- MikeOxbigg, on 07/02/2009, -6/+119Boys don't have feelings.
Feelings come from the woman's ovaries and were put there by God to punish Eve for eating that apple....Take a biology class, hippies. - MaTT2011, on 07/02/2009, -6/+93File this under "no duh".
with the rise of American neo-feminism, as in women deserve more than men (not equality), women increasingly demand more and more attention for their problems while marginalizing men because women are delicate little flowers that have been put down by the "man" for far too long.
Whens the last time you saw people sport "Prostate cancer" ribbons on their SUV's? Whens the last time you saw a "stop violence against men" campaign? Whens the last time you saw a female sexual predator get the book thrown at her (hell, if she's even somewhat attractive she gets no jail time and a book deal chronicling her so called "struggles")? Whens the last time you heard about a woman having to pay 50% of all their assets to a man after divorce proceedings? Whens the last time you saw courts automatically side with the man in a divorce case that had two equally qualified parents? Never, that's when.
I'm all for equality, that's what real feminism is all about. But American neo-feminism is just way too extreme and there has yet to be an honest and logical discussion on the role men and women play in contemporary society given how far we've come and the advances towards, and then away, from gender equality. - twiztidsinz, on 07/02/2009, -8/+87I think the most serious problem facing boys that remains unaddressed is that for some reason there are those who think 'emo' is acceptable.
- smacksaw, on 07/02/2009, -6/+50Saying that boys and girls are alike is sexism. Funny how that's been flipped around, and pointing out the innate biological and cultural differences is called sexism.
- LonelyTylenoL, on 07/02/2009, -12/+54It's that mentality that is causing the problem.
- tommybeeasy, on 07/02/2009, -1/+43Simply put, boys can have no expectation of support, because as a child, reaching out for help is ridiculed and demeaned. Boys are taught that if things don't work out for them, it's because they're either too lazy or too stupid, regardless of whether or not they ever had even the smallest chance of success. With a generation of young men coming of age at a time when prosperity and opportunity are at an epic low, whose self worth is tied directly to their achievement, and little to no hope of improvement, we're looking at a pretty ***** future. I wish I could just be pretty and get a boob job.
- notcarby, on 07/02/2009, -2/+41'Emo' IS part of the problem. Parents need to teach their kids how to correctly express themselves. 'emo' and chauvinistic prick are both incorrect.
- XBebop, on 07/02/2009, -2/+41But only women can have problems!
- Grolsch, on 07/02/2009, -2/+39Man, I see in fight club the strongest and smartest men who've ever lived. I see all this potential, and I see squandering. God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy ***** we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off.
- bobjrn2, on 07/02/2009, -0/+37This probably has a lot to do with boys are pressured to be good at sports and god forbid they be "nerdy" or they might get beat up. Society does need to change. Being smart used to be cool, but now it is looked at as social suicide.
- smacksaw, on 07/02/2009, -0/+36A woman's ovaries are responsible for her feelings, a man's balls are responsible for his thought. Either way, those little oval-shaped thingies are trouble.
- LennyPear, on 07/02/2009, -1/+35There's an interesting book called "Boys Adrift" by Dr. Leonard Sax on this very subject. He examines social and medical causes for the emasculation of an entire generation.
Scary stuff. - smash20, on 07/02/2009, -37/+68Man up.
- Zomgondo, on 07/02/2009, -4/+28That's the problem, we're not teaching them what "man up" means. PRO TIP: It doesn't mean shoot and/or beat the crap out of people because someone hurt your feeling. It means suck it up and move on with your life.
- pcmart03, on 07/02/2009, -0/+22I completely agree. The whole idea of manliness seems to have been lost. Too many boys assume being manly means being tough, when really that's not a very big part of it. I know plenty of people I consider manly who I could probably beat up (not that I would want to). A man should be able to take care of himself and those he cares about. He needs to know his limitations and be willing to ask for help or advice when he needs it. He also needs to be receptive when another guy comes to him for help. So yes, telling a lost depressed boy to simply man up is part of the problem, but helping that boy become a man is exactly what we should be doing.
