- ShadowFoxxx, on 11/03/2009, -0/+12Ever since the famous 'Pale Blue Dot' picture that came outhttp://www.humanistsofutah.org/images/PaleBlueDot. ... I think it's always been worth the trouble.
P.S.: That's Earth. - syntaxgs, on 11/03/2009, -4/+16Tje aone on right are not takes by a same camara =0
- pstroll, on 11/03/2009, -0/+12It is a neat little hobby, but a hobby that will quickly turn frustrating when you realize that where you live (the imaging location) is more important than the astro equipment you own.
- spiderman0505, on 11/02/2009, -0/+9Sweet pics.
- ghuytro, on 11/03/2009, -0/+8My uncle is really into home astronomy.
It's hard to explain the feeling you get when you view the rings of Saturn with your own eyes in a setting as mundane as someone's backyard.
It's something I hope everyone gets to experience sometime. - MustacheMurder, on 11/03/2009, -0/+6This is one of the most rewarding hobbies in my opinion. To stay warm I drink lots of hot coffee and use hand warmers. To pass the time while my camera does the work I read Digg. =)
- CrimsonFlash, on 11/03/2009, -0/+6I really want to get into this, but the initial purchase is somewhat expensive. I've owned and used telescopes before, but they have all been amateur quality. The telescope I want is about 2k. Ouch.
- stifrontman, on 11/03/2009, -0/+6Few people realize just how much detail it's possible to get with a (relatively) cheap home astrophotography setup. Amateurs are taking pictures more detailed than anything pro's used to be able to produce only a couple of decades ago.
- stifrontman, on 11/03/2009, -2/+7That's not really astrophotography in the sense that this article refers to.
- Dustmuffins, on 11/03/2009, -0/+4I never got to have the feel of it until recently. My girlfriend and I were tinkering with her 4 inch diameter telescope on my driveway out in the boonies where I live. I decided to point it at the brightest object I could find. When I focused I couldn't believe what I saw.
MOTHER ***** JUPITER. IN MY DRIVEWAY.
The planet that I've done all this reading about. It seemed so close that I could see it with such a relatively small amount of magnification. I could make out the Galilean moons orbiting it. There it was, a giant sphere just hanging up there for all the world to see and I had absolutely no idea what it was 5 minutes prior. The next fall (this fall), I changed my major to Astrophysics and have loved it every step of the way so far. - replaysMike, on 11/03/2009, -0/+4Everything in life worth doing is really, really hard.
- inactive, on 11/03/2009, -0/+4A still more glorious dawn awaits us, not a sun-rise, but a galaxy-rise, a morning filled with 400 billion stars; the rising of the milky-way.
- TheMikey, on 11/03/2009, -0/+4That's what she said!
- MustacheMurder, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3Most expensive purchase to get yourself started is the scope's mount. You could get started with planetary imaging for under $400 if you wanted. Check this place out they sometimes have very nice deals on used equipment.
www.astromart.com - Maelok, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3No, but it's awesome anyway. Dugg for the Carl Sagan reference and totally stellar photography. =)
- Rouglead, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2The real picture puts my photoshops to shame. Tho how realistic they look.
- tehWhisp, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2I'm pursuing an engineering major right now... but I've always been into Astronomy. It seems like something that should be more of a hobby that a career choice though so I never seriously considered majoring in it.
- Semprini, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2The mount can be a bitch, I have a wedge on my 10 inch Meade, never can get it just right.
Need an autoguider....$$$$
Even so, with the alt/az mount and my DSLR I've taken some pretty good pics, but I got a lot to learn. - BREZZZ, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2Minor in it. Engineering + anything = good.
- khail250, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2make a telescope yourself, as crazy as it sounds thats what most people that are into the hobby do these days, its not as ridiculous as you think, you pay 2000 in raw materials you can have a 15k telescope. check out stellafane.org
- MaruLono, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1This is one of the more specific categories of photography that they don't teach you in photography school, but its one that I always wanted to learn.
- themastersb, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1I read "Apostrophe" for some reason and got a little confused when I started seeing planets.
- ileftfark, on 11/03/2009, -1/+2Apostrophography is equally important. Its one of those thing's that allow's people to understand what the ***** your trying to say.
- kalvinb, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1I wonder if there would be any noticeable effect, considering the vastness of space between objects, of using two telescopes and two cameras on a single mount to get a 3D view of space.
Obviously the cost of a single telescope plus camera is high enough for most people. - mikeinto, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1Batty from Blade Runner sums up your feelings:
"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I gazed upon the rings of Saturn in a mundane setting as someone's backyard. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die."
You're right about viewing the rings. - ProfessorRiffs, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1I've been seriously thinking of getting into this kind of stuff... would someone care to recommend a good site for getting started? A forum, whatever... thanks kids! GO PHILLIES!!!
- sneaker98, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1I was able to get really good lunar pictures with a manual 6 inch dobsonian using, literally, an old CMOS webcam glued to the eyepiece.
Seriously: http://sneaker98.com/Downloads/Blog/luna01.jpg
Completely worth it. Those were some of my first astrophotos. - Ramble, on 11/03/2009, -1/+1No.
- nowhereelse, on 11/03/2009, -1/+1I was expecting some great pictures of stars.
Isn't ASTROphotography the photography of stars?
