http://digg.com/general_sciences/Could_the_world_s ... - sonicomega, on 07/31/2008, -0/+8A+ for finding the references to back up your statement
- 7m7uf, on 07/31/2008, -0/+5What's the gas mileage on that thing?
- inactive, on 07/31/2008, -0/+5According to the demonstration video, it burns 10 gallons/ hr. at 63 mph. So I guess 6.3 mpg.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyb6vnX1My0 - ToastedZergling, on 07/30/2008, -3/+8I'm too young to know all these old school references of tv heroes with jetpacks. Instead, I remember duke nukem jetpacks! ***** YEAH I WANT ONE!
- darny, on 07/31/2008, -0/+5FTA: Just so there is no misunderstanding, there are no actual jets involved here.
It's prop-driven. Still awesome, but prop-driven. - mrbojangles9211, on 07/31/2008, -0/+4This is idiotic. there is no way we will ever have jetpacks. A good sign might be the two men that have to hold him stable.
- Treshnell, on 07/31/2008, -1/+5Now build me a Disc Launcher and my life is complete!
- metalstorm, on 07/31/2008, -0/+4That $100K better include the two people hold on and stabilize it for me.
- Nicksname1, on 07/31/2008, -0/+3Here is a video of the jet pack demo at the air show in Osh Kosh:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyb6vnX1My0 - swordedge, on 07/31/2008, -0/+3no wings, marginal control near as I can tell, needs a lot more work
In the 80's someone designed one based on the small jet engines they use in cruise missiles. It had wings and flaps at the out nozzle to control the thing. The only problem was that those engines were designed to work 10 or 20 hours tops. Don't need more than that for a cruise missile. They were talking about going 150 to 300 mph. The effort died with the designers during a test. - majikmixx, on 07/31/2008, -2/+5http://digg.com/gadgets/Up_up_and_away_man_takes_o ...

Good Video:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=vyb6vnX1My0&feature=rel ... - jsuther, on 07/31/2008, -1/+4Meh, This is a dup of the one I read here in 1957.
- Slackdragon, on 07/31/2008, -0/+3Shazbot! Wish I could digg you up 4 times for the Starsiege: Tribes reference! Once for the Children of the Pheonix, the Starwolf, the Diamond Sword and the Blood Eagles.
- flossdaily, on 07/31/2008, -0/+2I don't want everyone thinking I'm some sort of tool who gets suckered into spending insane amounts of money on personal transportation that is supposed to be convenient but ultimately ends up being a huge hassle and makes me look stupid.
I think I'll just stick to my Segway. - iamghost, on 07/31/2008, -0/+2its 2008 and people have been toying with the jet-pack idea since WWI and this is where we have landed...couldn't this be more like The Rocketeer?
- diggit83, on 07/31/2008, -0/+2What happens if the engine fails? In a small air plane you can at least glide down for an emergency landing....but with this id imagine you just go splat. A parachute isnt going to save you at altitudes of less than 100 feet.
- towjam, on 07/31/2008, -0/+2its more like a jetpack SUV.............that thing is huge, looks hilarious actually.
- Philbert, on 07/31/2008, -0/+2Even better, I work from home.
- versionist, on 07/31/2008, -0/+2"Of course you're going as the crow flies with no stops and starts, so it can't be compaired exactly to car MPG"
Miles and gallons are all that are involved, so yes it can be compared. - mrgodai, on 07/31/2008, -1/+2i don't want to be seen with that thing on me
- lucutus, on 07/31/2008, -0/+1I would think just about everyone would want one of these. I guess I am no different. $100,000 doesn't sound like much if it cuts the commute in half or better. Doesn't sound so great when you think about insuring it though.
- WindReaver, on 07/31/2008, -0/+1You better hang on to that Segway, you might need the guts from it to make this thing stable.
- Philbert, on 07/31/2008, -1/+2Of course you're going as the crow flies with no stops and starts, so it can't be compaired exactly to car MPG.
- Gonasadude, on 07/31/2008, -1/+2FTA: "As such, moreover, buyers will not need a special licence to fly one." As such, moreover? Really?... Sounds like someone needs to go back to college.
- danielf30, on 07/31/2008, -0/+1don't believe them you will still be wanting one 50 years form now :)
- RioMo, on 07/31/2008, -0/+12-Stroke engine... that sounds fun. I hope it comes with a little weed eater gas tank holder because its going to need it.
- stuffradio, on 07/31/2008, -0/+1SUV good to the go sir.
- dazparkour, on 07/31/2008, -0/+1You will appear on digg once a week for a month sporting such headlines as:
(Jet)pac man is now with the ghosts.
and
AWSOME. Man with jetpack. TOTALLY not what you expect. NSFW. - dazparkour, on 07/31/2008, -0/+1I work in an office - other people drive.
- LiveWire530, on 07/31/2008, -0/+1I wonder what happens if you don't get the oil gas mixture right...
- Mithrander, on 07/31/2008, -0/+1hundreds of people in the air with spinning blades of death?! What could possibley go wrong!?
- inactive, on 07/31/2008, -0/+1What traffic? Go to work on a motorcycle!
- wassim2k, on 07/31/2008, -0/+1obnoxious title.
- dazparkour, on 07/31/2008, -0/+1Have you seen early planes where two men had to push them for takeoff?
We just don't have them yet. A better indication is that we can't have our beer in glasses because we end up smashing them over each other. Ah. England - only country in the world where glass is a verb. - ozMP3, on 07/31/2008, -0/+1Wow - 3 whole feet off the ground and two people have to hold it the whole time - not quite ready for prime time.
- tehknotte, on 07/31/2008, -0/+1What traffic? Go watch a star war!
- AminFR, on 07/31/2008, -0/+0I want one and I want it now.
Is there any discount for two? - ElvisMMI, on 07/31/2008, -2/+2And they said this was ***** on Mythbusters.
- Shakermaker, on 07/31/2008, -1/+1Dupes? On the front page!?
Welcome to Digg. - DJRobX, on 07/31/2008, -0/+0A jetpack! Operation! Send him the crazy Hindu!
- LiveWire530, on 07/31/2008, -1/+1How compact. It probably weighs about 500 pounds, so I can imaging the comfort level of strapping it on and powering it up.
- MScrip, on 07/31/2008, -1/+1> "Miles and gallons are all that are involved, so yes it can be compared."
Yes, but the Jetpack could get more MPG since you can go across place that cars can't.
I can visit a friend's house in 2 minutes by cutting across the lake. The same trip takes 20 minutes by car.
Straight-line miles vs. air miles can be different. - cubicledrone, on 07/31/2008, -0/+0First spontaneous launch of one of these, and they'll be outlawed so fast it will turn your hair white.
- bloominoctober, on 07/31/2008, -1/+1What do you mean "what traffic?" The traffic will just move skyward.
- iPood, on 07/31/2008, -1/+1So much bigger than what I expected...................that's what she said.
- meerling, on 07/31/2008, -0/+0Not a jetpack. Personal Flight Device, sure, but not a jetpack.
Side question, how many decibels does it batter your head with? - Oddog, on 07/31/2008, -2/+1gasoline is too expensive. go to work on foot and save money :D
- lorenmccray, on 07/31/2008, -1/+0awesome!!!
- sevvo, on 07/31/2008, -1/+0I'd prefer to have a personal driver. It would be less hassle, cheaper, and just as likely to inspire jealousy.
