- drgkstep, on 10/31/2008, -1/+59Try shooting a .357 into a bucket of water, it won't put a hole in the bucket. Water is much more effective at stopping a bullet than this article suggests. Perhaps the question should have been how much water would stop a bullet from penetrating YOU. My guess is that the bullet may still be moving at 3 meters but the amount of water needed to slow it down to non-lethal velocity may indeed be much less. I'm going out to the pool with my 8 year old and an Uzi to test this theory, brb.

- jggube, on 10/31/2008, -1/+45I really needed to know how you get those stripes in toothpaste. Really.
- inactive, on 10/31/2008, -0/+37As Mythbusters showed, the type of gun greatly affects the results. If I remember correctly, ironically, more powerful guns actually penetrate less because the force of striking the water is so great.

- oldhick, on 10/31/2008, -1/+9Certainly not a very good one since he attends a Christian church and professes his Christian faith. That is frowned on in Islamic tradition.
- Steve1802, on 10/31/2008, -1/+8Not entirely sure why everyone is so upset with this, these books are supposed to be silly and fun, albeit pointless, take a look at other books in the series "Does Anything Eat Wasps?" and "Why Don't Penguins' Feet Freeze". Chill out.
- jorisb, on 10/31/2008, -0/+7But what about the extreme case of pins and needles? When you wake up and your entire arm is paralyzed, and the only way to move it is to use your other arm... I love that *****.
- eejbm, on 10/31/2008, -0/+7It's to be found on a female - don't worry, you'll never have to worry about it.
- tallguyg, on 10/31/2008, -0/+7I'm so glad they answered the pins and needles question. I get so sick of people always thinking you are cutting off blood circulation. if you cut off circulation your limb will be starved of oxygen and DIE, not get all prickly.
but actually they only got if half right. its actually when the pinched nerve becomes unpinched and sensory signals flood back into the brain and the brain cant process it all at once. thats what causes the pins and needles.
does anyone care? didnt think so. i'll shut up now - Treshnell, on 10/31/2008, -0/+7Mythbusters answered the bullets in water one. I believe their verdict was considerably less than 3 meters, for most types of bullets.
- griz, on 10/31/2008, -0/+7And any half brain knows that writing formulas on a chalk board doesn't make for good television. Firing large caliber weapons into water to make explosive results does.
- GarrettGrimsley, on 10/31/2008, -0/+6Under the hood.
- dse78759, on 10/31/2008, -0/+6Is that episode 'Firearms Folklore'? Because it's on Nov 2. FYI.

- Slade605, on 10/31/2008, -2/+8Not with you here.
- Murdats, on 10/31/2008, -0/+6to stop the 1% of people who bitch about not getting a bag.
most people either won't care or will ask to not have a bag, but you get the people who want everything bagged and to avoid talking to such stupid people its safest just to assume everyone is stupid till proved otherwise. - WhoDoneIt, on 10/31/2008, -0/+6Because you don't shower after you spank it?!?
- evanfrey, on 10/31/2008, -0/+5"pedantic"
- Treshnell, on 10/31/2008, -0/+5There was a little more at work than just calculating water density, bullet speeds and etc. Physical testing far more easily reveals things like bullet disintegration than working out a formula on a chalk board.
The answer given in the formula exactly demonstrates this. Given that the bullet doesn't disintegrate, and isn't travelling at an angle, 3 meters would be the generally safe depth. But Mythbusters found that bullets do disintegrate, and thus you'd generally be safe just a few feet below the surface. - inactive, on 10/31/2008, -1/+6What did Slade605's 5 fingers say to fuzzyburger's face?...
- ParanoydAndroid, on 10/31/2008, -0/+5Why, when i reach into the dryer to grab a particular article of clothing, is it _always_ on bottom?