- Rogor, on 07/02/2009, -11/+31I imagine my views wont be taken well but as a non American who has been to America often I can say the average young American male comes across like a uneducated loser, and thats pretty much the focus of foriegners travelling in America speaking in their native language discussions, whats with all the wigger gear? Its like the entire young male population is designed to be a failure at life. I have no idea if this is Hollywood or what but its kinda embarrassing from a Asian point of view. Also for a country which holds itself up to the world as "all men are created equal" you sure as hell have alot of special interest groups, commissions for women, commisons for blacks commissions for gay policeman, what now a commission for depressed kids whatever happened to the government being blind to all this stuff? maybe you know, treating every human as equal?. Your fractured society isnt a strength, look at how you handle natural disasters. Ive never been to another country that has as many minority checkboxes on government forms as America does even countries like Iran dont have as many government sponsored special interest support groups. Anyway flame away but id say everyone on here who isnt American will be nodding silently.
- HarveyTian, on 07/02/2009, -1/+19I dunno why you're getting dug down. Maybe some people were in a rush to get home and dropped and broke their sarcasm detectors... I shall digg you up.
- elnerdo, on 07/02/2009, -0/+17One interesting thing I read once claimed that for nearly everything, the bell curve for men is broader than the bell curve for women. This would mean that there are more male geniuses, and more male world-record holders, etc (Something that's somewhat-generally seen), and that there are more male morons and total degenerates (something else that's generally seen) in the world than there are female geniuses/morons.
It was explained in a natural selection sense: Since males are less important to the survival of the race (A man can have a child every hour, whereas a woman can have one only every nine months), they are more likely to develop in more random ways, to allow for more differences and diversity, without risking the survival of the poulation. - spriggig, on 07/02/2009, -6/+23It may sound barbaric to some but in my house, I bring home the money and mom stays home and hands out the hugs and kisses to the kids. We've never used a babysitter, the kids go with us everywhere and they behave themselves while we're out. The example we set is that we don't smoke or drink and I go to work everyday and bring home a paycheck every two weeks like clockwork. Since my wife doesn't work, we don't have a lot of "disposable income" (whatever the hell that is) so we buy used cars and drive them into the ground (my daily commuter is a 89 Camry with 200k on it) and (gasp!) we shop at goodwill for some of our clothes. My kids know that people work for a living. Also, they don't talk back, they do what they're told, get good grades in school and they know that the value of a person is not measured in dollars. It was good enough for my mom and dad, it's good enough for me.
Oh, and we're atheists. - Kingfisherx, on 07/02/2009, -11/+28Emo isn't the problem. Emo is the reverse of being a chauvinistic prick. The problem is that no one is teaching them how to express themselves the right way or how to look out for there fellow man. Parents aren't fulfilling their duties.
- AbsurdParadox, on 07/02/2009, -10/+26No, Lonely, its the STUPIDITY of people like twomeyw that is the problem. I swear to God half of all people in this nation are below a 5th graders level of thinking. People make wild assumptions based on little information. For example, what just happened here is equivalent if I one said "I don't like Red" and someone else goes "WTF?! Blue sucks!"
- Zomgondo, on 07/02/2009, -0/+16Oh, the irony.
- jdmulloy, on 07/02/2009, -5/+21It's always someone else's fault. Society is causing the children to not grow up to be responsible, productive adults. Today's kids are for the most part egotistical wimps, because the parents shield them from the harsh realities of the world and never make them take responsibility for their actions. Our "prosperity" over the last 50 years has caused everyone to become too comfortable, everyone feels they are entitled to everything. We can't keep the charade up for too much longer.
- Sushiman, on 07/02/2009, -0/+15I think this is a huge issue. There's so much attention towards the messages that the media sends to women, but not much about the messages sent to men. This is because the messages sent to women are visibly hurting women, while the messages sent to men are not so obviously hurting men. But they are, just in different ways. And they also hurt women!
