- CamperBob, on 12/13/2008, -7/+86As long as Catholics vote, this lunacy affects me.
- inactive, on 12/12/2008, -9/+73church's should pay property tax an income tax like any other club-house
- michaelpinto, on 12/13/2008, -4/+61Maybe instead we should encourage scientists to issue policy recommendations on theology?
- FlareHeart, on 12/12/2008, -9/+61If I ever belonged to a group that attempted to manipulate and control my life the way these people do, I would leave. Hence my lack of membership to an organized religion. The control that these types of groups attempt to utilize over the lives of their followers seems immoral and outright wrong to me, so I choose not to belong to any of them.
I am not angry at the Vatican or any other house of an organized religion or cult, I just can't believe the extent to which they attempt to control everything. My life is my own and I intend to live it that way; not under the careful "guidance" of groups such as these.
Thanks but no thanks. - inactive, on 12/13/2008, -10/+61Dear Pope,
Thank you so much for your misguided, uneducated, ignorant, intolerant, self-righteous, psychotic and all out arrogant concern!
Signed,

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/05/08/opinion/08kristo ... - idontlikeyou2, on 12/13/2008, -1/+32Hmmm, because the Catholic Church never try to influence public policy ? Because they don't have huge influence in third world countries on medical or lifestyle chocies ? Because no politicans have ever used their religion to defend their actions ?
You have to be a pretty big fool to believe that the power that they extends end around Vatican. - GoingPostal, on 12/13/2008, -3/+29 Every sperm is sacred,
Every sperm is great.
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite irate. - docod44, on 12/13/2008, -3/+29The Vatican doesn't rule the world. Their time has come and passed and it was known as the Dark Ages. It was called that for a reason, and I'm grateful that humanity took on reason and logic instead of continuing to spiral out of control. They should keep to their own myths and let science continue to better the world, without religion.
- r0g3r, on 12/13/2008, -5/+29The Church has a long record of being wrong on scientific issues. Why should they stop now?
- DanWright, on 12/13/2008, -4/+26Thank god for my atheist upbringing.
- Ninh, on 12/13/2008, -5/+26I'd like Kim Jong-Il's List of No-Nos too if we're already collecting wackjob taboos.
- hawkspur, on 12/13/2008, -2/+21Good idea, maybe we would actually be able to get ***** done and advance on this planet.
- charm803, on 12/13/2008, -4/+22Ever notice how the Mormons who have a history of practicing polygamy are now trying to tell others about traditional marriage and Catholic priests who have a history of molesting children are trying to tell others about what they should and should not do when making a baby?
I am going to envy all the people that are going to be around 100 years from now, looking back and laughing that people ever believed in these things. That is if we don't kill our planet first. - Suricou, on 12/13/2008, -2/+18The article forgets to mention that the Catholic chuch considers any and all forms of contraception to be sinful and forbids it's members from using so much as a condom. The followers mostly ignore this, though. It also campaigns against aid programs which distribute condoms or education that instructs in their use.
- Mokshaguy390, on 12/13/2008, -5/+20Hasn't the fact that the Church has been forced to apologize for previous actions prove that it isn't infallible? And if it isn't infallible, then why the hell should I give a ***** about what it says?
- everlast88, on 12/13/2008, -7/+22Because what the Vatican says ends up creating stupid ***** like abstinence only sex ed.
- charm803, on 12/13/2008, -3/+18Very relevant considering that they have a say in politics, as in Prop. 8.
It was passed because these "leaders" outline what their followers should do.
Birth control is actually being denied in some pharmacies as we speak, and Bush recently wanted to ban forms of birth control, but Planned Parenthood got on the ball and killed the bill a few months ago.
Why? Because it is against their religion. - worldinmyeyes, on 12/13/2008, -3/+15The Vatican - possibly the most underrated source of corruption and behind-the-scenes-influence in our world today. They hold such power and wealth that they have re-written their role in history, so the dumbed down masses have no clue what this "church" is really about.
Adolf Hitler wrote in 1933:
"I learned much from the Order of Jesuits," said Hitler..."Until now, there has never been anything more grandiose, on the earth, than the hierarchical organization of the Catholic Church. I transferred much of this organization into my own party[Nazi]."
As some know, Hitler's SS was based on the Jesuit Order, as was (later) the CIA and MI5/6. What a legacy. - GorfTron, on 12/13/2008, -10/+22How many children will they allow scientists to molest?
- Dralha, on 12/13/2008, -2/+14It's an exercise in lunacy, to attempt to construct a 21st century bioethics from the incoherent ramblings of stone age savages who thought the world was flat and seizures were demon possession.
- Mokshaguy390, on 12/13/2008, -1/+11Dugg for not knowing what condoning means. I guess Jesus wasn't a fan of the dictionary either.
- Mujokan, on 12/13/2008, -1/+11Googled it up. http://www.nytimes.com/2005/05/08/opinion/08kristo ... Took me a while because I assumed it must be "Kristol" not "Kristof"!
- idontlikeyou2, on 12/13/2008, -0/+10Your god sounds like a bit of a dick
- rosco01, on 12/13/2008, -3/+13Tell that to the heretics they burned over the centuries. Over the top? Yes. But the same point still stands, We should interested (and concerned) with what a highly political religious organization is doing. Life and death issues are at stake here.
