- rotten03, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They will never come up with a cure. The drug companies want a treatment not a cure. There's a lot more money to be made treating people all of their lives.
- Deputy_Doodah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1.......Good for them though. Glad to see less people suffering.
- charlescheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Of COURSE! It's the American government again. Believe it or not bub, we have a silly little thing called LAWS. The government can't just take technology from a company and give it to everyone for free after that company just spent BILLIONS and BILLIONS of dollars developing a drug. What drug company will be left to develop AIDS drugs when the government starts stealing from the people that way.
Problem 2, giving these people who are spreading AIDS like it's a sport longer lives is only going to make the problem WORSE! The reason AIDS is spreading in Africa like wildfire is because many Africans REFUSE to wear condoms. So making them appear healthier and live much longer is going to exacerbate the problem. There needs to be a cure, but prolonging lives in parts of the world where people have no regard for the virus, even when they have it, is NOT going to make things even a LITTLE better. - Namtaru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the title is not misleading... note it says 'treatment' not 'cure'
- Necromancyr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Treatment has been working for years now - drug cocktails and all that. The real issue is that it's not completely clearing it from an infected persons system. Only major thing this story relates is that it's happening in Botswana...
- ymustub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can appreciate the 'positive' comments and interest for the most part by many of you. Unfortunately far too many of your comments are uninformed drivel at best. How about stick to commenting on what you REALLY understand and have knowledge about. So until you become devastated by the disease yourself, just keep sitting in the bleachers watching...no comments please! Nice touch by 'malaria boy' ...a cure for malaria so 'you' can travel...to Botswana maybe?! Guys like you really exist????
- dilbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In Western countries, treatment with anti-retro-viral cocktails are already working very well. It is nice to read that an African country takes action to treat AIDS and not just ignoring it.
Aside from medicine/therapy, wouldn't sex- and health education be a factor to take into account as well? There are still people in Africa that having (unprotected) sex with a baby can cure AIDS. - shuffle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Of course they are making headway in a treatment vs. a cure. There is no money in the cure!
- stuffedstich, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i am excited about this. You know it's not always the person's fault they have aids. So don't be so blinded to the fact because "oh wow, they found a way to slow aids down. wait i dont care because i dont have it."
- gotpaint547, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0goood cant wait till a cure is relased that way there less of a need to be safe and watch who ur dating
- wizgha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"African countries say they have no money, but if a war is brewing, in the blink of an eye, that money would be there," Tlou said.
At least, someone is admitting it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Even if they cure aids in Africa, there's still like a million other things that cut their life expectancy down to 40 years. I don't think most American's are willing to make the financial sacrifice necessary to pull Africa out of its turmoil, not that I believe that any amount of money will do it anyways.
- hydrokayak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, they can slow aids down, which is a start to a cure... not an actual cure. It's affecting a lot of people though. Botswana is a highly aids-infected area...
- boysranch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well right now..the linked page is not working. Where else can i get this story from?? There's a lot of awareness raising required to bring down the number of aids patients. If people are unaware and uneducated, its hard to control this deadly virus.
http://www.silveradoboysranch.com/ - motionblur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice lame pseudo-misleading headline.
- shamanking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cool
- tishmatic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Treatment in Botswana is being backed up with prevention/awareness campaigns - through the web: http://aids.edumela.com. A great example for other countries facing similar situations.
- sdpalmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey --- anti-retroviral medicines have been around for a while. The headline for this story on digg and at Yahoo! makes it sound like there's a new type of treatment for treating AIDS. It's new to Botswana, and it's not really a step towards a cure, it's a management regimine. And believe me, it's management of the disease manages your life too. I'm glad to see that the treatments are free in Botswana, especially given that Africa is ravaged by this disease, but for those of us here who are living with HIV and/or AIDS, treatment is extremely costly both in dollars and in other ways. Story not dugg.
- Digisurfer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If it said "Cure for AIDS is working!" then I would understand why people would say that the title is misleading. But it doesn't say "cure" does it. Oh well, I guess some folks out there just automatically equate one with the other for some strange reason. Blame the educational system I say. +Digg as a treatment is better than nothing even if it's nota cure, and it's a good article. Can always use more hope in the world too.
- jimkski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There's nothing new in this article related to AIDS treatment. The Botswana project is more about getting 3rd world people access to the expensive antiretroviral drugs that are available in the developed world. Aside from the obviously significant societal benefits of bringing back a generation of Africans from certain swift death there is nothing in this article to hold out hope for new treatments or a cure. These folks in Botswana on the regimen still have drug toxicity to contend with and truth be known, most people on antiretroviral drugs don't last more than 13 years beyond becoming symptomatic.
- cpradip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its still bad to see that people suffering from HIV +ve are not allowed into corporates.
- seventoes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Kinda cool.
- c.trinity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The free treatment is probably the best step they could have made.
Many of this people are so poor that they can't even afford to die.
And now the free treatment helps them feel better and stay alive for a little longer, even though won't cure them.
I am happy for this people. - johnkimble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think it's worth a digg, specifically because it's a step towards a cure, and anything that is a step towards a solution of a healh related issue is a big deal, and should be a big deal, to us all.
- ihybridora, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that is good. this may/will bring the death toll down
- MrRehab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The use of highly active antiretroviral therapy prolongs both the median time of progression to AIDS and the median survival time. My favorite center of treatment: http://www.cirquelodge.com
- Dementual, on 01/27/2008, -0/+0Congratulations :)
I hope they find a cure soon, then a lot of the world will be a much better place :) - cannuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If two people are tested for so-called HIV (which supposedly the only cause of "AIDS") - one person in Africa and one person in Australia - and both people get the exact same result - the person from Africa will "have" HIV (and naturally will get AIDS - they say) while at the same time the person in Australia (with the exact same results as the person from Africa) will NOT have "HIV" found in his her body - therefore won't get 'AIDS".
- cannuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@bash "its a freaking positive or negative"
Unfortunately that's not the case when its comes to HIV=AIDS. If you had done some research you would have found out:
a) That there are two so-called HIV tests.
b) That if the first test shows HIV (so-called), then a second different test is done.
c) The second test displays a series of colored bands.
d) In Africa - if the second test shows just two colored bands - you are HIV positive.
e) In Australia - the second test must show three bands for a HIV positive result. Two color bands mean HIV negative.
Q.E.D.
You need to know that the HIV/AIDS/Medical/Chemical Industrial Complex is a 100 billion dollar industry. If you have been following any of the court cases involving Enron, Merrill Lynch and hundreds of other corporations - who now have their CEOs in jail - you'll understand that Greed had no boundaries - and that a lot of people will do anything, say anything - just for money and sometimes for power to control others - and sometimes for both power and money.
Do a little research and prove me wrong - that is with respect to the 3 band - 2 band issue. - cannuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@tubejay
You are an illerate - need I say more. Or does lemming fit as well? - coldbyte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This has before but that is a treatment designed to suppress the effect of aids on people. There will be no cure until the world chooses to work together to find one. Think about the pharmaceutical company's that sell this treatment. I mean isn't it in there best choice to make as much money as possible so sell treatments at high price and make millions or discover a cure and save millions without making much money cause people would force a price drop.
- spiderland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Is this all Digg is now? Misleading headlines in which the comments tell you the real story?"
Yeah, I agree with that. There have been WAY too many misleading headlines lately, in hopes of making it to the front page. - danmanx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is this all Digg is now? Misleading headlines in which the comments tell you the real story?
No Digg. - charlescheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*taught
- gs191, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0seems like the comment thread has been spammed...
Anyway, this is a good step forward for finding a cure and they need to make this more widespread through out the hardest hit locations all over the world. Unfortunately there is still no cure but at least there is hope. - jimkski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To Braydon: Your comment is way off base. Magic Johnson is *one* person and a very rare one at that- he's no proof of a conspiracy to cover up a cure known only to rich Americans. If you look at the studies of AIDS therapies you'll see that almost no one in the USA, rich or poor, lives past 13 years once they become symptomatic. There is no cure for AIDS here or anywhere else. As someone said, there are only maintenance drugs.
- firehydra2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow this is a first...........
- tionanny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"African countries say they have no money, but if a war is brewing, in the blink of an eye, that money would be there," Tlou said. "So you need that commitment. Instead of spending money on Cadillacs, put money where the people are."
IMHO this is the thought process that could cure alot more than AIDS.. - cannuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Folks
Notice at the top whose is paying for this page.Hmm I wonder why the story is here. Does Slash do the same? Money money money......... - bash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cannuck: its a freaking positive or negative, i'm damn sure thats universal language for "you have HIV" or "you don't have HIV".
- RatherDashing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Earlier this year, she was crowned Miss HIV Stigma Free in a beauty pageant that aims to change attitudes about the disease.
- spiderland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"AIDS with no treatment = people die rather quickly, hopefully not infecting many others or theyre offspring
versus
AIDS with life prolonging treatment = people infecting many others before they die"
I understand with your point, and I tend to agree with it. Personally, I'd like to see more $$$ spent on education and awareness to take a more PROACTIVE rather than a REACTIVE approach. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Another interesting little side note, isn't it funny how the Rockefellers (among others) are both heavily into depopulation projects as well as "AIDS" issues?
- charlescheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cannuck...uh...uh....WHAT? Go back to school a little longer please. I see they talk you to read and write, but they failed to teach you anything beyond that.
- cannuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@star
Don't know what you mean about Rockefeller and depopulation - but if Rockefeller moved a million people from Africa who have tested positive for HIV (so-called) to Australia - they then will instantly be HIV Negative and no longer have to worry about getting AIDS. As well the Africans in Australia will:
a) have food to eat,
b) no one will be dropping cluster bombs on them,
c) their homes will not be burned down,
d) 12 year old boys will not be kidnapped and forced to shoot their 12 year old friends who refuse to shoot women and babies.
e) and 8 year old girls won't be kidnapped and sold as slaves for the USA maid and hooker market.
f) and they won't be used as guineau pigs for pharmaceutical testing Polio vaccine.
Geez I wonder if all of the above stresses Africans out in Africa and impacts their immune system (AIDS) so that they die from any disease all diseases? I wonder how many black USA citizens (whose great grandparents were kidnapped from Africa) get sick and die in the deep south of the USA from Genocidal induced AIDS (see list above)? - ajaykilkenny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0its about f****'n time!!!!!!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cannuck: "Don't know what you mean about Rockefeller and depopulation"
The Rockefellers are the driving force behind the depopulation of what they call "useless eaters".
Since they believe that the world's resources will not suffice for all the people living now and even more so in 10 years, they sponsor corporations and projects aiming at, to put it bluntly, killing people off. And the HIV/AIDS hoax is one of the best(sic) working scams ever.
You tell people that you want to get rid off that they have "HIV".
Then you tell them that in order to survive you "must" take this extremely poisonous and expensive "medicine".
Piece of cake. You get rich making people killing themselves or by letting people be force fed with the "cure" which is the actual killer.
It worked on the gays and it is working on the negros. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dang, sorry for the bad grammar =
- ionix18, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"Treatment for AIDS is working!" --> "but still are not able to stow it totally"
Misleading title, no digg. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I hope they find a cure for malaria too so I can travel around without vaccination.
