- absolutelytrue, on 05/26/2009, -0/+47I can see how they would be mistaken for UFOs, especially if you've had any beer.
- SemperFly, on 01/05/2009, -0/+16you have good instinct then. lenticular clouds indicate mountain wave turbulence. avoid like thunderstorms.
- gluesniffined, on 01/05/2009, -0/+14Dugg, as a powered aircraft pilot I gotta hate these suckers.
I dunno what you crazy glider pilots do, but I definitely fear the in flight breakup or uncontrolled slamming into the mountain that lurk about when these puppies are around. - rufishinjr, on 01/05/2009, -0/+1089% of a mountain's heat is lost from the top of it's head. Handy.
- doublefelix, on 01/05/2009, -0/+10If I were a pilot I'd go out of my way to avoid those things.
- KaiUno, on 01/05/2009, -0/+8Let's hope school kids don't go "what the *****" every time they ask a question.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/gmp1993/2672108607/ - imright, on 01/05/2009, -0/+6Here in Seattle these happen all the time over Mount Rainier. But about a month ago there were three identical towers of them next to the mountain . Each with about five L.Clouds stacked on top of each other. It was the most amazing cloud formation I have ever seen

- dalectrics, on 01/05/2009, -0/+4Imagine seeing it
- FastZ, on 01/05/2009, -1/+5How can you see an imaginary painting?

- lfrankow, on 01/05/2009, -0/+3As an IT professional, I really love these kind of clouds, because they make great wallpaper.
- AzureRise, on 01/05/2009, -0/+3And you didn't take a picture!?
- MatiBech, on 01/05/2009, -1/+3Lenticular clouds are stationary lens-shaped clouds that form at high altitudes, normally aligned at right-angles to the wind direction. Lenticular clouds can be separated into altocumulus standing lenticularis (ACSL), stratocumulus standing lenticular (SCSL), and cirrocumulus standing lenticular (CCSL).

- dougbarrett, on 01/05/2009, -0/+2They are like the clouds from Death Mountain!
- trucanadian, on 01/05/2009, -1/+2Buried for a poor choice of title.
- Leefa, on 01/05/2009, -0/+1All the witch's brew pictures are taken at the same time, and I was there in person. It is a very eerie experience.
- Mpwns, on 01/05/2009, -0/+1some of those make me want to go find the one ring.
- BananaStickers, on 01/05/2009, -0/+1Sounds contagious...
- YourNameHere1, on 01/05/2009, -0/+1When I lived in North Lake Tahoe CA, I use to work at this restaurant on the lake. So every sunset we would take a break if it wasn't too busy to check out the sunset. So I saw a lot of cool clouds like this over Mt. Rose and across the lake over at Heavenly.
But why is it that everybody thinks UFO's are round, silver, and wingless saucers? Seems a bit cliché. - wondertwins, on 01/05/2009, -0/+1i love how the L. clouds look like little waves that are drawn by 5 year olds.
- Bangaarang, on 01/05/2009, -0/+1Never seen anything like this before, some of them really do look like UFO's.
- tbom, on 01/05/2009, -0/+1The lightning and rain shafts are a dead giveaway that you caught a cumulonimbus. Sometimes you see cool striations on the sides of those too.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cumulonimbus http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenticular_cloud - tyho, on 01/05/2009, -0/+1Yeah....they do.
- skztr, on 01/05/2009, -0/+1I was hoping for clouds that were just the right density to focus sunlight into a lethal mile-wide point of death :(
- humpdave, on 01/05/2009, -0/+1the 4th image down kinda looks like a womans uh, you know....
- inactive, on 01/05/2009, -1/+2This is the most incredible thing i've seen in 2009.
- kotn2012, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1arm?
- Denominator88, on 01/05/2009, -0/+1I actually work in Mount Shasta, which has a few photos on there. The sky is amazing around the mountain, the mountain really affects so much of the climate and landscape.
- daridave, on 01/05/2009, -0/+1Wait, you're saying Beer was created by Aliens so that we would think their UFOs are clouds?! ZOMG!!!! I KNEW IT!!!! /sarcasm
- GregLoire, on 01/05/2009, -0/+1Thanks. I'll never be able to sleep on a plane again.
- caitymac, on 01/06/2009, -1/+2More lenticular clouds over Mt. Rainier in Washington State, near Seattle:
http://www.komonews.com/weather/blog/35631614.html - TheOther1, on 01/06/2009, -0/+1Even Everest has lenticular clouds at times.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/22399560@N00/20920792 ... - marioara, on 01/05/2009, -0/+1that's something you definitely don't see everyday
