- LTrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Ok guys, the article says we have 5 years until this might be possible to test. That means we need to get Al Gore back in the VP chair so he can protect the space-time continuum.

screw mars guys... think of all the aliens we can provoke to invade us with this baby! - kdehead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4the scientific paper quoted in the article is here (google scholar, HTML version):

http://www.livejournal.com/users/groovychk/85968.html - caldroun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If we just now thought about it...you know that there is an alien somewhere that already came up with it and has a patent just waiting to sue.
- ThankTheCheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4not as impossible as it may sound. I've seen a number of documentaties that have talked about this theory. Yet to be proven practical (or even possible) of course, but the evidence and research so far is looking positive. Don't be so quick to dismiss - after all, if you had said we'd land on the moon to someone 100 years ago you'd get the same reaction.
- Fraghappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This seems just a little bit too good to be true. Digging to help boost interest in investigating the plausibility the topic, not because I believe it.
- carlosglz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I read through everything. The other links in the comments are very good and worth reading.
As far as my beliefs go, the universe was designed with a long series of tests that each civilization must pass and solve to move forward. Just think about that for a second... everything that is around us gives us clues about the way it works. It could have been a different way, but it isn't... intelligence, rational thought, and insatiable curiosity are enough to "decode" the universe around us.
So then, why is it so hard to get to another planet? Another solar system? Another galaxy? Because it's another test. I refuse to believe there isn't a solution. Could this be it? At least someone is trying.
Here's to hope... - cryptocom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ok...I'm going out on a limb here, but I honestly think that the U.S. Air Force has this technology already. How long ago was the Z Machine at Sandia created? Think about all the other high-energy machines that the USAF and National Defense Laboratories have created that seem to have been created at huge cost, used for experiments a few years, and then turned off and abandoned. Sure, alot of them were used for nuclear research, especially when live testing was abandoned...but don't you think they would have explored any 'side effects' observed? I honestly think that this was developed quite a while ago, and has been in use for at least 20, 30, 40 years. I also think this could be a possible explanation for alot of UFO sightings. Think about it....a Mexican military surveillance plane is flying along, and a silverish craft is both seen on radar AND visually by the crew, and then it disappears. All of it documented. Think what an awesome recon craft this would be...one that appears over the target, gathers information, and then zips off and disappears, appearing back over friendly territory. Yeah yeah yeah...I know...conspiracy theorist/ufo nut/blah blah blah...I'm not saying that's what it IS...I'm just saying that the descriptions of alot of UFO encounters seem to match the description of how this hyperdimensional magnetic coil/ring engine would work.
- bryantee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Intense magnetics that "tear into another dimension"? I missed that chapter in physics apparently."
No, they generally don't teach multiverse theory in high school, mostly because the science behind it is still being worked out and it has no applicable purposes as of yet. But you're right, it does seem vague. However that fact that he has been contacted by both the Air Force and NASA does seem more promising. - swight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.newscientist.com/channel/fundamentals/mg18925331.200

www.NewVoyageNews.com - jobeats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm in.
- kdehead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1scotsman.com is pretty reliable. its a broadsheet newspaper in scotland, as reliable as say The Times of London, or The Guardian. its certainly not a crazy crackpot site like prisonplanet or rense.
- tbalanco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It does seem a bit out of this world, but the possibility is really intriguing.
- Lobster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can see an image of how this works at the base of this page
http://www.zen45800.zen.co.uk/tmxx/dido.html
Due to the nature of this drive it is likely that 3 hours is rather conservative and people will eventually arrive 3 hours before having left. This may seem strange but then most innovation is. - nacho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can I bring my Sony CD to another planet? I don't think that is in the user "agreement".
- SteveDeGroof, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sure, the flight's only 3 hours but, if you add in the time getting to and from the spaceport, going through customs, immigration and security checks, you're looking at an all-day trip.
- nubtard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hello multiverse.
- theatgrex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Please universe, let this be true .
I need to get off this rock ! - Fantt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1All the worlds are yours, except Europa. Attempt no landings there.
