- dj_sea2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3...thats why i hate 90% of myspace.
- Juke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I judge new websites based on how long it takes to load.
If it takes longer than 4 seconds, I'll just close the tab. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, you'd be in trouble if you DIDN'T develop the skill to judge sites quickly -- there's an awful lot of web sites out there competing for your eyeballs and most of them are written by lunatics or are 90% advertising or are bogus shopping sites. If you couldn't decide quickly, you'd never find anything useful.
- Moocat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As a web designer, I found this helpful to know, but already thought it was true. It's also true people who can't design sites generally give the worst advice as to "what they want" and eventually they complain about how bad the page looks unless you did it yourself (without their input).
- rojaro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1although this has been posted just two days ago at nature's website, the news itself is anything but new. research on this topic has been done about 5 years ago already and the results were exactly the same than noted in this article. however, a good story for those webdesigners who dont know yet (of which there are apparently a lot out there) :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0True now you mention it, i don't have the time.
To think i almost blanked del.icio.us for it's old GUI.. where would i be without it? - SniperX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0del.icio.us has a horrible layout/design
- AndreMA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To say that the impression is formed in 50ms isn't accurate. The image may be shown for only that long, but the "like/dislike" judgment takes much longer and is based on the recollection of what was seen in that brief flash. So all this study says is what we already knew: that the visual cortex in the brain can form and retain an image very quickly.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This has been proven at the website amihotornot.com
- timewarrior, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was just about to blink this one off, then I just realized what I was about to do.It is true, but it is also good.Digg is the fastest news site.We see hundreds of news and links we don't have enough time for all the crap out there.
- AETAaAS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Im not surprised... its kinda like taht thing where you judge a person, the frist time you meet them, and it has a lasting impression.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0digg doesn't take 30 seconds for me to load
- sedgemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What difference does it make if it takes 50 ms or 20 minutes to decide if something looks good? The moral is if your site looks good people will look on it more favorably then if it looks like a turd. Eureka!
I've been doing my own research on a similar subject... all things being equal if you flash a picture of an attractive person (note the word ATTRACTIVE) you'll have a favorable reaction over the ugly pigs. - fuckingstudent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I couldn't read any of this on nature.news, or whatever; certainly my faith in the veracity of the information was inversely proportionalte to the number of ads for Microsoft quering whether I had 'evolved'. The answer is, of course, that while waiting for long-in the-tooth-horn, Vista or whatever, Yes! I have evolved, I use Mac Os X
- karch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0seconding that del.icio.us is fugly. if only it had a design to match its kickass name
and i will make sure to keep this article in mind for later - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Sometimes Digg takes forever to load... well over 30 seconds."
i would stab myself in the eye with a rusty spoon if digg took 30 seconds to load. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ironically, I don't like nature.com's appearance.
- Junx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How does this study explain the extremely high popularity of web design atrocities such as MySpace, Yahoo, or even CNet's websites from a year or so ago?
- ColdDimSum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if I could find a web page that loaded in 1/20th of a second I would be hella impressed... so they all suck until we get our gigabit connections sometime in the 24th century.
- farlane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I give this article to the problem client as I tell them "There's a 50 millisecond tolerance, the possibility of a botched first contact at every point on your web site and you're gonna mock the design up for ME in your desktop publishing program??"
- 1percent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ever read Malcom Gladwell's "Blink" ?
We do all sorts of judgements on everything in a blink of an eye. - fenix25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I still take a look at the content before i make a final judgment.. you can find some good stuff on otherwise crappy sites.
- spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought that link was horrible looking "like our website?" nope!!
when i first saw digg im like "ooh this looks intriguing!" it caught my eye big time
same with delicious. delicious rocks - JaggedEdge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If i had judged digg in the blink of an eye who wouldve known what i missed...
- laughterkillsme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"My colleagues believed it would be impossible to really see anything in less than 500 milliseconds," says Gitte Lindgaard of Carleton University
LOL! My counter-strike reflexes are faster than that. Also, their website is HORRIBLE ... - spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll be another to say that del.icio.us has a crappy design. There's not enough separation. All the text on that site seems to flow together.
- AETAaAS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Clean designs own.... I mean look at Google
- AuAndCs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1...still no cure for cancer...
- Flashman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ Pseudocyborg:
Yes, but even the researchers didn't expect that "first impressions" would take place in the first twentieth of a second. - Noize, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0its true......
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0are you retarded? delicious layout is sparse and good.
- PseudoCyborg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0You're telling me that it took a study by a group of researchers to make this conclusion?!!? The idea of first impressions has been around as long as the act of judgement itself. This is lame.
- h0dg3s, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Pentarix said "The site this article is posted on is *****."
I thought so too. Pretty ironic, huh? - Vladk1000, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Very interesting article.
