- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+43http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenCola
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33C) Drinking some water or juice without all that fake flavoring, high fructose corn syrup and other nasty chemicals.
- drinkGreen, on 10/12/2007, -7/+31which is cheaper (in time and money)?
A) buying bottles, powder, and other crap and making your drink, or
B) walking down the street, buy a 12 pack, and drinking them while watching someone else try to make them by hand? - apocalizer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23Personally, I would like to see an open-source candy bar. Ingredients are easier to come by. Maybe something like OpenSnickers or something.
- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23Which is more rewarding -
Going to Best Buy and picking up an HP PC, assembled and nice, or putting together your own system, piece-by-piece, and making it work? - apocalizer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21@scott1:
You're going to need to compile the Coke first. - kevinmotel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13thats not the idea. which is easier, using windows, or compiling your own OS (i.e., Linux) and who knows, someone might make a cola that tastes better, they start to sell it, they get some investments, they expand, pretty soon coca-cola has another competitor.
- tjtoml, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Ah, but which is more entertaining?
and the article said they made like 54 litres.
i.e. 27 two litre bottles of Coke
about... 3$A apiece
27x3$A= 81$A
I don't know how much the ingredients cost, but I doubt it would be too much more than 81$A. - scott1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11"Although originally intended as a promotional tool to explain free software / open source software"
So do you have a link to download it? Downloading coke will change the world. - Langford, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Having the recipe is nice, but it would seem that the real fun would be coming up with new flavors.
- clickwir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8+10 points for doing it under the GPL!
"This cola recipe is released under the GNU general public licence." - Funkly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yes its true, Coca Cola is the only US company that can import the Coca Plant and there are strict restrictions on that. BUT this paticular story comes from the UK, maybe with enough investments they can get permission to do the same.
As well, its sounding like monoply maybe in Cokes future. - sembetu, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Which is cheaper (in time and money)?
A) Rubbing one off
B) Taking the time to get to know someone well enough to have a meaningful intimate relationship. - Matadon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@rekrapt
Er, there's a big disconnect between 'we disagree with your practices' and 'you are morons and produce crap'.
They like the product, but don't like the company behind it, so they've created their own; that way, they can get the product they want without compromising their ethics.
I think that would be called 'activism' and 'self-responsibility'. Something to which my fellow Americans seem vehemently opposed. - Bucky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Don't forget the beer that's free (as in speech AND as in beer): http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/4718719.stm
- bigstinky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Agree with most that "there's nothing like the real thing"...etc, but dugg for the interesting read. A bit off topic, but can anyone remember the days not so long ago when Coke, and "pop" was made with real sugar and sold in glass bottles? Some stores around here sell glass bottle 8oz. cokes, but it's made with high fructose corn syrup instead of real sugar. Just not the same.
- ThrasherC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Hell, I've seen 2-liters here in the US on sale for $0.69...I regularly buy it for less than a dollar.
- liuite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3bottled coca-cola from Mexico doesn't use real sugar any more. i used to buy imported coca-cola in mexican grocery stores. now if you read the label, it says corn syrup...which defeats the purpose of importing it.
- pbuschma, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Nothing can compare to the real things since the Company is the only one with a license to import the coca plant, which, to this day is a vital ingredient. However, the cocaine is of course removed from the coca plant in this cola making process since after 1908 (may be wrong on the exact date, but thereabouts).
- helfire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3apo: says i'm missing says i'm missing libsugar.so.1
- elephantdog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There is something to be said about people who don't appreciate public information, and it isn't nice. Open source food is at least as important as OSS and you should all beg for forgiveness to the information overlords lest they close off the pipes of the internet and leave you as a slave to Coca-Cola.
- EdLesMann, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Meh, I will just wait for it to hit the Debian testing repositories. Although I still am fuzzy on the details. Will it be 'apt-get drink opencola'?
- Awap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I haven't had it confirmed by other sources, but I have been told that the coke that is kosher for passover (look for a kosher symbol on the top) is made with real sugar. I don't know what the rules are, but it's something about not having corn during passover. I can't taste the difference, and like I said, I haven't gotten a second source to even confirm that there is a difference. It's something to look out for.
