Ficus
Oleander
Chrysanthemum
Anthurium
Lily-of-the-valley
Hydrangea
Foxglove
Wisteria
All these plants sound like emo band names. - chakalakasp, on 07/09/2009, -0/+18All those and they don't even mention Datura? "Oh no, my hydrangeas gave me a sore stomach." Big deal. How many other flowers out there will net you two days worth of talking philosophy with your refrigerator, culminating with repeated taserings as you are chased naked through the mall by orcs?
- inactive, on 07/09/2009, -0/+16they're
- christoast, on 07/10/2009, -0/+11These are the ingredients to the 'Chuck Norris Salad.'
Yes. A Chuck Norris joke. - BalancingAct, on 07/09/2009, -1/+9The list is very inaccurate. For example, Daffodil's and many of the others are certainly not in the top 10 poisonous. Foxglove and Oleander are correctly on the list.
They've missed out:
Monkshood
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aconitum
Hemlock
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conium
Cowbane
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cicuta_virosa - dvsbastard, on 07/10/2009, -1/+9Well I was viciously beaten with a celery stalk... So I would definitely put celery in that list...
- Surferess, on 07/09/2009, -0/+8I can't believe Wisteria is number one! No wonder that is the name of the street on Desperate Housewives!
- sockpuppets, on 07/10/2009, -1/+9OM NOM NOM THUMP.
- suckmywake, on 07/10/2009, -0/+5This is a completely inaccurate and ***** article. Why should any plant be readily edible?? You ever just walk up to a shrub and start muching away? NOM NOM NOM NOM
No... 3/4 of our pharmaceuticals are derived from plants or compounds in plants, aka "phytoceutical". Also, the article says Chrysanthemum is toxic, sure maybe if you eat tons of it but I frequently have Chrysanthemum tea and have never felt anything from it besides the delicious flavor.
Water is also toxic if you drink a couple gallons of it.... So, next time you shower perhaps you should lather your body in activated charcoal or steroids... I expect better from 'livescience'.... - BasalCellBossk, on 07/10/2009, -0/+5buried for inaccuracy and multiple pages.
- inactive, on 07/10/2009, -2/+6Screw the trolls calling marijuana a poisonous plant. That is blatantly false.
- Behnood, on 07/10/2009, -0/+4"They look so pretty, but they could kill you."
Kinda like women hehe - Beowulf2112, on 07/10/2009, -0/+4The Alnwick Gardens have a garden specifically devoted to poisonous plants. Its probably the most interesting of the exhibits there
http://www.alnwickgarden.com/thegarden/the-poison- ... - WraTH017, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3You gotta be ***** me, these are the top ten? I don't know much about plants, but some of these sound extremely tame. What about hemlock and poison oak? I mean, the Ficus? Come on.
- Matman302, on 07/09/2009, -5/+8ZOMGOSH! They didn't mention...tobacco!
It's the most deadly plant of them ALL!!!! - stklaw, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3And these are in what way "top 10"?
- thegrantman, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3From the comments:
"Interesting....I read in a survival book years ago that virtually any flower was edible. Evidently this is very far from the case. Good thing I read this before it was too late and I told my toddler that eating garden flowers was okay. Thanks.
Incidentally, I hear that ironically enough, poinsettias, those red Christmas plants (the red parts are not flowers but bracts) commonly believed to be toxic may not be. I wouldn't recommend nibbling though until you get this from a proper medical authority."
There are so many things wrong here I don't know where to start. - itstodd, on 07/09/2009, -7/+10but their all natural................
- mrpunman, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3I drink Chrysanthemum tea. Ha!
- inactive, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3The title can be misleading...these are not the top ten most poisonous plants, they are probably the most common poisonous plants because of their ornamental use by humans. I would think it would be very difficult to make a true top ten most poisonous plants list...there are many plants with poisonous features.
- suckmywake, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3I'd think Hemlock is definitely much higher up than Chrysanthemum... At least you dont commonly make tea from conifers loaded with heart depressing alkaloids.
Looks like someone who knows nothing what-so-ever about flowers just flicked through a plant book while taking a dump and decided to bang together some disinformation for the interwebs. - Dream0Weaver, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3Burried for inaccuracy. Marijuana is not on the list.
/s - MisterChase, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3The castor bean plant is not on the list.
Seriously, folks, google "Castor Bean Plant", and I believe you will find that this plant contains the most lethal plant-based poison known to date. That ***** is not to be ***** with -- but if you ever want access to Nature's home-grown cyanide pills, you'll know what to look for. - sicsempertyrann, on 07/10/2009, -2/+4That's funny.. I don't see marijuana on here..
- tkcom, on 07/10/2009, -0/+2That list sure make me crave for a drink of hemlock.
- raintheory, on 07/10/2009, -0/+2Interesting article. ;)
I think the commas in number 9 are more toxic than the plant... - callinthelaw69, on 07/10/2009, -0/+2.
- christoast, on 07/10/2009, -0/+2It already did because i was talking about how old/lame it was not that it was literally a Chuck Norris joke.
- sockpuppets, on 07/10/2009, -1/+3Carnac: What is the first name of 10 women standing in line at the welfare office?
- itstodd, on 07/10/2009, -0/+2yeah yeah, YOU ARE right... if i care enough to edit i would change it
- splorpdotorg, on 07/10/2009, -1/+3You appear to lead a very interesting life.
- Swivelstick, on 07/10/2009, -1/+3In hard facts and numbers - any number of prescription medications made using plants. As far to many people die from wrong drug. wrong dosage or wrong time, especially in hospital...
- Swivelstick, on 07/10/2009, -0/+2No, REALLY???
- suckmywake, on 07/10/2009, -0/+2I've never heard of anyone being hospitalized from eating Daffodils... Fortunately most toxic plants are bitter or foul. I would imagine this to be enough to stop a child. If not, you cant get any more natural than that brand of natural selection.
Nice list btw, that looks very accurate and a lot more interesting. - BalancingAct, on 07/10/2009, -0/+2I think the article suggests those 10 as being the most poisonous, not because of their toxicity, but more because of the likelihood of people coming into contact with them. Notice that many/most of those plants are common garden flowers.
In terms of actual toxicity and potency of the poison, the list would be something similar to the following (not in any order):
Castor Oil Plant
Monkshood
Cowbane
Hemlock (Poison)
Oleander
Foxglove
Deadly Nightshade
English Yew (also classified as a tree)
Not sure about the other 2. It would have to be something like Henbane, Thorn Apple, or other. - CJ117, on 07/10/2009, -1/+2Here I was all cocky and ready with a "Hey Marijuana isn't on this list" joke thinking I was being clever and yet there's like 8 people ahead of me on it. FML
- NeddieSeagoon, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1Rhubarb leaves
- knobbysideup, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1So, in summary: "Don't eat flowers". Who the ***** eats flowers to begin with? Buried.
- endisnighe, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1What is the safest plant to be used as a drug? Marijuana-not one case of overdose EVER wow that plant looks delicious and damn I am hungry.
- Sideshowslob, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1Nightshade

- orangetiki, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1A lot of these flowers are common house flowers. "Damn Nature, You scary!"

- Skirrie, on 07/10/2009, -0/+0I hate Nightshade.. it will kill me way faster than it will other people (which is still rather fast) as I'm allergic to it (and related plants like tomatoes and potatoes)
