- superior1, on 08/11/2008, -6/+61are they HIV positive?
- srujanlive, on 08/10/2008, -5/+59Let's hope this works. It will also keep the vaccine costs low without unnecessary meddling by big pharmaceutical companies.
- argoff, on 08/11/2008, -3/+47I think it's very important to point out that in 1970 India made the decision not to allow drug patents, only their manufacturing process. While that decision was changed to normal patents in 2005 (because of WTO pressure), the 35 year period of no pharmaceutical patents during which there was rapid R&D and rapid industry growth takes the notion that the pharmaceutical industry needs patents to pay for innovation is simply a lie. Like slavery, patents are a false property and have evil consequences. EG pharmaceuticals sued African nations in the world court to not use generic AIDS drugs affecting 15 million people dying of AIDS.
The rapid growth of industry and innovation without patent shouldn't be a surprise though. Same happened in Germany, Italy, and even the USA - who didn't respect European patents for the longest time. - restlessdesign, on 08/11/2008, -7/+38We're not just sure—we're HIV-positive.
- ChinezePanda, on 08/11/2008, -3/+26What the hell is wrong with you?
What catholic priest fed you that load of *****? - LemonChicken, on 08/11/2008, -0/+22Have you ever met or even seen someone with AIDs? It can be one hell of a ***** disease. It only takes one mistake to get it, people aren't perfect. And it isn't limited to homosexuals either. Remember in the 80s a bunch of people got it through blood transfusions.
- halexmar6, on 08/11/2008, -0/+20maybe now some tribes in africa will stop believing the practice of doing a virgin girl is the cure for hiv/aids...
tru story http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/a/aids-virgin ... - TheSabre, on 08/11/2008, -1/+21Thanks. I wasn't sure how this whole "reading" thing worked.
- adml_shake, on 08/11/2008, -2/+21Lets all pray for no "I am Legend" situations.
- maheshee11, on 08/10/2008, -4/+22The trial was conducted at the Tuberculosis Research Centre (TRC), Chennai.
- srujanlive, on 08/10/2008, -0/+17Well in India generics are commonplace, driving the cost down. And since ICMR is a government funded research institute, the government is definitely going to subsidize its costs.
- inactive, on 08/11/2008, -2/+19this is only the 7th AIDS cure this week! keep them coming!
- Apocalyptic0n3, on 08/11/2008, -0/+16Excuse the language but you are a ***** *****.
- Taedirk, on 08/11/2008, -0/+15No, that's just an (un?)fortunate side-effect.
- Culero, on 08/11/2008, -0/+15no, i think we'll just have to sacrifice people.
- Zempz, on 08/11/2008, -0/+15not to mention ***** kids who were born with it...
- rentmitchum, on 08/11/2008, -1/+15This is the best cure for aids I've seen on digg this week.
- gojcaj, on 08/11/2008, -0/+13Africa kinda sorta needs this.
- Wangeye, on 08/11/2008, -0/+12morality isn't universal
- Murdats, on 08/11/2008, -2/+14http://digg.com/health/12_year_old_with_HIV_to_ope ...
right, this 12 year old girl doesnt deserve to live.
doctors who get stuck by patients with it, they deserve to die
children who step on infected needles, nope no cure for them.
someone who sleeps with their loved one who hasnt yet presented symptoms, how dare they love someone, slow death for them.
and why should taking drugs or having sex mean you deserve to die a slow, painful death? this is exactly the type of hate filled ignorant comment preached by someone who infact does not respect or appreciate life. - SirNuke, on 08/11/2008, -1/+10One Potential Method:
1. Give vaccine to subject without HIV.
2. Take blood sample from subject
3. Attempt to infect blood sample with HIV. - fafnir314, on 08/11/2008, -2/+11No, dude. I tried it and it totally works.
- tells, on 08/11/2008, -0/+9You're right that HIV does mutate faster than *****, but there are constant similarities in the structure of their reverse transcriptase and other essential proteins. The only thing thing is that this article does not warrant any excitement as this is only a Phase I trial. Any other drug completing a Phase I trial would not be considered a "major success". It should prove its efficacy in the phase II and III trials, but there are no indicators that this vaccine will be at all effective. In other words, it may be safe, but it may not work at all. This article should be dugg down for the terrible title.
- digjam, on 08/11/2008, -2/+10whats up with all the morons complaining about " why does articles about cure for cancer and hiv keep hitting the front page of digg every other day?"
So what the ***** is wrong with that? Somebody is working hard to keep you out of the ***** danger? - Z_Man, on 08/11/2008, -1/+9How do we test this sort of thing? I mean, I'm not a scientist or doctor but it seems you would have to risk someone getting infected for this sort of thing to be tested...
