Yeah, because understanding how the world works as opposed to, say, funding wars of choice or bridges to nowhere, is a big waste.

"Its kinda funny that humans are responsible for global warming considering the average temperature of the earth is still higher than anything we have experienced since "global warming"."
This statement makes no sense. The average temperature... when? All indications point to swiftly rising higher averages since humans came on the scene than any period prior. That's... sort of what the report says. - TimmyK., on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Read the Bible."
I LOVE that book! It's hilarious! When are they finally going to make a movie out of it? - generalleoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why does it have to be humans though? Most living things blow ass and every living thing dies and rots giving off more gasses.
- TimmyK., on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Of course for it to be a lie you would have to believe it and I assume post people take global warming about as seriously as they take alleged UFO sightings"
No, only mindless American so called "conservatives" don't believe in Global warming. In fact the US is the only nation in the world where there is even a debate over whether global warming is real. Everyone else seems to have accepted the obvious.
All this new theory means is that there is just further evidence that humans can and are effecting the climate of our planet. This also does not mean that the past 150 years hasn't caused the most damage. It just means that even before the industrial revolution human activities were already causing global warming at a slower rate than what has happened in the last 150 years. - dpk87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I have an aunt that lives in Sweden and believe me, the world is getting warmer."
What the hell does that prove? - tonage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Perhaps you should read the mainstream studies on the matter.
So because something is mainstream, it is true. Didn't realize that. - Drahknon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"And who's to say humans caused it? An ice age was ending as humans came into power on earth...isn't it normal for temperatures to rise after an ice age? :P"
But that's just the thing. The reports on global warming have shown quite the opposite--that even when the Earth's average temperature has been higher, it has never risen so quickly. It's not about whether or not the temperature has __ever__ been higher, but rather __when__ and how long it took to get there. The entire point is that average global temperatures have risen very quickly since humans came on the scene and especially since the industrial revolution.
I can only wonder whether you and others here have read these reports at all? Such misunderstandings can only be attributed to negligence on your part. - tonage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There was an ice age and the earth did just fine warming form that without cars and hair spray. I do think there is warming, but does it have to be humans causing it? Perhaps it is just a natural trend. But then everyone would not get to blame the industrialized nations for killing the earth.
- CreateSomeNoise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Otherwise Al Gore and folks wouldnt have a "cause" to perpetuate.
- CreateSomeNoise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1...and if you dont agree with the mainstream, whichever way that stream happens to be traveling this day AND no matter if the mainstream is wrong or not, then you're labeled a kook. Nice world, eh?
- super_structure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is great news for the current U.S. administration. Deny that global warming exists until that's no longer possible, and then taut what a good thing it is. I love it.
@Hemidurango - "She is adjunct professor of mechanical engineering at McGill University."
"Decidedly not her field."
So you think a professor of mechanical engineering wouldn't know anything about thermodynamics? And what about your background makes you such an expert, then? Pardon me if I give the author the benefit of the doubt and don't just lump her as being sensationalist media. - hemidurango, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Oh, and of course I forgot the press who sensationalize every scrap of research into yet another doomsday prediction...
- Drahknon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Yup, forest fires have nothing to do with Lightning. Oh! and Enviromentalists who prevent cutting away the overgrown underbrush which would cut down the possibility or major forest fires helps alot. [/sarcasm]"
Well, if you read the article, the book's author doesn't attribute the problem to starting fires. Rather, he suggests that it was the clearing of forests that caused much of the change. Likely, he presents evidence in his book to show that humans have cleared more trees than one could attribute to natural causes.
Read first. Then comment. - RootDaddy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Most theologians agree that the universe was created between 4,000 and 8,000 BC. Which puts the age of the earth between 6,000 and 10,000 years old."
Since when were science and religion interchangable? A theologian studies religion, not rock and fossil samples. - Naui, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"How can this be, the Earth is only 10,000 years old..."
"...the world isn't even 8000 years old!"
"Uh, yeah it is, slick. The scientific generally accepted age of the world is 4.5 BILLION years. Look it up. And don't say stupid stuff until you've had remedial biology.
p3ngu1n"
Most theologians agree that the universe was created between 4,000 and 8,000 BC. Which puts the age of the earth between 6,000 and 10,000 years old. - JAFFA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0P3ngu1n : I think MAdaXe was being sarcastic - or if you're from the US then he's being ironic ;)
I reckon his last sentence proves the point :p
Nice article! +Digg+ - hdenton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Cows.. blame the cows
- joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Irony/Sarcasm seems to be an unheard of concept on DIGG.
- Drahknon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^^ Which "wise man" was that? I can't seem to find such a quote.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0p3ngu1n - better get your sarcasm chip checked.
- oxigen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I KNEW IT!!
- andyplace, on 01/12/2008, -0/+0Wow, you obviously can't detect sarcasm. MAdaXe is only joking.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Whatever. This suggestion is not close to proving anything. I hope my tax dollars didn't contribute to this study. Can I get a grant to study the affect of my roommate's gasseous emissions? Perhaps as a function of White Castle sliders?
