- bossm4n, on 04/28/2009, -0/+60If you need a crane to help setup your model rocket, you are a badass.
- frequentFlyer, on 04/28/2009, -0/+54Wow - he's doing better than the North Koreans and Iranians combined!

Plenty of other good ones in the related. - bluehouse, on 04/28/2009, -0/+28That's what she said
- BigManOnCampus, on 04/28/2009, -1/+184400 feet :( Somehow I was hoping for more.
- lornefs, on 04/28/2009, -0/+13Well done!
It even landed standing up. - inactive, on 04/28/2009, -0/+12Dogs don't have opposable thumbs..
- BeavisMcSleavis, on 04/28/2009, -4/+15Now that was cool!
Way cooler than the Mythbusters vaporizing a car (which is #1 in 'Related by keyword' below as I type).
Anyone have video??? - dblespresso, on 04/28/2009, -0/+10What about the Top Gear rocket
http://www.autoblog.com/2009/02/10/top-gear-headed ...
Ok maybe its not really amateur, but cool none the less. (just noticed the " recovered successfully." statement) - Nerys, on 04/28/2009, -0/+10I got static tripod video and followed to deployment in 720p but I am afraid of putting my url on here so here are the youtube links :-) hehe

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5d1_vHiCkg - compgeek, on 04/28/2009, -0/+9Holy hot damn. I've been into model rockets since I was 10 years old I've got a 1/10 scale v2 powered with 4 D size motors I thought was badass. I stand so very very corrected. Great work Mr. Eves!
- Tenareth, on 04/28/2009, -1/+10I hope you don't ever get a job if you think he was being an ass... You apparently don't take any pride in your work.
- frequentFlyer, on 04/28/2009, -0/+8Some of those rocket clubs launch stuff to 16,000 ft. You have to remember that it was a big, big ass rocket he was launching.
- dstrizzle69, on 04/28/2009, -2/+10Thats what she said
- bossm4n, on 04/28/2009, -0/+6Huge bonus point not only for bringing it back safely to the ground, but the thing landed standing straight up. I can't tell you how many rockets I shot off as a kid and the stupid chute didn't deploy, sending the rocket, missile at that point, crashing back to earth.
- jasdf, on 04/28/2009, -1/+7I hope you are self employed. The boss is the boss, you do as you are told if you want a pay check.
- Wakkyweed, on 04/28/2009, -1/+7Interesting, but nowhere near as cool as launching your own full-size model of an X-Wing Fighter.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGvMVn38Eu8 - markscott65, on 04/28/2009, -0/+6As a childhood rocket geek myself, that was awesome!
- bklny, on 04/28/2009, -0/+5I wonder if that thing set off alarms at NORAD
- Nerys, on 04/28/2009, -0/+5Nothing more than a Level 3 Cert and an FAA waiver. That's about it.
Oh and GIANT BUCKETS of money :-) $25,000 total cost $13,000 just in motors and motor hardware. - adml_shake, on 04/28/2009, -0/+5don't forget what really happend to that one either....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgF9hBL-CuA - inactive, on 04/28/2009, -1/+5Now that's what I call model rocketry! Little known fact: Robert Goddard (one of the pioneers of rocketry) was from Maryland.
- jasdf, on 04/28/2009, -0/+4That thing sounded awesome!
- Aaronraw, on 04/28/2009, -0/+3Over a certain altitude the FAA will give you "windows" of time where the airspace is clear. But you break that before or after, you get to go to jail.
- MrBlackkcalBrM, on 04/29/2009, -0/+3He should have strapped a cat to it.
- INDOAZZ, on 04/28/2009, -0/+3Just Curious...Does the FAA and the Military need to know about these kind of launches...? Seems like a viable question.
- inactive, on 04/28/2009, -0/+3Bigger rockets can be harder to get up.
- inactive, on 04/28/2009, -2/+5You're a moron, you shouldn't be allowed to reproduce.
- camaroz06, on 04/28/2009, -0/+3Completely awesome, sure it only went 4400 but that damn thing was huge and scale looking to boot.
- inactive, on 04/28/2009, -0/+2Confucius say: Man who looking to boot sees no rocket.
