- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12FYI. Everyone remember not to clap at the end or they might just do an encore.
- joshuatree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This guy is suffering from cognitive dissonance because he believes that silence == noise.
- duczduczducz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3rodball, if musicians make mistakes during a song they just play thru it....so basically if they mess up just be ready for about 50 years of one horrible sounding note
- rodball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What's sad is that in 2311, somebody will hit the wrong note and they'll decide to start over.
- Bastian227, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I like the idea. Nowadays, we want to grab the fastest car, race to the end of life, and call it meaningful. People are too disjoined from the human experience.
- sorriso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just composed a longer piece of piece of music. The tempo is 60bpm, is in 4/4 time, and starts off with a whopping 7,889,248,800 measures of rest. See you next millenium.
- verticalmule, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2not only that but he's immortal too
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2John Cage was a da-daist composer. His work isn't intended to BE music but to comment or reflect on the nature of music. Even if you don't like it, it has been very influential on the formation of modern aesthetics and deserves notice.
The fact that so many people react this strongly to it tells me that it's certainly evocative -- a sign of good art. Apathy is the sign of bad art, not hatred.
For the record, I don't think it belongs on digg but then 50% of the ***** that hits the front page doesn't belong on digg either. But then, someone must be digging it for it to get out here - Matteos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2orchestra- *plays one note.*
conductor - "OK thanks everyone, see you next year." - Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, the notes are years apart, that has to be some riveting music
- scottpatricks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Imagine living next door. Hearing the same note for years... insane.
- mklopez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2efisher: If you want the MP3, you can hear the first notes in this edition of the discovery news podcast: http://netstorage.discovery.com/dsc/podcast/2006/01/News20060106.mp3
And to everybody else: yes, is silly, but those german guys are taking it seriously; that's why it deserves to be dugg! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I will complete reading the article in 300 years. After 100 more years I shall then digg this article. And after another 200 years I will then report it as "old news."
- Kitsune818, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You know what would be cooler? Get some old missile silo/hardened bunker, set it up with some sort of super-redundant self sustaining power (say, nuclear, or solar in combination with wind.. something fool proof), build a super reliable computer just powerful enough to play a midi file, and set the thing playing "Head like a hole" by NIN for the next thousand years. That would be worth it just so when the people of the future find it or Kirk beams down there, they can wander around going "WTF??"
If you think about it, it isn't much more odd than building a pyramid.. and would be very technicly challenging to actually pull off. - Djerrid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1NPR did a story on this. A quick search will find it for ya.
- tavisjohn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It is such a slow song that no single human will be able to hear it in it's entirity...
And when it is all done, if you reverse it and speed it up 335,858,400 times you will hear "Satan eats cheese whiz". - StarSaber, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is so silly that it is interesting. I Digg it!
- dongiaconia, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3@joshuatree: Love the proper use of the double equals to test for equality, rather than assignment...
- jmcqk6, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is the same guy that wrote a concerto for two tugboats
- efisher, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Where can I download the mp3. If there is anyone around to hear the final note.
- skell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This will be practically impossible to go 639 years uninterrupted. What about weather, war or other disasters? Vandals, equipment failure, etc?
This is a joke. I give it 5-10 more years tops. - joeljkp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Oh, come on, people. It's the guy's idea of art (and obviously other peoples', too), and the church decided to let it happen. If you don't want to listen to it, don't.
- graywh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Cage is famous for his eccentric compositions. The one using several hand-dialed radios is interesting. This is worse than 4'33".
- jafojsharp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I will just TIVO it and fast forward later!!!
- Maverick83, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1We should have nuked Germany instead.
- SweetsGreen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Those Germans are up to somthing......
- vatchea, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1crazy germans.
- Terjon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Well it's an interesting idea to see if people will still see it as music if the length is expanded beyond a human's attention span. However, and this is a huge however, the amount of expansion is just foolish. He will not be alive to ensure the piece is performed properly and the concept of using one musical instrument non-stop for 639 years is ludicrous. I am not an expert on organs, but it has moving parts and air must flow through it to generate notes. The tubes themselves would wear out before the piece is completed.
- mklopez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1http://www.john-cage.halberstadt.de/new/index.php?l=e
- Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm digging this purely for the phrase "John Cage Organ Project."
- tacom8, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Sure it will go on for 639 years, but it will make the digg front page every 40 days...
- jnorris441, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Maybe that will keep the Fourth Reich busy enough not to start World War VI 200 years from now.
- jnorris441, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I began my 75 years of not giving a ***** a few seconds ago.
- lilazndrumrboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1first off, john cage himself has really nothing to do with this (he died in 1992, duh?) and it was some crazy idiots who took his music and decided "Hey, let's play each note 100000 times their length, then we can set a new record!......".......complete dumbasses.........neways, there was a theory behind 4'33" to realize that every aspect of life created it's own music and accord in their own way........and that through silence people may be able to appreciate this fact of life.........that's john cage for ya.........
- spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0omg -- i dont get it.
are there like, people there 24/7? like, the musicians? or is it like, just sitting there, and every few months they come in and hit a note and then get out of there. i mean, cmon, wtf..
but hey, i bet you get a good deal on your tickets "a 700yr concert, w00t!" - jshpro2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1This is so... retarded
digg++ - fkngroovn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0This is just ***** stupid
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I just heard about it and I'm already bored by it.
- xero9, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0it's articles like this I wish there was an "un-digg" option, so people who think this is total bs can try and get it off the front page
- Harami, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0this is bs
- accidental, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0So stupid.
- subscribtion, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0NO! 639 years means it will be posted on Digg over 100,000,000 times!
- shiftless, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Old, and very stupid.
- haloevo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0this is rather gay.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0f'n stupid... sorry, john cage is an idiot
- easterlingman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0And there will be a digg about it every month from now until it's over. Dupe
- intelsucks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0"We should have nuked Germany instead." - maverick83
Hey F U. I might not have been born if we nuked Germany instead of Japan! - dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0...what the hell.. This isn't stupid, it's beyond it..
"The fact that so many people react this strongly to it tells me that it's certainly evocative -- a sign of good art. Apathy is the sign of bad art, not hatred.", no, it shows some people can see how stupid he is.. It's not fecking art (Not even at a modern-art level), it's.. a word that might be invented by the time this "song" has finished..
Hmm.. If I say I'm going to press a button on a keyboard every few thousand years will I get this much attention? I think not
..I'm struggling to see why someone is even bothering doing this, in any way.. It's by far the stupidest thing I've seen (because it's so serious..)
..heheh
- Ben - whackaxe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0creating 4 and half minutes of total silence doesn't exempt him from a big cup of STFU.
- ApplePenguin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0so ***** stupid....
the composer's crazy, 4 minutes and 33 seconds of something with total silence, all meticulously noted? crazy... and, before somebody flames me or whatever, read the article first, I'm referring to another "piece" this guy "composed"
and, the people doing this are crazy... what a ***** waste of money....
and, it looks like this is being played mostly by nobody, for those of you that are curious... the keys are held down with weights. -
