy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So confusing...what would chuck norris do.
- dandiemer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0weren't we told 10 years ago that today would be the age of the internet computer?
- Killerah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dugg for the hitchiking in Athens thing at the end.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0LOL
- harshbarj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Is it really that important. I found it interesting as did nearly 300 other people. That alone makes it worth the post despite being a dupe.
- Obvioustroll, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1A *day* ago? Did you read the headline? The article is twenty years old!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0When did Cliff Claven start posting stories on Digg?
- dementia, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Why in the world would you comment that this is a dupe with the submitter on record apologizing for it?
- Slimer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Um...it doesn't answer the question. it implies through statistical deduction that there is a naturally innate human consesus for yes and no based on a sort of x vs y repetitive motion, but does not attempt to explain a biological/or any cause for it...
oh yeah and dupe.. wtf is this doing on the front page... go to sleep you insomniac ***** - Reliant, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Yawn! Someone wake me when it's over!! No Digg! Where's the technology? Yawn!
- CLIFFosakaJAPAN, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Dupe....submitted a day ago

Interesting article though - Marcelo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0That's the second time I've posted a dupe in the past week...neither time did any story come up while I was submitting that was remotely close to what I was submitting. Oh well, not much I can do about it now.
- ryan_merket, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0It doesnt answer the question!!!! i cant digg it

You could have undugg this story, redugg the other... and then reported this one.
3 things you could have done... when it was at only 12 diggs, and you didn't do it.
For the record
