- Phipman, on 06/29/2009, -1/+77Ferrofluids have two phases (solid and liquid) that they change change between when a magnetic force is applied or taken away. The article describes it correctly.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferrofluid#Descriptio ... - ImOscar, on 06/29/2009, -16/+78I couldn't watch the video, but I'm guessing the material doesn't actually go through a phase change. It is just being held together by another force and is not actually a solid.
Not buried as inaccurate because this stuff is cool. - iamnobody8614, on 06/29/2009, -1/+50better video:

- zakool21, on 06/29/2009, -2/+42Very cool short video. Just ignore the writers who don't know jack ***** about how to describe it.

- TheVirus, on 06/29/2009, -2/+26What a worthless article. It doesn't add any useful information (seems like a poor-man's copy/paste of Wikipedia). The video was craptastic as well. There are far better articles and videos about this stuff. I was severely disappointed.

- master_of_fm, on 06/29/2009, -1/+15growing up my mom worked for a company called Ferrofluidics, i used to get samples vials like these and trade them in elementary school for baseball cards and such. And this was over 20 years ago, god I feel old
- scotchw, on 06/29/2009, -0/+13Yes
- myempyrean, on 06/29/2009, -2/+14Like Batman's cape?
- justinjohnson, on 06/29/2009, -0/+12As cool a ferrofluid is, this article/video sucks
buried. - vivaitalia088, on 06/29/2009, -1/+12it's called a test tube.
- rydawg09, on 06/29/2009, -8/+17Where can i buy it?
- hyderalamgir, on 06/29/2009, -0/+8Future ninjas will carry large magnets and a bucket of that
- insanebrain, on 06/29/2009, -0/+8Why does it form little spikes ? Is the magnet made out of little magnetic fields or is it 1 magnet ?
- scotchw, on 06/29/2009, -0/+8Then you're both idiots.
Ferrofluids are really common on YouTube... and in the real world, too. - timothiuz, on 06/29/2009, -0/+8iuwerhkasjda asjkyga ruew tieasdhadg?
- FishHammer, on 06/29/2009, -0/+7what
- Russkull, on 06/29/2009, -0/+5the article actually reads that it has "PROPERTIES OF MORE THAN ONE STATE OF MATTER"
did you read the article or just skim it and assume that what you read on wikipedia was right?
Still just a solid suspended in a liquid. no actual phase change going on. - inactive, on 06/29/2009, -1/+6sounds like a daily asshurt to me
- Tiptup300, on 06/29/2009, -0/+5Don't worry the video was only like 3 seconds anyways.
- scotchw, on 06/29/2009, -1/+6Just because you don't have an understanding of electromagnetism doesn't mean that physicians [sic] don't.
But then, you seem to have a grasp of English which is tenuous, at best, and that hasn't stopped you from trying to write something here.
What EXACTLY creates the force? The soundness of that definition just depends on how "small" you want to go... at the macroscopic level, magnets do, and moving electrical current does. - inactive, on 06/29/2009, -2/+7What, you on a ***** internet diet or something?
- JordanTW90, on 06/29/2009, -1/+5Where can I get the glass condom featured in the video?
- Phipman, on 06/29/2009, -1/+5Haha yes, pretty much the same idea.
- awggie, on 06/29/2009, -0/+4yeah... wrong topic maybe? i mean, i agree, it's ***** she'd do that.. but how does that relate to ferrofluid?
are there iron shavings in her snatch or something?
hah. - kb6110, on 06/29/2009, -0/+4more entertaining than my cubicle
- awesomeideas, on 06/29/2009, -1/+4No. Ferrofluid simply is non-magnetic particles of a magnetic material (magnetic materials simply are materials that can become magnetized, and are not necessarily magnetic) floating in a viscous fluid. If these particles were to become permanently magnetized, structures such as the ones you see when a magnet is present would form. This completely negates the idea of fluid magnets for generators. Plus, a magnet that is not fully comprised of the magnetic material will not have as great of a magnetic density. Nice try, though.

- inactive, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3science is cool
- ba5e, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3Aren't they using this same stuff in some car suspension set ups as adjustable damping?
- inactive, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3thanks but what did i do?
- slydingo, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3I smell a new Nintendo DS Title..

- Encephalon, on 06/29/2009, -1/+3We're only a few years away from the T-1000 now.
- Racer20, on 07/01/2009, -0/+2One of the more mainstream uses of this fluid is in automotive shock absorbers. The fluid's viscosity varies with the current applied, so the shocks can be continuously stiffened or softened in real time.
Corvettes, CTS-V, Audi TT and R8, and the Ferrari 599 and California use this technology.
http://www.autoblog.com/2006/04/29/ferrari-to-use- ... - Encephalon, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2Yes! I was going to post that same video when I read this article. Dugg for awesome.
- akshay626, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2physicist?
- Russkull, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2No phase change my friend. it is still just a solid suspended in a liquid. The tiny particles have just arranged themselves to behave more like a solid.
- r1ptide64, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2Honestly, is there anything amazon.com doesn't sell?
- MortalynFlux, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2Allows you to visualize the magnetic forces in 3D. This could be a good teaching tool.