Mostly men get killed in homicide. Mostly men end up in jail. Maybe they don't develop eating disorders or get beaten by their wives, but going to jail and getting beaten by their cellmates is pretty bad, too!
If you want to stop rape, you can't just look at the rape victims. You have to look at the perpetrators, too. - twiztidsinz, on 07/02/2009, -3/+18Maybe if they weren't 'non-conformist just like everyone else' and didn't try to wear their sisters jeans and makeup and didn't act like girls then they wouldn't be made fun of.
If you want to be unique, be unique. Don't copy trends, don't try to fit in.
Emo's remind me of the kids who always tried to fit in with a group, and when they wouldn't fit in.. they'd move on to the next group and try again. It's like all those people got together and said "How can we copy everyone at once?" then decided to dress goth-like, wear makeup like Glam rockers and write poetry like the beatnik (or whatever you want to call those who hang out in coffee shops) while wearing girls jeans. - SirBruce, on 07/02/2009, -1/+16The answer: because the dumb males are less likely to take the SAT. There are more traditional trade skill jobs available to non-college males than there are for females; female mechanics, machine laborers, construction workers, etc. are more rare. The dumb females score lower but are still encouraged to go to college, and college admissions will probably lower their standards for a female applicant for the sake of diversity.
- anthropodeus, on 07/02/2009, -0/+14i had serious depression two years ago. i was on the verge of attempting suicide, but i couldn't talk to anybody about it and i didnt feel comfortable going to a psychologist. i have been very self-reliant since a young age, and i felt like i was on my own to get through the depression. well, i guess i felt like i was on my own in terms of everything, which is why i was suicidal.
- jdmulloy, on 07/02/2009, -1/+15Id say being a nerd is more cool now than it used to be. Now people look at people like Bill Gates and realize that nerds can make a lot of money.

why are those our only choices? - zanzzz, on 07/02/2009, -1/+14I'll share an observation that I admit is tangential to this discussion but I think sheds light on how society has changed over a few short decades. Years ago commercials featured men as knowing, in control, strong, and often paternalistic to a fault. "My wife- I think I'll keep her" even in jest could never be uttered today in ad. Women in the past could be portrayed as the lesser, the daffier, the "butt" of the joke. Today's politically correct environment has unwritten but totally enforced rules. In any advertisement featuring a man and a woman ONLY the man can be shown to be less competent, less sane, less in control, and ONLY the man can be the butt of any joke. If an ad features people of different races then only the white (and preferably a white male) can be portrayed as less intelligent, learned, wise, sane, in control, and ONLY the white can be the butt of the joke. I defy anyone to cite any examples on mainstream TV advertisements that violate these rules. The subtle affect on children watching a near endless supply of these examples may be sending a message to boys that they are less valued; as women in the past could make the case for. We live in a society petrified of being accused of indulging in sexism or racism yet by being so preoccupied in avoiding this it ironically translates into subtle reverse discrimination.
- LonelyTylenoL, on 07/02/2009, -10/+22Obviously that's not what I said. You said that twomey23334.
- sinurgy, on 07/02/2009, -1/+13This is typical in America period, whenever we seem too one sided we immediately swing all the way to the other side. Woman were being overlooked, they were not treated equally, so naturally we through everything their way and chucked boys under the bus. Another example, look at recent elections, right wing is out, left wing is in and it'll stay that way until the left ***** everything up in their own special way and then it'll swing back to the right again till they do the same. For some reason as a society we just haven't learned that whole moderation is key thing.
btw...excellent post MaTT2011 - Cainxinth, on 07/02/2009, -0/+12What's Johnny doing out on a Tuesday night
Johnny can't read, Johnny can't write
Kids just don't understand
Johnny don't care about the world
As long as he can do his girl
And prove that he's a man.. - Zenth, on 07/02/2009, -2/+13*sigh* A "national commission on boys" and a "national commission on girls" is retarded. It'll create a funding dilemma- who gets more, and why? If there's going to be a national commission it should be on children and young adults.
