- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+56On a similar note - the UGLY VW Rabbit got 60 MPG.... BACK IN '85!!!!!!!!
Seriously guys? This is 2006. 20 years later, and car companies still can't offer us jack ***** in the way of economy. We should have flying cars that run on electrostatic energy generated from charged air particles, but the best we get is an Easter Egg looking POS that does 0-60 in 5 days and gets AT BEST 60 MPG?!?!
Unreal. - kimos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19No smart car?
http://www.thesmart.ca/ - KissTheRing, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18Ugly? I just got a galaxy grey metallic Honda Civic with nav and I have to say that I find it very stylish, especially the interior, although the outside looks pretty nice too.
Check out some pics from the link below
http://www.vtec.net/articles/view-article?article_id=396474 - danielwsmithee, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18Personally I think the Pontiac Grand Am is one of the ugliest cars available. But I guess that is just my opinion. The Honda Insight and Toyota Prius are no champs when it comes to looks, but the Civic is decent.
- GoldenEagle7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13When will there ever be an American car on this list?
- OnymousHero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11You'd do better to get a diesel - when petrol/diesel prices actually get bad (like over $2-$3 / litre) you can switch to biodiesel, even with the option of making your own - http://greasecar.com/
- bloodguard, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13I live in Northern Cali, land of the Prius posers and everyone I know that has one only seems to get mpg in the high 30's. My Jetta TDI is consistently gets between 50 and 55MPG (95% highway miles - mostly using biodiesel).
So I'm calling shenanigans on the 60/51 number. - mainfr4me, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I would love to see more diesels offered in the US. Just about the rest of the world has caught on. Better fuel economy, better torque, etc etc.
And biodiesel makes the deal even sweeter. - Renuvian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I live in Texas and drive a Prius. Last summer with the AC on full blast to combat super hot Texas weather I would get about 44-46 mpg, but during milder seasons I've gotten consistently around 50-54. It really just depends on how you drive it. When my parents borrowed my car for a weekend the Mileage was at 36. If you accelerate fast from stop lights etc then your mpg will be total crap.
60/51 is definatly a bloated number, but achievable if you drive like a robot. - cntp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9yeah - but the first time I saw one (now - this was when gas was only like $1.75 a gallon) I said "damn that's an ugly car", then I got around and saw the lisence plate - it said "70MPG&U?"
I stoped talking about how ugly it was then... - wardrive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Yeah, well i don't drive a hybrid but i still get average of 60 miles to the gallon. Motorcycles kick so much ass.
- jeylux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7because the EPA figure tests were done in IDEAL CONDITIONS.
go to www.fueleconomy.gov to see the REAL factors.
My dodge ram said 18 MPG on the tag, i'm lucky to get AT LEAST 14.5 MPG EVER. - roguepirate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8BTW that's 60 mpg EPA RATED milage, my actual milage in my Prius is roughly 50mpg. So these rated EPA milage ratings isn't really what you're really getting. It's probably lower in most cases.
- thedonga, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9want to save the environment and some pocket change? buy a used car....
the manufacturing process of a new car creates more polution and waste then that same car will produce in its lifetime.
so for all of you thinking about going out and buying a new hybrid car to feel a bit better about yourself at the pump....buy used.
or maybe next time you want to go down to the corner store...walk or ride your bike. - silentman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8The problem is that if you have read an automotive magazine recently, you would know that this isn't accurate. The EPA's fuel mileage tests are sadly outdated (but will be replaced in 2007). When the new testing arrives the fuel mileage on every car is probably going to drop, but hybrids most dramatically. The VW "TDI's" however have great gas mileage and will replace the hybrids on the top of the chart.
- jeylux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7In the united states the diesel is still considered "Dirty" even though they're 30-50% more fuel effecient than gas I.C.E engines. The Normal Gas engine loses something to the effect 62% of it's engery in the motor, before it even reaches the drive train... only 18% of avalible power makes it to the drive train, this is TERRIBLE.
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8"Fully agree I really do not understand why they do not just take a nice looking care like the Pontiac Grand Am and make a Hybrid version. Instead they make cars as ugly as possible most likely because they are in-bed with the oil industry"
Yeah, hook me up with Pontiac's characteristic ugly cladding and cheap plastic interior!
And yes, newevilmind, Honda does offer a hybrid accord. The markup is something like $6000, however. - ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10The Insight is one nasty looking car.
- BLKMGK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Because our fuel *is* dirty! In 2007 Sulphur is being removed from our fuel an emissions on diesels tightened up a great deal. Afterwards we might actually see others bringing in diesels but with our current fuel only VW is doing it. Supposedly the 2006 VW diesels will be produced right up intil the end of December and NO 2007 models will come in due to the new emissions - that's the word on VW Vortex. My local dealer was clueless about this though and acted as if it was no big deal. We just picked up a Jetta TDI for her and I may be getting one as well - in BUMPER TO BUMPER traffic she got 42MPG with the DSG auto on her first tank - I was floored. This puppy is not bad to drive and is the perfect commuter vehicle. Hard to find with NAV however but it's a very nice option despite being DVD based :-( Oh, cost out the door with everything but Package #2 was 28K all taxes, all title fees, plus some minor upgrades from the parts dept. ot too shabby...
- OnymousHero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Normally between 4-6 litres/100km for the 2 door version.
- oce222, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The argument that one should not buy a hybrid because all EPA figures are inflated is ridiculous. If they're inflated, then they are for all cars. If you buy a 40mpg hybrid vs a 20mpg non-hybrid, you're getting double the fuel efficiency that you would, even if it's actually only getting 30mpg vs 15mpg.