- argblat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't know...this sounds kind of fishy to me
From the article:
"The theoretical engine consists of a zinc lozenge, a nickel, and a wish...." - oakeybloke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I call dibs on T'Pol if the Vulcans arrive in appx five years.
- vicd28, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone remember the tv show Sliders?
- orangetiki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does it turn into sofas and balls of yarn when it gets there?
- fishx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Also, if a large enough magnetic field was created, the craft would slip into a different dimension, where the speed of light is faster..."
How do they know that??
Still +dugg - vondur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Phasers damnit! I want phasers! And Photon Torpedos! And we will need to make our spaceships look like Klingon battlecruisers!
- conundrum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Reminds me of the Philadelphia experiment.
- cadam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It does sound crazy, but look at how long it took to go from a Crazy Idea, to a Theory, to BOOM with Atomic Weapons.

I'll bring the Kegger
"Hasen't anyone seen Event Horizon? No digg."
Hopefully ours will have that spiky corridor too!
"Please all the conspiracy nuts know that the Prometheus has been doing this for years now, and the dedalus can go to other galaxies in just 18 days!"
I think the Daedalus got a flat... It's not here yet and you know how spotty the GSM coverage is in between here and the Andromeda Galaxy.
"Just make sure we don't make a test run until 4 April 2063,"
I'll be... like... over 60 then! NO WAY!
"Phasers damnit! I want phasers! And Photon Torpedos! And we will need to make our spaceships look like Klingon battlecruisers!"
I want a Hand Twinkler, my CPP Potkustart and Kalinkaa.
"Yay, more Roswell technology ;p"
That was my though too.
"Sure, the flight's only 3 hours but, if you add in the time getting to and from the spaceport, going through customs, immigration and security checks, you're looking at an all-day trip."
Yeah... and extra "screening" isn't fun... ^glove snap^ *shudders*
"All the worlds are yours, except Europa. Attempt no landings there."
Yup. My Missile Defense grid is AWOL at the moment... not safe. Not safe at all.
"Great, now Bush will have other planets to invade. An intergalactic war on terror. Wonder if he'll add the Borg to his list of axis of evil :)"
We could Assimilate them for a change... cyborg servants, anyone?
"Hyperspace and the best it can do is earth to mars in 3 hours? That is crap! That is only roughly 2% the speed of light, which really isn't special."
Try to swim to mars... c'mon... I dare ya.
OK... I'm done.
three w00ts for the dude Who makes the first hyperdrive flight! - mohrr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just make sure we don't make a test run until 4 April 2063,
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Because we can just ship all the sick people to other planets...
- codeyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A total crap... The space-time fabric cant be torn (a viable explanation of the effect). This was considered decades ago and was proved impossible empirically. And if this is indeed possible then we can travel from our office and home in no time. A bit of hacking can also make it a time machine.
Now being the speed of light being faster in another dimension, may be true... but in such a dimension the gravitational force might be greater than the EM force and the human body could simply disintegrate. - Esso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'll stick with my Improbability Drive thank you.
- mustainerocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Sorry, but there are no other "dimensions" to travel into. There is this space, and you can travel there. The whole concept of dimensions is made up. We don't live in the "3rd" dimension, like there is a 4th or 5th. "
How in the fu** do you know? Please, enlighten us. - ConBaNo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think it's fake. First of all, if we had the technology to travel near the speed of light in our dimension we probably wouldn't survive. So what's the difference if "light travels faster" in this made up dimension? Plus, I thought the theory was that there were more dimensions than just one extra, so how do they know that all these benefits are waiting for them if they were to randomly tear an opening and just slide on in to any dimension is waiting for them? I would think if this were even possible, your only benefit was the spectacle of turning inside out.
The article is vague, and there is no credit for the author, or the 'scientist' supplying the information. The link to the woman's blog isn't making me feel any better either. - flyincomfort, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no there's 7 dimensions, no more no less. and the 7th dimension is GOD!
- DJNewStyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The theoretical engine works by creating an intense magnetic field that, according to ideas first developed by the late scientist Burkhard Heim in the 1950s, would produce a gravitational field and result in thrust for a spacecraft."