- anthropodeus, on 07/02/2009, -0/+11I'll never touch silly putty again.
- Gareth321, on 07/02/2009, -4/+14"this is still a man's world"
You really need to qualify that. Based on what? Salaries? Men make up the majority of top 10% of the salary bracket. But we also make up the BOTTOM 10%. I'm sick of collectivism. It's a man's world? It's 'my' world? How? Show me where my collective priviledges are, I haven't found them yet.
Want to know my opinion? I'm living in a woman's world. I'm 10 times more likely to get convicted of a similar crime than women. If convicted, I'm twice as likely to get harsher penalties than a woman who was convicted of the same crime. I have a good chance of being registered as a sex offender if I touch a woman in a way she doesn't like - or if I piss her off and she files a false rape claim [>40% of all claims]. I have zero educational support, zero support groups, zero "male entitlement" or quotas funds set up for me for college. If I divorce my wife later in life [because she's been emotionally or physically abusing me for years and no one takes my claims seriously], I lose everything including the children. Women are many times more likely to employ another woman, so I can forget about jobs where the person deciding whether to hire me is a woman. And all of that's fine, because society demonises me as a sexual predator - JUST BECAUSE I HAVE A PENIS.
No. I live in a woman's world. It's just that people like you don't know it yet. - dandaman0345, on 07/02/2009, -0/+10I know what you mean, and the only emotion that is socially acceptable is anger and then people wonder why the murder rate is so high among men
- deathandtaverns, on 07/02/2009, -1/+11You can't ignore society's role in how our children turn out though. "It's society's fault" isn't an excuse for bad parenting, but if you think that you alone as a parent can keep your child from being depressed/ suicidal/ a general ***** you're being naive. I've seen great parents have utter failures as children and alcoholics have fantastic kids. You can't ignore that we as a society put expectations on our children as well as program them with wants and tastes that feed on a human's need to be accepted into our society and we as a society need to do what we can to help all of our children be the best adults possible. You're right we need to let them grow up a little at a time and address the sense of entitlement they have, but if you think you can teach this to your kids then have them go to school with their materialistic friends or watch tv shows that are designed to tell them what goods and/or services they deserve right now I think you're going to fail.
It takes a village to raise a child, and with mass media and federal government mandates, the village just got a whole lot bigger. We are not only products of our parents but our society as well. - DrHoliday, on 07/02/2009, -0/+9wooosh.
- deathandtaverns, on 07/02/2009, -1/+10I could guess... Since dropout rates are much higher for males and far fewer of them go to college because they think they can make it without the stupidest males do not take the SAT's whereas females are taught that in order to be worth anything they have to go to college.
No citation, just a guess - holychicken, on 07/02/2009, -6/+15Are you trying to convince us that this is somehow a more happy existence because you sound pretty pissed off.

- Barackalypse, on 07/02/2009, -4/+12Have we abdicated the raising of our children to "policy makers"?

- inactive, on 07/02/2009, -0/+8Bah! With the amount of people trying to troll each other here, crazy opinions, and just overall pompous expressions, I get my /s radar mixed up.
My bad. :( - cmcagle, on 07/02/2009, -1/+9Really you guys? Rogor makes an intelligent, dare-I-say true point about one of the problems in contemporary American society, and rather than engage his argument, you make ad hominem attacks against him for being from China?
- Contrarius, on 07/02/2009, -0/+8Rub some dirt on it.
- SirBruce, on 07/02/2009, -4/+12I don't think kids who "don't talk back" and "do what they're told" are solid humanistic values. Mind you, it's preferable to having them running wild and out of control. But you shouldn't treat them as slaves, or even always as kids; you have to engage them intellectual as equals and help them mature into functioning adults. Otherwise you reinforce a very authoritarian, caste-like paradigm.