- Lilitou, on 08/11/2008, -0/+7Yeah, all those kids who get it because their mothers were HIV+ are at fault. Also, women who were raped because of a highly prevalent belief that having sex with a virgin will cure AIDS. Also, the people who take precautions, but the partner's test showed a false negative (or was tested too soon after inital infection and the test couldn't detect it) and the condom broke. Also, the people who got it from blood transfusions (yes, it still happens).
No one deserves this disease. Not even the people who share needles when they shoot up. Not even people who have unprotected sex with prostitutes. Not even you. - digjam, on 08/11/2008, -2/+8why whats wrong with that *****?
- aserer511, on 08/11/2008, -1/+7very cool! I am interning at a company applying much the same theory with cancer, and also seeing pretty good success.
- arjie, on 08/11/2008, -1/+7Ha ha, yes, we're currently working on another project with the same people. However, the Times of India is well-known for sensationalism. Stay calm and don't rejoice yet, though, AIDSVAX got to Phase III and then failed.
- Babazoz, on 08/11/2008, -0/+6Don't sweat it. It's diggers trying to look cool, as usual.
And failing miserably. As usual. - digjam, on 08/11/2008, -0/+6AIDS can be infected by using unsterilized syringes tooo...so please shut the ***** up.
- psylemon, on 08/11/2008, -5/+11oh, they're sure. they're HIV positive.
- 4d669, on 08/11/2008, -0/+6In the US every single pharmaceutical drug has higher cost than any other place on earth, they charge whatever they want and say it's FDA security and inspections costs.
- helloyamadotcom, on 08/11/2008, -2/+8you guys are HIV-lame
- kkapoor, on 08/11/2008, -0/+5Dude the only "populations" that I'm concerned about are ones that voice opinions such as yours.
- benitojuarez, on 08/11/2008, -0/+5for real, one time i needed some levaquin but its like 13 bucks a pill here, i ordered it online for 3 bucks a pill. ***** came from india, Im glad they have the system they have goin on over there.
- inactive, on 08/11/2008, -0/+5I think he's making the point that Tuberculosis has evolved and become incurable, so this center may not be as reliable.
- DrZmobie, on 08/11/2008, -4/+9I'm making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS
- locojones, on 08/11/2008, -1/+5There are no results. Phase I trials are limited in scope and only serve to confirm the safety of the vaccine in the test sample. Nobody died or had severe side effects from the injections, so they can now plan to move to Phase II trials.
- CrimsonFlash, on 08/11/2008, -0/+4No no no. You didn't read it properly.
It was talking about two vaccines. We will call them A and B.
A was tested in Germany and Belgium. It failed. B, so far, has passed. This article is about Vaccine B. It was just saying how Vaccine B passed in testing so soon after Vaccine A had failed. - RuSTeDs, on 08/11/2008, -2/+61. Give vaccine to subject without HIV.
2. Take blood sample from subject
3. Attempt to infect blood sample with HIV.
3. ???
4. Profit. - arjie, on 08/11/2008, -0/+4Certain groups are at much higher risk of contracting HIV than others. You give one group this vaccine, and keep another group as control (from the same section of the population). Then after a few years you see if the incidence of HIV/AIDS in the control group is lower than the test group. You then determine if the difference is of statistical significance (there is a chance that the risk is the same for both groups and the difference is purely accidental, with some statistical tools you can measure if the difference is very likely to be due to an actual effect by the vaccine). Naturally these things take time.
- 4d669, on 08/11/2008, -2/+6I don't want to be the pessimistic guy in here, but the truth is that this vaccine only boosts the immune system, even having a healthy diet does this and it does not stop HIV. Besides, even if they DID develop a vaccine for HIV it would only make things worse. This bitch mutates faster than the speed of light. What would happen is that the virus would become resistant to it, just like what happened with Malaria. I don't mean to be fatalistic, but the truth is that there is no bright side for HIV. Eventually it will mutate and spread like a cold. It's all ***** up. Apparently some people are genetically resistant to it, so get busy winning the lottery with your DNA or some *****.
- fluffyturtle, on 08/11/2008, -0/+4So if you RTFA it states the purpose of this test was two fold, first they wanted to make sure the test subjects didn't mutate into horrible creatures killing everyone in the facility. Second they wanted to make sure it stimulated the immune system (by which I assume they simply looked at the amount of white blood cells?).
- inactive, on 08/11/2008, -0/+4Walgreens.

- fredrockbluff, on 08/11/2008, -2/+6the test subjects have major balls
- rockus, on 08/11/2008, -0/+3Atleast our news sources are more credible than Fox News.
- jsp123, on 08/11/2008, -0/+3It was monkey kidneys, and it looks like that wasn't the cause.
Source: http://www.avert.org/origins.htm - Dgen_X, on 08/11/2008, -0/+3"It will also keep the vaccine costs low without unnecessary meddling by big pharmaceutical companies."
That just means that it won't be approved by the FDA -