THIS IS AN ...IDEA... FROM THE 1950's!
My stoner friends come up with this kind of crap every damn day. "Dude.. if you make a large enough gravitational field on my car I can get those apple bee's riblets in like negative time which means I will have totally created time because I went so quickly!"
No thanks, no digg. - ConBaNo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That would make a great "Monkey News" segment on the Ricky Gervais show
- fitzy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So about a month to Alpha Centauri!
- SweetsGreen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dugg for coolness....I just hope they don't blow up the planet trying to prove this.
- lwdallas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Stargate is NOT a documentary
- Hypersapien, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To all the people complaining that we are working on stuff like this when there is no cure for cancer yet.. do you guys really think that astrophysicists and theoretical physicists would really be all that helpful in looking for a cure for cancer? Don't you think that kind of thing is best left to biologists and geneticists?
Contrary to what you learned from watching Gilligan's Island, not all scientists are equally well-versed in all branches of science. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if you look at the new scientist article this came from .. the guy who came up with this ***** is dead.. he didn't leave much readable stuff to challenge his theories. The extra dimensions he talks about is 2 dimensional. I am 3 dimensional and i just think that would probably hurt trying to cram me into two dimensional space.
Theoretically you should be able to come out at any time or space you want.. so 3hrs to mars is only if you take the scenic route.
If the speed of light is increase in these dimensions, then all kinds of physical constants change. For one the maximum energy is increase. If there is such a think as cosmic rays or gamma rays in this dimension then they would be even more destructive.
NASA and the military have already tested this long ago.. but these guys say they didn't do it right.
The military often spends huge amounts of money on stupid things.. just this year they paid a guy 25k to tell them if he thought teleportation was possible with today's technology.. his answer was since we haven't perfected quantum entanglement the pest bet was phychic.. This is total BS.
BY the way the new scientists, which is where this article originated.. just pulled the article.. i think they got tired of the honking laughter of geeky physicists - Mulo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Don't we all exist in the multi-verse but can only perceive 4 (x,y,z and time)? Other dimension are hidden from us because they are curled into matter in sub atomic scales. But we still exist in them...?
- waiwai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, I was thinking this was total crap, but the Wikipedia page makes the theory sound worth testing:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heim_theory - neoq36, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great, now Bush will have other planets to invade. An intergalactic war on terror. Wonder if he'll add the Borg to his list of axis of evil :)
- Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hyperspace and the best it can do is earth to mars in 3 hours? That is crap! That is only roughly 2% the speed of light, which really isn't special.
- masterdebater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0...The US air force has expressed an interest in the idea ...
Can someone explain why the hell for? Other than the obvious "Because were the military and ***** like this can't be in the hands of terrorists.. blah blah blah." but seriously - from my read of the article, as soon as you turn it on, your plane is already in the next country, unless the USAF is NASA, I can't see it being practical for military purposes on the planet.... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Try this on for size... 2 HOUR and 59 MINUTE trips to mars!!!!111!111!!1!
Anyways, I don't believe this. I used to be really into UFOs, aliens, unsolved mysteries, roswell, area 51, etc. I could have wrote that Popular Mechanics article years before. But the questions comes, why are all bigfoot photos blurry? Why are all UFO footage taken with a POS video camera? I think the UFO stuff and ex area 51 employees claiming to work on the advanced propulsion systems of captured alien UFO's is bunk. All the civilians think ALIEN UFO!!! because it looks a little different than your normal cesna, or because some flares were dropped over pheonix. Its just a cover for experimental aircraft, like the blackbird and newer stealths. They are always working on the next step, hence they let the rumors continue. Let them tell the media it was a flying saucer, better than telling the russians or even the canadians for that matter about our latest war technology (which by all means is supposed to be threatening to all non-americans, and hopefully not americans too). I doubt the next step, or even 20 steps, will let them rip into dimensions or propel anything physical to mars in 3 hours. Just because the movie Independance Day says we have alien technology, or the movie Stargate said it's possible to rip through time and space on a wormhole, doesn't mean its true or even possible. - Mjhavok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It says "theoretical device". In other words someone has just made this up.
