- Hortinstein, on 06/29/2009, -2/+41amateur atom bomb builders...no way that could go wrong
- BlackOculus, on 06/29/2009, -2/+31Don't you typically need something to reverse engineer it?
If so I find that statement highly disturbing. - kingmanic, on 06/29/2009, -0/+25The knowledge for an A-bomb is easy to obtain. The entirched isotopes of uranium and plutonium are the expensive and hard parts.
Delivery vehicles as well need 'rocket science' and sophisticated timing but you can make a small nuke with nothing but a big metal tube, a little bit of explosives and two balls of enriched uranium. - omgwtflawl, on 06/29/2009, -3/+27brb FBI.
- ThE0eNiGmA, on 06/29/2009, -0/+16Hes using publicly available data on nuclear weapons (a lot of which he had to ignore because they were deliberately falsified), his own measurements on bomb casings, interviews with people who worked on the bombs (being a trucker gives lots of opportunity to meet in person), and plenty of guesswork.
From what I remember the last time I saw his story, he wasn't trying to build a bomb so much as get the facts straight. He is extremely obsessed with detail. - benderillo, on 06/29/2009, -2/+16 the names Bag, Douche Bag
- slippeh, on 06/29/2009, -3/+15So a truck driver doing something a second year engineering student could do isn't impressive?
I really don't understand the attitude behind smacking down someone's accomplishments because someone somewhere else in the World (sometimes with more education) could do it easier/better. - jwolcott, on 06/29/2009, -2/+12Oh yeah, and a third year engineering student could test the none-pervasiveness of the sub-atomic particles in the weapons-grade isotope of ur anus.
- Mujokan, on 06/29/2009, -1/+8Well, if you ever see an atomic bomb being used to settle community squabbles, be sure to let us know.
- inactive, on 06/29/2009, -0/+6Here's an excellent article on the topic:
http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2008/12/15/0812 ... - KungFooJesus, on 06/29/2009, -12/+18If you know anything about nuclear physics, this is not impressive. a second year engineering student could design one with some ease and could even test its criticality on University computers.
- jurassiqpark, on 06/29/2009, -2/+8i reverse engineer cars to make transformers.
- NinjaBoy, on 06/29/2009, -1/+7Really it all comes down to enriching the uranium with a calutron then combine the two halves of the critical mass together and BOOM There is a great video lecture on all of it available online. "Physics for future presidents" from UC Berkly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ysbZ_j2xi0
- buddamus, on 06/29/2009, -0/+5For some reason the sites not loading the video for me, heres a youtube link for anyone else having the same problem
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xp4KNfBZ3w&eur ... - jjesusfreak01, on 06/29/2009, -1/+6You cant be a professional until you've got it right at least once.
- NinjaBoy, on 06/29/2009, -0/+5Yeah, the hard part is enriching the uranium in MASSIVE factories without getting caught. We have many spy satellites and planes that are designed to detect older model subs by their magnetic field. If you fire up a production sized calutron it would light the whole map up, and then the next day you would be bombed. The only way to really do it stealth style would to be to have many smaller sized factories hidden, but then you limited your output to one nuke every 10 or so years as long as no UN inspectors found it. If they did you'd be back to the bombing stages again.
- dumptaker, on 06/29/2009, -0/+4Is that why it takes so effing long to build the nukes in Starcraft?
- kingmanic, on 06/29/2009, -0/+4'only applies to implosion type bombs.'
yeah thats true. Gun bombs just need to accelerate two globes of uranium at each other but the yield is much lower. - zbeast, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3Now all your missing now is uranium, a reactor, and a gas diffusion plant.
- Chris_F, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3WTF are you talking about? Seriously? Nuclear IED? Do you know nothing?
You could probably order plans for a nuclear warhead out of the back of an electronics magazine along with a pair of x-ray goggles.
