- inactive, on 09/20/2008, -2/+6IKE was *****, here is a pic of the most powerful hurricane in the gulf, Rita, nobody remembers it because it didnt hit galveston or new orleans, http://veimages.gsfc.nasa.gov/7957/Rita.A2005264.1 ...
It was the cat 5 that hit my house. - RIPtechtv, on 09/20/2008, -0/+4We are quite lucky in the USA we should get a lot more hurricanes hitting the area but a lot of different factors help us dodge the bullet most of the time. We have the Bermuda high that often picks up stronger storm systems in the Atlantic that picks up systems and just swings them over the ocean and misses land.
We also are lucky with the fact the wind pattern goes from West to East once a system gets near the east coast. This often brings troughs that make the storms parallel right off the coast before it can move inland.
Also Hurricanes go through eye wall replacement cycles where if it get sheared or picks up dry air it will try to fix itself. Just as fast as a storm system can get strong it can also get weak if it moves into a poor area for development or again just picks up dry air often near a landmass. - rockaway17, on 09/20/2008, -1/+3It really is an amazing planet, isn't it?

- cws1, on 09/20/2008, -1/+0Great pics, the Nasa website is really one of the best sites on the Internet!
- JohnnyTrang, on 09/20/2008, -3/+1Nice concept but they should have an artist do a little HDR on some of the images. Now they just look like white blobs.
- Cheep, on 09/20/2008, -3/+1Is it just me or are these pics horribly over-exposed?
- jespearl, on 09/20/2008, -3/+1 wow, nice picture, ..but its a disaster to mankind..