- signal15, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Grand Am? That's gotta be one of the ugliest cars out there. Actually, has anyone else noticed that all pontiacs strongly resemble Aiwa stereo systems:
Aiwa: http://www.jp.aiwa.com/products/homeaudio/stereo/img/ha_BMZ-K1_pht01.jpg
Pontiac: http://www.carstouch.com/images/pontiac_grand_am.jpg - xeeton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Pontiacs are American, but the Vibe engine is made by Toyota.
- greensky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I just saw a Smart Car yesterday (I do live in the US). The owner said they are selling in the US now. It may have come out to recently to be included in this article.
- tjhanley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5now if we could only get California to allow the sale of new VW's with TDI. I'd buy any model they offer.
http://www.theautochannel.com/news/2004/07/29/206426.html - rmulhern, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Awesome to see the VW diesels on there. I considered buying a golf TDI last time I bought a car, but they were too hard to find. Not to mention diesel engines are very reliable and will last a longgggg time where as with a hybrid you now have two engines to care for and maintain.
- phronko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Maybe this is only cars available in the USA. I have a smart and it's wonderful...not sure exactly how it compares to hybrids though. I do know that it only costs me $15.00 (Canadian) to fill it up, which is damn sweet.
- micahglasser, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8the 2006 civic looks sweet.
- jrsmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4woohoo.. Matrix on the top 10.. I traded in my z71 for an 06 matrix and my gas bill was cut by 50%.. I know what you're thinking.. I traded a truck for a station wagon.. Yes.. but I never used the bed of the truck anyways and didn't need a 4wd..
- mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Survival before Looks my friend..
- ajb2015, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Where is the Toyota Echo? They get like 40-45 mpg
- teknopagan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@cbreaker:
Apparently you haven't seen the crash test videos. The Smart Car has a fantastic safety cage in it - I'd be willing to bet in a head-on collision at 55 mph the guy in the SUV would come out worse than the guy in the Smart.
http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=smart%2Bcar - search for smart car -- pay particular attention to the one where they crash the Smart into a wall at 70mph. - Naruto28, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The Echo has been replaced by the Yaris, which also gets around the same fuel economy. So it should probably make the list as well...
- PezFr33k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You can buy them now from a few companies. Zap is probably the largest importer http://www.zapworld.com/cars/smartcar.asp
Unfortunately, they are only the gasoline version (not diesel), and usually run $27,000 - which is a rip-off compared to what they are selling for in Canada. - allaboutdatiki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4List of 2005 cars that score over 30 MPG combined:
http://www.geekbooks.com/hybrid_diesel_1000.htm - arizonagroove, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If that list is accurate, given that by the time you get to number ten you're down to a figure 30/36 that's a pretty sad state of affairs. I think if someone were to compile a list of "Top 10 Most Fuel-Efficient Cars for 2006 currently for sale in the UK" you would probably not even get under 50mpg by the bottom of the list.
But then over here we have small cars like the Toyota Aygo (http://tinyurl.com/fwole also sold with different body etc as the Citroen C1 and Peugeot 107) - stealthninjaman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What kind of gas mileage do the smart cars get?
- djdole, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Personally, I wouldn't get a Prius because I think they look like a roller-skate. But I do have to say that their ignition/key option is pretty cool. It's a proximity key. Meaning you need only have the dongle in your pocket, walk up to the door and it unlocks.
Then there is no key ignition inside, just a power button that only works when the dongle is in the car.
Hopefully more cars will adopt similar convenient security features. - TheTankengine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I never do this but I simply couldn't resist.
+Digg for the proper and awesome use of "shenanigans"! - pjdoland, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Hybrids are NOT energy efficient when you consider the total energy used over the lifetime of the vehicle (including production) over the total miles driven. In fact, they are VERY INEFFICIENT. If energy conservation is your goal, you are much better off buying a Scion.
http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/060331/sff031.html?.v=38 - rmulhern, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3the echo was stopped with the 2005 model. i remember reading an article claiming it sold horribly in the states, and just wasn't liked mainly because of its looks. the first version of the prius (pre-rollerskate/nerf football) looked very similar to the echo. my guess is the echo became the prius.
- rjespo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=6+litres%2F100km+in+miles%2Fgallon&btnG=Search
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=4+litres%2F100km+in+miles%2Fgallon&btnG=Google+Search - tharealmegaman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Exactly. EPA tests run the cars at ideal conditions: never above 50 or 60 MPH and with no air conditioning on. And that's with the brand new parts that aren't the same after even 15k miles.
- newevilmind, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5yeah, I guess a $6000 mark up is not very sensible financially. esp when it hardly gets better fuel efficiency and has a super expensive battery that needs replacing after 100,000 miles.
- chetg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4not produced any more...last in 2005. now the Yaris
- Doggpound, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sure but if im going to spend that much on a new vehical it better look good and their is no reason it souldn't
- OnymousHero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Don't forget that the figures quoted in the article are yankee gallons (3.8 litres) as opposed to British ones (4.5 litres) so the consumption figures will differ.
- scottbell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Absolutely untrue:
http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=433981
Much less energy is used to manufacture a vehicle than is used by the
vehicle during its useful lifetime so a small improvement in fuel
efficiency would have a significant impact on the energy footprint of
the motor vehicle industry. - Hubris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That's between 40-60mpg
- stomicron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That's great but the Civic hybrid doesn't come in a coupe.