- hemidurango, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0""Oh, and of course I forgot the press who sensationalize every scrap of research into yet another doomsday prediction..."
I would think so as well, but this writer is actually a scientist in Montreal. I think her PhD was in thermal mechanics. I remember hearing her name in regards to artificial muscle principles."
From the header of the article:
"She is adjunct professor of mechanical engineering at McGill University."
Decidedly not her field. On this one, she's just another reporter, parroting the theory and giving enough data to support the theory. (which they at least admit is "radical") - ReinMasamuri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@MrPhelps
"Obviously when humans learned to use fire, they caused forest fires either on purpose or by accident."
Yup, forest fires have nothing to do with Lightning. Oh! and Enviromentalists who prevent cutting away the overgrown underbrush which would cut down the possibility or major forest fires helps alot. [/sarcasm]
"But the amount of material burned was at most a small fraction of the biomass, now we are not only still burning forests and flooding plains at a fast rate but also burning fossil fuels which are the result of hundreds of millions of years of stockpiling to the point that they are almost depleted (in the case of oil at least)."
Volcano's push out alot more than we do in greenhouse gasses.
Look, the truth of the matter is that no one knows how this world should be, so how do we know what we're doing to it. Much less what things we are doing WRONG to it. - Kellan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"This statement makes no sense. The average temperature... when? All indications point to swiftly rising higher averages since humans came on the scene than any period prior. That's... sort of what the report says. "
It makes perfect sense. He is talking about the average temperature on earth in it's past 4 billion years of existence. Even knock that down to 500 million or so and I'm guessing the average temperature would be well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. And who's to say humans caused it? An ice age was ending as humans came into power on earth...isn't it normal for temperatures to rise after an ice age? :P - hufnmouth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Oh, and of course I forgot the press who sensationalize every scrap of research into yet another doomsday prediction..."
I would think so as well, but this writer is actually a scientist in Montreal. I think her PhD was in thermal mechanics. I remember hearing her name in regards to artificial muscle principles. - ChazKato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0haha, i have a class by the guy who co-wrote this theory at UVA.
- BASK1104, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its kinda funny that humans are responsible for global warming considering the average temperature of the earth is still higher than anything we have experienced since "global warming".
- carbonNYC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great way to off-load responsibility on our ancestors and feed our denial!
"It's not our fault. THEY started it!"
(The difference, of course, being that we KNOW we're screwing ourselves and our descendants.) - Drahknon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"look harder"
Uhhhh, how? Your quote turns up nothing. Maybe you should try quoting this "wise man" correctly... or, you know... just say it. - hammerattack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Ruddiman suspected that these discrepancies were not driven by natural causes."
And that, ladies and gentleman, explains why Global Warming is a ***** theory. - kuru225, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0but i have not made my plastic quota for this year so i am safe
- scbysnx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Irony/Sarcasm seems to be an unheard of concept on DIGG." yeah thats what I'm getting here..
ok idiots responding to most of the religious 'sarcasm' learn what sarcasm is and how to recongnize it in daily use THEN start posting again.. until you have done this SHUT UP - knightblade2oo4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0actually, philoushka, if you would quit pulling facts out of your judgemental ass, you would know that few christians think the earth is 6000 years old.
Seeing as how Christians mostly live out of the new testament of the bible, it would be the Jewish population, who lives from the old testament, that think it's 6000 years old. - ObligatoryDeath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Screw the story that reporter is HOTT!!
- TheProfessional, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Humans give themselves way too much credit.
- hater2win, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Where are all the southpark jokes at?
- joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"And that, ladies and gentleman, explains why Global Warming is a ***** theory."
Amd that, ladies and gentlemen, explains nothing. - kuru225, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0everyone knows that there is no such thing as Global warming,
now will someone please help me prepare for the Zombie invasion - cantaclaro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Carlin has it right.
http://www.hopedeferred.com/digg/PlasticCarlin.txt - nolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0look harder
- nolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Of course for it to be a lie you would have to believe it and I assume post people take global warming about as seriously as they take alleged UFO sightings
- cantaclaro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0We have so few problems here in the US that we worry about this *****. You think some poor ***** in Africa covered in flies gives a ***** if the world has gotten 5 degrees hotter over the last 4 billion years.
This is retarded. Use your brains to solve a real problem rather than worrying whether or not to buy a hybrid car to stave off T3H 1mP3nD1ng d()()M of planet 3 star system X973UV47892.
Penn and Teller's show *****! covered this topic pretty handily and yes it was deemed *****! - joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0er..attributable
- joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 I can't seem to find such a quote.
Since when does not having an attributal source prevent idiots from spewing propaganda? ;o) - djoek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Woo hoo! Go Humans! Yay us!
- domc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0>>>Why does it have to be humans though?
- ksgant, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1How can this be, the Earth is only 10,000 years old and Man and all the creatures as they are today were exactly like they were back then!
This according to some of the bible guys. - super_structure, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I'm glad there are real scientists and engineers investigate the environment. If we left it up to sarcastic Digg readers and Penn & Teller, we'd probably still be in the stone ages. Of course, then there'd be no Digg, huh?
