- InMSWeAntitrust, on 06/25/2009, -4/+40DAMN BRAIN YOU SCARY.
- FeazeR, on 06/25/2009, -0/+22Amazing! Just like this one: http://www.popularscience.co.uk/features/feat16.ht ...
- directedition, on 06/25/2009, -0/+6A much better demonstration for us color-blind folk =/
- itsok2kry, on 06/25/2009, -2/+8You just blew my ***** mind.
- Zippo, on 06/25/2009, -0/+5Curiously, when I saved the image to my desktop, the thumbnail of the icon looks like this:
http://www.extracaffeine.com/misc/spiral_icon.png
I guess when you reduce the size of the image, the colours blend and change, similarly to how our eyes perceive it.
(on that note, I love how easy it is to quickly take screenshots of seperate windows and elements with OS X) - inactive, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3The effect still works fine, even when you can clearly see that the purple/orange stripes are separate from the blue/orange. The point is that the brain doesn't just process a single color, rather, it takes in that information and processes the colors around it too, thereby modifying our perception of said color. It's not a matter of colors mixing below the resolution of our eyes as you suggest, though that certainly plays a part in perception too.
- Nekateman, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3this one is really good too.
though it's freaky how easily deceivable the human brain is... - darthjure, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3Too bad the original image is so pixelated.
- 3Den, on 06/25/2009, -1/+4Check this out - relevant and interesting.
http://www.wendycarlos.com/colorvis/color.html - Yage2006, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2Actually its you that looks like the idiot because he was debunking the fake moon landing conspiracy.
- leftofthecenter, on 06/25/2009, -3/+5I don't know that I agree with the analysis of the illusion. I mean it may be true for explaining the considerable color difference when looking up close, but when you back up, like in the thumbnail, the color of some becomes blue because you essentially have purple shading going over it, making the color cooler, while the others have orange shading, making the color warmer.
- Johnnyjm, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2And there you have it. We can't even trust our own brains.
We are so screwed. - nepidae, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2My brain is leaking.
- decet, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1Shucks, folks, I'm speechless.
- onechad, on 06/25/2009, -1/+2It has to be. If it was anti-aliased, the colors would have to be blended, which would make the values for the blue and green parts different from each other.
- Lonandubh, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1aspolding's not scary?
- stoneage7, on 06/25/2009, -1/+2this guy has written a lot of interesting articles about astronomy here: http://www.badastronomy.com/
like the one about the "fake" moon landings: http://www.badastronomy.com/bad/tv/foxapollo.html - skipvt, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1Great, now my eyes hurt.
- inactive, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1It's a shame we're getting aliasing in the center due to resolution problems. Damn nyquist theorem.
- MacEnvy, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1He's also on Digg:
http://digg.com/users/BadAstronomer - Mentat44, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1At least he didn't spam Digg like you do every day...
- burningrobot, on 06/26/2009, -0/+1What could possibly warrant my comment being dugg down?
- DirtPile, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1The Q and the Grey?
- proliance, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1I can't trust my own brain, but in 5 minutes I'm going to maneuver a 5000lb vehicle onto a long concrete slab filled with other quick moving, heavy objects. Wish me luck.
- CleoQKazoo, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1which school do you go to?
- MacEnvy, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1You're right, I used a color picker and the thumbnail actually IS made up of separate blue and green colors. My guess is that when it got shrunk down, it interpolated nearby pixels and created new colors to approximate at the new resolution. It's not quite the same process that our brains are going through, but very interesting nonetheless.
Good catch. - renanrrinaldi, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1That was awesome!
- inactive, on 06/26/2009, -0/+1my bad guys i read that quickly :(
- J0415, on 06/26/2009, -0/+1It's a conspiracy!
- brainiac8008, on 06/26/2009, -0/+1Anyone else go back to see if the zoomed in picture was a square?
- inactive, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1I just had a BSOD in my brain...
- Goodsorse, on 06/26/2009, -0/+1color blindness ruins this "illusion"
- inactive, on 06/25/2009, -1/+1you look like an idiot because the moon landing was real
- ahwang, on 06/25/2009, -1/+1mine's not... it asplode :(
- AriaNoelle, on 06/25/2009, -0/+0Heh, interesting. I noticed the spirals being different colors, but not that the green and blue were the same color, a green-blue.
- darthjure, on 06/25/2009, -2/+2It must have the same effect on the service that Digg uses to make their thumbnails. The image on the front page definitely shows blue and green stripes. It must average the two colors (green & magenta; green & orange), like our eyes do, to create the thumbnail that no longer contains the stripes.
- esb82, on 06/25/2009, -1/+0And for "Green and Blue": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3L-sy5GEYZQ
- MacEnvy, on 06/25/2009, -2/+1That's the joke.
- adstretch, on 06/25/2009, -2/+0did you even read the article that went with it?
- burningrobot, on 06/25/2009, -7/+1Reminds me of a project I had to do with color swatches for a 2D Fundamentals class.
- liltbrockie, on 06/25/2009, -12/+1FAKE
- inactive, on 06/25/2009, -16/+342 Diggs now.
Can someone please let us know if it goes up? - DaviDTC, on 06/25/2009, -15/+250 digg 6 comments and on the front page.
- MAGZine, on 06/25/2009, -18/+331 Diggs, 0 comments and front page.
That's amazing. - rnawky, on 06/25/2009, -19/+3Yeah I just saw this on Reddit.
30 Diggs, Front Page, 1 Comment (Well three now)
Gotta love the algorithms!
