- Lederhosed, on 07/15/2009, -1/+12Glad somebody is doing it, now that the government and major corporations aren't.
- avataros, on 07/15/2009, -0/+9I wonder why geek b/millionaires aren't doing more of this kind of pure scientific philanthropy.
And I've met Laz a few times back in my university days before RIM made it big. Nice geeky type. Nice to know that he hasn't lost that side to him, even with a few bil in his account. - freeridstylee, on 07/16/2009, -0/+7Somebody, pls register, then cut and paste. ty.
- DarkCloud515, on 07/16/2009, -0/+6Thanks a bunch, even "bug me not" bugs me.
- Astark, on 07/16/2009, -1/+5What's philanthropy? It's either cheating on your wife or stamp collecting, I can never remember.
- sndream, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3I will most definitely get a Blackberry for my next cellphone.
With the govt blew all OUR money on military plus bailing out loser banks and loser home owners, I am glad someone picking up the slack. - GlenAWalker, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3***** registering, buried
- inactive, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3Lol registration. Buried.

- homercles337, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2Where are Eli and Edith Broad?
- lukeatron, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2Riiiight, all that government getting in the way is what's holding back science research. If I just didn't have to pay so much in taxes I would be curing cancer from the billion dollar research lab in my basement. In my spare time.
Edison toiling around in his workshop is just so relevant after 100 years of advancement. Thanks for bringing that up.
/s (<--- for those too dense to figure this out on their own)
Modern science is ***** off expensive and while a couple billionaires throwing money around might be able to put an appreciable dent in some specific problems, if the rest of science is forced to seek out private funding two things will happen. 1) They won't get funding. 2) Corporate interests will exert pressure to return results favorable to their bottom line.
Science and Republicans is like oil and water. That means they don't mix well for you Republicans out there. - bpwned, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2AE <-> BE

- footbag01, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1This is a great thing. Scientific contributions are often overlooked as charity, but are very important.
- gerrylazlo, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1Tell that to my comment box.

- scamper22, on 07/16/2009, -0/+0For those who wonder how science would be funded if it were not for government...
Have a look at reality.
Bill Gates is massively funding various charities and research programs.
Lazardis is doing his thing.
Back in the day, Edison worked and then invented during his spare time. Imagine how many Edisons we could have if the government got out of the way and let us have a low cost of living (low property tax...).
Even those evil Wall-Street types contributed to science.
JP. Morgan bankrolled Tesla.
That's not even getting into the R&D that business does for its own profit. - GlenAWalker, on 07/16/2009, -1/+1i admire these men, thanks for the link cruelpupet!
- frequentFlyer, on 07/16/2009, -1/+1Already registered?
- Wxndel, on 07/16/2009, -0/+0Big deal. probably used "hired to invent" policies to stick it to their own research people and get rich..