He's recreating the specifications for 2 outdated historical weapons. It would be like reconstructing a historically accurate Trojan horse. Modern day nuclear weapons are obviously much more advanced and many times more powerful and information on their construction is no secret. Anybody could construct a nuclear bomb, it's the little part about obtaining several pounds of fissionable material that makes it impossible for any organization other than powerful governments with access to things like uranium mines and nuclear reactors. - ddawggin, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3Apparently so. I stand corrected.
- fwertz, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3Better charge your batteries you ***** power tool.
- Chris_F, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3Anyone with an internet connection or attended any level of science in school knows how to make IEDs.
If your neighbors are settling disputes with nuclear warheads, it's time to ***** move away. - arunforce, on 06/29/2009, -1/+4I didn't know that Japan actually had a nuclear stockpile, I was under the impression that their constitution forbid them. Damn, everyone is going nuclear these days. And not the clean nuclear. >_>
- adavis99, on 06/29/2009, -3/+5ABombs aint KFC. It's not about the secret recipe, it's about creating/stealing/buying the ingredients.
That's why we don't like crazy mofos like Iran building nuclear power plants, that paves the way to the ingredients... - egofreak, on 06/29/2009, -2/+4I almost watched the vid but that stupid commercial about that unbelievably ***** car pissed me off after the 3rd time it played.
- jrm125, on 06/29/2009, -1/+3Is his name Paul Stevens?
*Internets to those who get the reference* - StanDevia, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2In defence of John Coster-Mullen, long periods behind the wheel of a truck *can* sap your precious bodily fluids.
- jasdf, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2The timing is the hard part...or so I hear. But maybe that only applies to implosion type bombs.
- Mujokan, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2Saudi Arabia?
- Gareth321, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2Yes, dumptaker. That game is all about the realism.
- inactive, on 06/29/2009, -1/+3It is where I live. There is a lot of violence here, but most violence is done on behalf of a community rather than individual squabbles. Many here own and know how to make IEDs, but they are not used as often as in Iraq and Afghanistan where Americans are posted. We have them "just in case".
- jonglebeats, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2I looked up his name to make that comment, should have known it was already said.
- slippeh, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2You're right. This guy deserves absolutely no praise whatsoever. How blind of me
/s - Zortrium, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2If it makes you feel better, his body was vaporized, so there's no chance of him coming back as a zombie.
- tretneo, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2Good movie, It's a good thing no teenagers have actually been able to pull that one off yet
- bratterscain, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2I can give you what...you...want!
- bratterscain, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2This is why we can't have nice things.
- jfsimard79, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2Trust me, that's not your typical "truck driver."
- RedSaint, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2You just have to seek around a little on the timeline to get it started. It also stopped several times during the video almost as if there were commercials - so maybe it's an adblock thing?
- eanbowman, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2There are truck drivers who are members of MENSA supposedly.
I guess they just like their job? - eanbowman, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1I always thought the design they talked about of big boy and little boy employed a globe with primary charges inserted in the outer layer of the globe which lit a secondary charge surrounding the uranium in the middle which crushed it and caused the reaction.
Where the hell did I get that info from?
D: - gregdbowen, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1ok, everybody put on your ski goggles. Were almost ready for burning man!
- Theycallmetak, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1All you need is an RC car, some wire cutters, and a couple frisbees.
- nevaseez, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1i RE god, i can make anything!
- inactive, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1Hey, 123, are you extremely interested in science and programming? If so, please jump in front of a bus soon. I shouldn't let you get to me, but you make me sick. Please die soon.
- nextekcarl, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1We've actually lost quite a few over the years. I read a report a few years ago (can't be bothered to find it right now) that listed each one (at least that's been acknowledged publicly) and it really surprised me. I can't recall the exact number, but I think it was more than a dozen.
- trevordj, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1Thank you for posting this link. It was a very long article but I found it to be very stimulating. It reminded me of many different people back home that have these unique talents and similar sensibilities.
- nextekcarl, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1Somebody should tell that to the people who run for President.
- spyderveloce, on 07/12/2009, -0/+1wtf!... and your point is?!?
