- 1Bad, on 06/29/2009, -0/+9Seeing that heart beating inside the machine was seriously disturbing...
- Diggpick, on 06/30/2009, -0/+6This is why I come to digg
- cJw314, on 06/30/2009, -0/+6I was wondering where the beating heart comes from... isn't the "donor" still alive?
- damnshoes, on 06/29/2009, -0/+5Just like Terminator 4, right?
- inactive, on 06/30/2009, -0/+4they did something like that on House once. The person was in a coma and was going to die, so they took the heart and gave it to another person.
Then again, that's a TV show. So who knows. - FlaNative, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3I admit the deed! --tear up the planks! here, here!
-E. Poe - ramilehti, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3It's called brain death. Look it up.
- compgeek, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3That's awesome a heck of a feat for science. I've never needed a transplant but I know people that have and I know how critical time can be. Congrats to the inventor and congrats to the receipient of that new heart hope you're doing well as they said
- OmegaNine, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3Umm...WTF sir?
- inactive, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3We are many years from understanding the brain and its wiring....It will be another 100 years of medical research before that is even a possibility......and then as such, can you imagine your consciousness being implanted into a strange body? That would be a seriously ***** up day for that person.
- kd1s, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2Here's the kicker. If you could incorporate a way to eliminate the waste products from metabolism you could keep the heart fresh forever. And there's the other technology that can eliminate the need to take anti-rejection drugs by stripping the heart cells of a certain component and replacing it with the recipients factor.

- bigteebo, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2I was wondering when they would stop the white styrofoam coolers that has an easy flies-off lid for something so essential like a human heart.
- Khast, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2Actually, that is quite impressive. A long way technology has come in the medical field. We have yet a long road ahead of us though.
- AEnkryption, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2You people should really watch more Grey's Anatomy. The only way that organs can be donated is if the person is still functionally alive, but without any viable brain function e.g. comatose, brain death, or are just about to die from a major injury not affecting the other organs, etc.
Watch more tv, It's educational! - idbjoshm, on 06/30/2009, -3/+5Dear Diggers. I'm sure there is a clever person who is going to do a Billy Mays meme involving the "Heart in a Box." In fact, I was going to do a Billy Mays meme here, I already wrote it out. However, with the latest news coming out that Billy died by a heart attack in his sleep, I think its best if we steer clearing of all cap pitching the "Heart in a Box." Thank you.
RIP Billy Mays.
PS, this device a true miracle of medical science! - cast55, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2Still-beating heart? Check.
Showing it to you before you die? Stand by... - SQLDigger, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2Awesome! Wait until Davy Jones hears about this!
- sonicpentatonic, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2You should check out the Living Heart Lab at the University of Minnesota. Real hearts beating outside bodies all over the place!
- byrdboy, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1RIP Billy Mays.
The world is a little worse off without him, you know. From what I understand he was a sincerely nice, self-made man. - ramilehti, on 07/01/2009, -0/+1No, it wouldn't necessarily. Even without a respirator a person can be brain dead and still have a beating heart.

Have a lovely and peaceful day. - VelvetoneFusion, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1Om Nam Shiva. Om Nam Shiva. Om Nam Shiva. Om Nam Shiva....
- zzzBrett, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1I was wondering the same. Maybe the heart can be obtained from someone who is dying of a chronic illness, and the heart is unaffected. Or a person on death row - maybe it would be a more useful way to do the deed.
Or it is from a typical recently-deceased organ donor, and the heart was restarted. - benitojuarez, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1I thought I only had to worry about hookers stealing my kidneys...
- tecak, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1touching a beating heart was even more disturbing...
- RyeBrye, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1They had this on Temple of Doom.
- yocouchdigga, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1***** Sapien 2.0 coming soon!
If we don't kill each other off, that is... - tecak, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1Don't have to, worked at TransMedics :-)
- anonydigg, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1Thanks. I read the entire article looking for the reason for why it's limited to 12 hours.
- inactive, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1originally a local from McKees Rock, PA....not too far from me
- hypkitsune11, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1Step 1: Cut a hole in the box
Step 2: put your heart in the box
Step 3: Make her open the box - inactive, on 06/30/2009, -0/+0Wait...so what's normally done with hearts? They are reanimated after transplant?
- mammapfohl, on 06/30/2009, -0/+0If you wrap the box, what a great gift idea!
- inactive, on 06/30/2009, -0/+0More like Pyschology majors.
- inactive, on 06/30/2009, -0/+0My first though upon reading the title was "skynet".
- cJw314, on 06/30/2009, -2/+1Could you be more of an ass, please? Thanks!
Wouldn't brain death cause the heart to... stop? - dantidote, on 06/30/2009, -2/+1***** science.
- RegalBegal, on 06/30/2009, -7/+2This movie was overrated! Why would a robot want to hump Megan Fox's leg? Buried.