- inactive, on 04/28/2009, -1/+3D12-9 x 1000
- BeavisMcSleavis, on 04/28/2009, -0/+2I don't know why I didn't look up videos before. I thought it was too obscure.
Should have done so before I commented.
Thanks again.
That was intense! - inactive, on 04/28/2009, -0/+2Dr Evil laugh at 1:20.
- Aaronraw, on 04/28/2009, -0/+2If you're in the saltflats on the Utah/Nevada border theres a HUGE rocket launch on 7/30-8/02 called "Hellfire". Its awesome, but super hot. www.uroc.org
- BeavisMcSleavis, on 04/28/2009, -0/+2Nice!
Thanks dude ;} - rmxz, on 04/28/2009, -0/+2@jackdaniels06:
A VW at a half mile would have been cooler. - techmaster, on 04/28/2009, -0/+2Seriously? The biggest amateur rocket ever launched? Even bigger than the one North Korea just launched?
- Nerys, on 04/28/2009, -0/+2The X-Wing was a pity. it it had remained vertical I think it would have held together. It was the turn that did it in. Inertia sucks in this case :-)
The Tie Fighter spoof was done perfectly too! - jgubbe, on 04/29/2009, -0/+2you can make rocket fuel on your stove, with normal ingredients. Salt peter rocket fuel. Also I have made many homemade rockets with just cardboard.
What could be scarier if your built a homemade UAV with camera, gps and controlled by computer. I have seen this on youtube with prentered fight plans and video. Pretty cool till they become armed.
The truth is a trained man with a gun is far more deadly.
And any man with ill intentions could be a terrorist or a person trying to harm or scare others.
So I say first ban Ladybugs. - StripeyMagee, on 04/28/2009, -1/+3I'm wondering what kind of permitting/licensing they need
- Nerys, on 04/28/2009, -0/+2Nasa's problem is that they are massively under funded and far over beuracratized, if that's even a word :-)
People say cut funding from nasa cut there funding its too big not realizing its quite a bit smaller than 1% of the federal budget.
How about cutting some of the rest of the 99.xx percent of the budget.
Hell erase the ATF IRS DOE (education) and the Federal Reserve and we would have oodles of left over money. - asskicker32, on 04/29/2009, -0/+219 seconds from launch to maximum height? Maximum height was 4400 ft?
feet per second = feet/sec = 4400/19 = 231.58fps
158mph - cubicledrone, on 04/28/2009, -0/+2It's nice that some jackass didn't say "that guy has too much time on his hands and needs to get a life." Maybe people are finally realizing that cool happens when people are NOT commuting to twelve hours of Powerpoint six days a week.
- jackdaniels06, on 04/28/2009, -0/+2The 36-ft.-tall rocket was the largest amateur rocket ever launched and recovered successfully—and at 1648 pounds, also the heaviest. Eves' single-stage behemoth was powered by nine motors—eight 13,000 Newton-second N-Class motors and a 77,000 Newton-second P-Class motor. (Five Newton-seconds is equivalent to about a pound of thrust.) All told, the array generated enough force to chuck a Volkswagen more than a half-mile—and sent the Saturn V more than 4440 feet straight up.
http://www.popularmechanics.com/home_journal/works ... - INDOAZZ, on 04/28/2009, -0/+2Nice info thx...
- alpha19, on 04/28/2009, -0/+1Watching this makes me that much more excited to see the shuttle launch in 2 weeks. It's going to ***** rock.
- publiclurker, on 04/28/2009, -3/+4That's what she said.
Sorry, but you know someone had to say it. - samby, on 04/28/2009, -0/+1All told, the array generated enough force to chuck a Volkswagen more than a half-mile—and sent the Saturn V more than 4440 feet straight up.
Obligatory physics correction: Energy is needed to chuck a Volkswagen half a mile - not force. I can generate arbitrary amounts of force with a large enough lever but can't chuck a Volkswagen half a mile. (energy = force applied over distance) - MWeather, on 04/28/2009, -0/+1Or just cut defense spending. Do we really need 11 carrier strike groups?
- MWeather, on 04/28/2009, -0/+1"I can generate arbitrary amounts of force with a large enough lever but can't chuck a Volkswagen half a mile."
Do it all at once and you can. -
