- atbnet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21December 21st 2012 is the Mayan creation day and the mark of the next cosmo genesis and not necessararily the end of the world.
- p9s50W5k4GUD2c6, on 10/12/2007, -2/+192006 Headline: "Hurricane first responders cellphones inoperable due to Solarmax Solar Storm:" "Avian Pandemic hits Chicago" (page 2).
It's going to be a wonderful decade! - digiital, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17For us Ham Radio operators its BIG news. We can now talk to the world on a wet noddle! Put away those 2Kw amps and run your radio on D-cells.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Did somebody say "land war in Asia"?
- TheSage, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Even then, that the two events coincide is ominous.
- Inbal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9What the Mayans said will happen in 2012 is that Earth will teleport into the future, which means that we'll skip a few stages in our evolution and become higher, more conscious beings.
- dirtyfratboy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12so those damn scientists and their masters degrees and PhDs just make the world an annoying place for you to live in, huh?
- jasondefaoite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Actually one of the theories on what the Mayan calendar tracked was a long term cycle of the sun of 5000+ years. If true we enter a new cycle on 2012. What that means no one knows... but it ain't sounding too good..
- gsmithEIDW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7`Some people on here are asking how bad this will affect equipment and their day to day lives and some reply with "very bad" or equally unquantified bland replies. But the reality is nobody seems to know, as nothing on this scale happened before with todays amount and type of technology.
It may have some impact, but my guess is most people won't even notice or care. Probably will turn out to be another overhyped event. For example does anybody even remember Y2K bugs now? - boredzo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12'worse'.
- aristotle1990, on 10/12/2007, -5/+112012 Headline: The Mayans Were Right: Solar Storm Brings World To An End
I sure hope not... - emo1313, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12..Its the end of the world as we know it... and I feel fine.
- kwojniak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_storm
- jasongetsdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This has nothing to do with the overall thermal output of the sun. That remains relatively constant. This is electro-magnetic activity. And it would be rather daft to blame global warming on the sun's cycles. Check out the Global Temperatures info here... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Warming. Note the constant climb since the beginning of the industrial revolution. Care to describe how an eleven year cycle could cause that kind of trend?
- m0nk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7This could be a big deal with technology becoming more wireless everyday. This of all the different devices and their connection protocol....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Yeah, many POS situations involve using a satellite uplink for credit card transactions. Some have phone line backup (much slower). The ones that don't have backup are generally out of luck in the event of satellite problems.
- jguerry, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7raining blood, and now this?
DOOMED I SAY!!! DOOMED!!! - MrTea, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8This sounds like an interesting adventure
- ucbrave92, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6if i remember correctly it wasn't just cell phones that were messed up when we had that small one a while back but credit card machines and alot of other electronics were down as well.
- m1th, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6It's like this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/3210901.stm

- Nothlit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Good thing solar activity enhances ham radio.
- jermm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4As long has it doesn't happen during family guy, its ok
- dognose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They can barely predict local weather a few days in advance. How are they predicting the weather on the Sun years from now?
- Dropscience, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3lmao, you said "including your dad" like he is the head of nasa
- Konquest, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It could even knock off GPS navigation... It's really hard on satellites.
http://technology.slashgeo.org/article.pl?sid=06/03/08/1711210&from=rss - endernet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Ya, its hearing stuff like this that lets all know how insignificant we really are.
- noelsusman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_storm#Disrupted_systems
That link has been posted 3 times now. This time I even pointed it to what you need to read. Cell phones aren't the only thing to be affected. A lot of communications systems, navigation systems, satellites, electric power, and many other essential systems of the world will be affected. - Thezeppelin62, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2lol tin foil hats. that would be cool to see one of theese
- RobotCitizen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3We'll have to wrap our satellites in aluminum foil or something. Time to start loading the shuttle with Reynolds Wrap.
- Brak710101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Dates have been found writen by the Mayans 10,000s of years after 2012. Nothing is going to happen.
They are like us, thier' hands hurt after writting calanders that long. Duh. - Reddog_x2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ It could even knock off GPS navigation... It's really hard on satellites.
Is there some reason Sat elites haven't been hardened against this? It's a pretty predictable issue. - isny, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9Can you hear me now? Guess not...
- digiital, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes they are, right now at the bottom of the cycle is SUCKS BIG TIME. You hear the odd transmission from over seas, but it's really crappy. The the top end of the cycle it's not a problem for my on 10m(29Mhz) to talk with Japan with 23watts from my car.
- Inkling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Time for Earth 6.0 (2011 Edition).
- teknotant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If it is as bad as it sounds then new tech will be forced to surface.
[I am a realist with a glimmer of optimism thrown in I guess] - cakefart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If anyone likes tracking this sort of stuff, try NOAA's Space Weather page:
http://www.sec.noaa.gov/SWN/
Usually, you can get a good half-day's warning on storms and upcoming Aurora shows. - pheifdog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2damn we wont be able to blame bush
a sad day it will be. - CatFood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The Sun flare occurs, the particles are ejected. It takes about 2-3 days for them to travel to the earth, so if you see a big flare on the sun chances are there is a storm coming. It's a LOT harder to predict storms on Earth because they change direction and strength. Solar storms just have a lot of space to travel thorugh, but it's mostly straigh line from Sun to Earth.
- ATLBeer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2digital - "For us Ham Radio operators its BIG news. We can now talk to the world on a wet noddle! Put away those 2Kw amps and run your radio on D-cells."
Sorry, I'm a bit ignorant on some radio stuff... Does anyone have a link that can tell more about how thats done? - jnnycakes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Blame Canada!
- jhuebel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just out of curiousity, what effect will solar storms this big have on our atmosphere? Are solar storms a "good thing" for Earth, when you factor out that all the electronics floating around in orbit will be fried?
- crosswick, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I really don't think 'nothing' is going to happen December 21st, 2012. There's a whole lot of astrophysical clues that there will be a rare alignment between Earth, the Sun and the center of the Milky Way galaxy on that date, having all kinds of implications in terms of electromagnetic field dynamics. Tie that in with the proven fact that our consciousness has a lot to do with EM, and you've got a recipe for somekind of interesting transformation.
Here's two interviews on this subject that are very watchable from a digg/tech perspective:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2631635694673927511&q=cruttenden - JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2No... like it'll screw with everything thats magnetic or radio based.
Power Grids, Brain chem, Cell phones, TV Signals, Computers, Credit cards, clocks, Lights, Emergency Responder Radios.
Sometimes these things are needed. - digiital, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amateur_radio
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_propagation - twinklyJesus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The increased EM activity will cause brilliant Aurora events in areas the normally do not experience them, followed by a massive increase in the ozone layer. Such that the ozone hole will very nearly disappear. This will be followed by a massive lay-off in the ranks of doom-sayers who were predicting the end of the world due to the loss of ozone in the upper atmosphere. Many other such shall lose their grants and tenure and be forced to stop slopping at the public trough. At which point open season shall be declared and they shall be run from the face of the earth like lemmings to the sea! (I love it when i wax biblical!)
- bchang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You know how i think of it. It was just like how everyone was scared of a nuclear war in the USSR days and they get by so i belive that every generation has its fears and these are just some of ours.
- nickstr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yes it is in fact I am a licensed amateur radio operator so I would know it could even cause some TV stations to appear on ch 2 through what is known as F2 skip so in 2009 2010 be on the lookout for smeared or ghosty video on channel 2. Sure this might be old news something that has been going on for a long time but it is still of interest to anyone on here who is an amateur radio operator or shortwave listener.