- Odo08, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've had sugar based Coke is Costa Rica and it is slightly better, cleaner tasting and a bit more sweet than the stuff in the United States. It is likely due to the real cane sugar being used down there.
I'm not certain everyone can taste the difference. My sister was a production manager for Coke plant in the United States and she believes most cannot tell the difference between sugar Coke and corn syrup Coke.
I for one would pay a little more for glass bottles and cane sugar Coke. (Maybe I'm just a Coke snob?) - EricAnderton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4What can I say? Its tough to find soft drinks in common grocery stores (Whole Foods being an exception) that dont' contain high-fructose corn syrup and phosphoric acid. Just google around and you'll see why those two can be troublesome.
So having a way to take the DIY route, and have some (arguably) healthier ingredients in your soft drinks is probably the biggest win here. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31916, if memory serves.
Regardless, since then, Coke hasn't used 'virgin' plants. It has used the spent coca leaves after the pharmaceutical companies were done with them. It is these 'used' leaves that Coke has the only license to use. - apocalizer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3So the exchange rate from points to diggs is 10:1? Interesting...
- ThrasherC, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You know, they sell caffeine-free Coke. You've probably seen it in the store. Its called "Caffeine-Free Coke."
- KVargs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i think ive heard that the coke in mexico still uses real sugar rather than the frustose syrup or whatever we've got here
- dotorg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It still contains coca extract. Leaves are imported into the US under an exclusive license with the DEA and US Treasury to a facility in New Jersey that creates the coca extract and removes and destroys the cocaine in it. That extract is a major component of the "natural favors" or "vegitable extracts" (depending on the country you're in) that is listed on the label.
- RickySan65, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2uhm.. leave out the sugar, sugar substitutes and whatnot?
- coopa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@pkulak
Cola does tend to be a lot more acidic than water, and most fruit juices. I understand that citrus fruit juices are acidic though, yet i seriously doubt that they are as damaging to teeth.
I also doubt the sugar content of fruit juice is anywhere near the level in coke. - UltraNurd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Now if only Pepsi would open-source Mountain Dew, GNU would be unstoppable!!!
- Twango, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think we need to hear from the Canadians on this.
Is it more fun to buy your back-bacon at Safeway, or make it yourself starting with baby-pig?
My guess is making your own is like "El Snore". - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Brilliant. Now what's the recipe for Diet OpenCoke?
- Crin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2So... presumably to make decaff coke you just leave out the caffiene!
I may try this then, I gave up caffiene and miss coke terribly. - noeljohnhoward, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3i got half way through this article, than i thought to myself...
Dude, you still have a life, right? - pbuschma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, you have good memory if you drank a lot of it before 1916....
- arizonagroove, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Here in the UK a 2-litre bottle of coke from the Spar shop costs £1.75,"
Spars tend to be small local shops and you always pay a premium at such places. In my local Tesco it's about £1.35. I drink Tesco's own brand Diet Cola. It's only 39p for 2 litres and it's perfectly decent stuff. Better than Diet Coke for sure. - AlphaSoulja, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Open source Cola?
- LegendarySock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Step 3: The cola syrup
2 litres water; 2kg sugar
Why not just give us a direct shot of sugar and kill us now? - pandich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I know they removed the "coca" a long time ago, but am I missing something? Where is the "cola"???
- malkdome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1neat idea, might cost more than buying at the local store, but doing it yourself is half the fun... and on soda, in the US most soda uses high-fructose corn syrup since the mid 80s, and in Canada many if not all sodas use pure cane sugar, tastes much better...
- inigomntoya, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2HAHA! Gotta love it when a geek creates a recipe.
I wonder if anyone has modified it for all of the versions of Coke...
Or *GASP* Pepsi... - aclements, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes. And, believe it of not, cocaine was an ingredient in the original Coke.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2tastes more like pepsi to me
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"bottled coca-cola from Mexico doesn't use real sugar any more. i used to buy imported coca-cola in mexican grocery stores. now if you read the label, it says corn syrup...which defeats the purpose of importing it."
I believe that even though it says corn syrup, it is still cane sugar that they're using. - pkulak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@deadbaby
Juice has just as much sugar in it as soda. I seriously doubt it's any better for you. It's even the same kind of sugar, fructose. ;) -