That said, try googling "ratzinger heretic" sometime, he may have his head up his ass in all kinds of way imo, but reading what the super-rightwing loonies have to say about the Pope makes you sympathize with the guy a little more. - nikki2300dk, on 12/13/2008, -0/+9oops, you forgot the "/s"
- spunalot, on 12/13/2008, -4/+13I can't understand why people continue to support this crooked institution. If you support the Catholic church you support child molestation.
- mattgilberg, on 12/13/2008, -6/+15Hmmmm, I don't ever remember reading anything about Jesus asking his followers to create groups such as the "Pontifical Academy for Life" or the "Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith". The Vatican's influence on Christianity is eerily similar to the Federal Reserve's influence on our economy.
- amoirae, on 12/13/2008, -2/+11Rule 1) Your weave/combover may not be better than Kim Jong-Il's.
Rule 2) Kim Jong-Il does not have a weave/combover. - Chrysalii, on 12/13/2008, -1/+10millions and millions of voting sheep with huge influences on policy and people.
- sodade, on 12/13/2008, -2/+10"Hitler lived his life according to his own doctrine."
I've always wondered when I'd hear the first religious attack on simple individualism.
"Nobody is forced to be in the catholic church."
ROTFL - tell that to the kid who is raised in a catholic family. - mr5150, on 12/13/2008, -3/+11The self appointed gangsters of the God are at it again, telling everyone and anyone what they can and can't do according to their holy mafia code.
I call it their code, cause to date i haven't seen God write or tell squat to anyone but for some inexplicable reason i am to believe/follow the rants of holy gangsters whose conversations/hallucinations with God are real and should be followed?
- eigenweasel, on 12/13/2008, -1/+9I wonder how the Vatican will react when they receive my list of what they are allowed to do and think?
- pjsk8, on 12/13/2008, -1/+9Something about your comment screams "Ignorance."
- Natnie, on 12/13/2008, -2/+10Thank you, Vatican. We'll take that on board.
What's that? Oh! How'd that get in the trash? Aheh... - Dr3w, on 12/13/2008, -0/+7Catholicism Wow!
- Mokshaguy390, on 12/13/2008, -1/+7Say what?
- ripple123, on 12/13/2008, -4/+10id expect nothing less from a institution that lays claim to creating morality.
- Suricou, on 12/13/2008, -2/+8They made a loophole for that - they claim they are only infallable on matters of pure doctrine. That is, they are only infallable in those issues that they cannot possibly be proven wrong on.
They also have a habbit of changing policy through neglect - so as not to contradict themselves openly, they will let a problematic view fade into disuse rather than openly decree a change. - inactive, on 12/13/2008, -1/+7any product they have to scare me into buying, I do not want
- zip000, on 12/13/2008, -1/+7Wow, it's "good" to see that there are Catholic fundamentalists as well.
I remember reading something about these crazies not long ago - I think Mel Gibson (or maybe his father) is a big time "Traditionalist Catholic."
I thought though that the new pope was more conservative than the last one, so they'd be happier with him. I guess not. - GorfTron, on 12/13/2008, -1/+7Blagojevich, is that you?
- inactive, on 12/13/2008, -0/+6They should be allowed to vote, but it also means that we have the responsibility to question their judgment.
- drunkenoaf, on 12/13/2008, -0/+5Ah, a Rangers fan.
- Suricou, on 12/13/2008, -0/+5"Even in a liquid Nitrogen freezer, they only last so long."
Seven years, in the US. In theory they could last longer, but this is a legal limit due to concerns about the long-term health implications of freezing.
To understand catholic views on any of this, one key is to understand that they consider anything that breaks apart sex and reproduction to be a terrible, terrible crime against nature. This is part of why they oppose all contraception (It allows sex without reproduction) and why they oppose IVF (It allows reproduction without sex). In the view of catholic theology, sex and reproduction are not merely linked, but created by God as one and the same act. To seperate them is not merely a crime against nature, but against God himself.
I could never understand why any christian cares about life though... if the believer is going to heaven, why delay them with medicine? It should be no big deal if they die, so there is no point trying to keep them alive. Nonbelievers are worth keeping alive only in order to give them more time to convert. - Suricou, on 12/13/2008, -0/+5Nicaea. There were two councils of Nicaea.
- Suricou, on 12/13/2008, -1/+6He rejected Catholicism, but remained a christian.
- drunkenoaf, on 12/13/2008, -0/+5Kudos to the Monty Python. Can't believe you were dugg down there!
- lumaga, on 12/13/2008, -2/+7The pope also says no to fornication, but people seem to forget that part.
- Suricou, on 12/13/2008, -0/+5Can't you blame both? If not for the catholic church and various other religious institutions, a lot more of that sex would use a condom. I expect testing would also be much more commonplace in some regions, too - in more conservative countries people refuse testing because just admitting they are worried about HIV is akin to admitting they are a slut.
- leatherback, on 12/13/2008, -1/+6Religious followers look to their leaders for guidance. The Vatican serves that purpose for people who believe they are following "God's" dictates. Remember, the Pope is a conduit between "God" and the populace. Many need this type of guidance, they need sin looming large over their lives to "act properly".
Others of us can examine church dictates using reason. So using reason I contemplate the long term advisability of in vitro fertalization in relation to evolution.
Question: What does in vitro do to the long term health of the human gene pool? -
