- beast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8That ***** is bananas. B-A-N-A-N-A-S. Sorry, had to do it.
- forteller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Why do people who are allergic to latex react to bananas and other fruits?
Plants which are not very similar may have proteins which are similar. This is mainly because, though the plants look different, the chemical processes necessary for the life of the plants are very similar, and depend on similar proteins. If you become allergic to these proteins you will react to all the plants which contain them. Probably the reason why people become allergic by contact with latex rather than by eating bananas alone is that proteins kept on the skin for long periods cause a different immune reaction in the body to proteins which we eat.

More (technical) information higher up on that page. - pgfitzgerald, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Banana's aren't going extinct.
http://www.snopes.com/food/warnings/bananas.asp - Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That's not the whole story though: it's not all light and glory for the banana--the banana has a very high glycemic index, which means the sugars found in the banana absorb very rapidly into the blood stream. This is VERY bad for you if you have diabetes or if you're trying to lose weight.
Remember the Atkin's craze? They missed the mark by one factor: it is not the amount of carbohydrates that impacts weight gain so much as the rate of their absorption. A high rate of absorption (a.k.a. a 'high glycemic index') causes the body to react very quickly by increasing insulin. Insulin, if you forget your A.P. Bio class from high school, is an anabolic hormone; it causes your body to build and store. If you have lots of calories and the food has a high glycemic index, you end up storing calories as fat unless you use them up right away (as an athelete might). - Flashman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The funny thing about store-bought bananas is that they don't have proper seeds, and need to be grown from rhizomes (roots, sort of). Bananas CAN grow fertile seeds, but only as a rare mutation (~1 in 2000 bananas). This lack of genetic diversity means that bananas are vulnerable to devastation from disease.
As to the banana going extinct, it's happened to one variety already. Until the 1960s, most bananas were of the Gros Michel variety, until a fungus wiped out the whole species. And the current dominant variety, the Cavendish, is vulnerable to a couple of bugs that aren't yet widespread. But it's possible. - toomyw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ummm, are there any footnotes here for reference?
While I like bananas, the complete lack of documentation has me wondering how much is true and how much we want to be true. - Raian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Here are some more little known facts: Bananas cure poverty, herpes, pregnancy, parking tickets, animated gifs, baldness, and most importantly when you eat a banana, a chemical is released in your spine that gives you super powers like x-ray vision, shape-shifting abilities, and allows you to breath in the vacuum of space.
(results may vary, do not take banana if you're allergic to ever-delicious latex) - Dysheekie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Orange you glad I didn't say banana?
- cwoolf34, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Funny how semen is a anti-depressent as well as bananas... Something about the shape maybe?
- wilcohol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We might be having shortages of bananas at the market due to the Digg effect ~
- chamblah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1at the bottom of the article
"Remember: If you have a latex allergy, check with your doctor before eating bananas"
weird - AT0MIC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I support stupidity +digg!
- firebird2110, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't know for sure about adults but...
"Some foods can make your child's constipation worse. Limit the amount of milk, ice cream, cheese, white rice, bananas, cooked carrots, and applesauce in your child's diet." - DaveNoisy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This article contains some obvious bullsh!t, for example:
"Smoking: Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. The B6, B12 they contain.."
There is no B12 in bananas, nor just about any other plant food. (I dare say *no* plants..) Take it from a vegan. =)
There might be some accuracy on some of the items, but this is a pretty silly article overall.
I'm sure Helen is a very nice person, but i don't know if i'd believe everything she writes.
http://www.finetuneyou.com/abouthelen.html - cskaterun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would probably check facts on dietary information I got from a spiritual guide and holistic advisor (http://www.finetuneyou.com/)... maybe it's just me though.
- Haapi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1... And can have a positive effect on women even before eating.
- crapiolio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Banana is great for health! Who doesn't know that is an idiot.

the specific link.
if this gets on diggnation, i think it'd be hilarious if alex and kevin did their usual 'oops we did 0 research, fact checking, or preparation for the show' thing they tend to do. I ridicule them for it, but I still love the show. Still, I ain't holdin my breath. - geforceter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bananas are good mkay
- lepton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Goog grief, now I've got that banana song in my head!

- spiderland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't see any references mentioned in this article. It could be only partially true, and you guys are believing (and digging) every word of it.
- TomJ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm sure Helen is a very nice person, but i don't know if i'd believe anything she writes.

- wirjo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Woo! I eat around 3 bananas a day :D
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Do you want to know the real reason people (or bots) keep digging this story... it's because they want Kevin or Alex to say that this story was submitted by MiKeOxLonG (read: no girlfriend and tiny penis).
If that isn't the reason they are digging then they should ask themselves what sound a sheep makes... - fugitivALiEN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that's a whole-lotto diggs... no wonder i still get crap like this sent to me via email... ;)
- rickweasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I always tell my friends a banana is better than an apple. but no one ever listens. Dont get me wrong, I am a lover of all fruts and veggies.
- M-theory, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Paid for by the world banana consortium

- UsernameTaken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Fact checkers we need.
- BrowserBabe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ok....I have come back after doing some research. I'll give you two clues to help you since posting all the research here would take more time than I want to spend on this. (I'm mostly doing this since I promised myself to research it later) Look up the word petai (it is a bean) along with depression, PMS or smoking, etc. Also, check out do a search for bananas on http://www.truthorfiction.com. There is a short article from 10/22/05 about this very e-mail. My more educated opinion about this e-mail or article is some of the statements are true, however bananas definitely do not contain B12 as DaveNoisy pointed out. I hope this helps. I'm still keeping my Digg just because its interesting. : )
- tsangal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That article was completely worthless. No references provided for any of those claims whatsoever.
- Zoasterboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BTW, has anyone read the PopSci article on how bananas are going extinct?
- NeilM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very cool. I shall eat more bananas now.
- Keir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well I have to say, recently I discovered eating a banana with my breakfast helped me to wake up in the mornings (i'm awful in the mornings) and now I guess this helps prove my theory!
Dugg! - StrawberryFrog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Many other cultures see bananas as a "cooling" fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers."
Translation: There's no factual basis to it whatsoever so we'll just call it traditional wisdom not the superstitious rubbish that it is. - jedi0utkast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
"Take your stinking paws off me, you damned dirty ape!"
- Teh_Psyren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My anus is craving for a banana right now.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Am I the only one who already knew all this? hehe
- joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0pgfitzgerald: Bananas, in general, won't disappear, just the one particular variety that we all eat.
- master_of_fm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Bananas are slightly radioactive."
almost everything in the universe is "slightly radioactive" - cool4u2view, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm not sure why this is getting so many diggs...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Did anyone else check out the other foods and health information on this site? I went up a parent, and found this "An abuser is a husband who forces his wife to have sex when she isn't in the mood."
Get real. - TomJ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dugg for title, btw.
- gotpaint547, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0screw DIGGing I'm gonna go make a banana peanut butter sandwich
- TheRealStyro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I try to eat a Banana a day to offset the Potassium loss due to drinking high caffeine sodas.
Now if only I can take the energy generated by these high caffeine sodas and put it towards exercising on all this dusty gym equipment I'd loss some serious weight. -
