- Matteos, on 02/06/2008, -1/+40"where does new texting lang. fit in?"
It is one of those dead leaves on the ground. - ConanTL, on 02/06/2008, -16/+49I love the language tree because it proves how retarded creationism is. Here's a few creationist arguments applied to the evolution of language:
- If English evolved out of German, how come there are still people speaking German?
- I believe in micro language evolution but not makro language evolution: I believe that English can turn into English with a southern accent, but have you ever seen a native Italian speaker suddenly without any prior knowledge speak French?
- Languages display a perfect design, misspell a word and it's wrong, change the grammar around, it makes no sense. Therefore all languages were designed by a single creator of all languages
- Whoever came up with this diagram recanted on his deathbed.
- (...) - scrappyvintage, on 02/06/2008, -0/+30Mother tongue, you lick us all with your gift of communication. Thank you, you big loveable *****' tree.
- Grambo, on 02/06/2008, -0/+30Anyone know where we could see some other highlighted parts of the bigger tree. It is supposedly from wikipedia but I couldn't find it.
- EdmontonEh, on 02/06/2008, -4/+32Hey where is Newfy? Sorry... Canadian joke... :P
- inactive, on 02/06/2008, -0/+27Yeah we got that thanks.... But still, Portuguese belongs in the romance part of the tree, which is clearly displayed on the left, it should be there with romanian, french, italian and spanish.
- exterminador, on 02/06/2008, -0/+25But it's the language of Brazil, Portugal and a handful of African Countries. In fact, I believe it's the fifth most spoken language in the whole world. I am Portuguese, I hate patriotism and all that crap, but I guess that in scientific terms it would have to be there. If not, what is the reason for including certain branches and not others?

- kakwakas, on 02/07/2008, -0/+23I'd be happy if I could find like a 10000x10000 picture of a forest of language trees I could make into a poster.
- mcool119, on 02/06/2008, -2/+24Leaves.
:P - Klainmeister, on 02/06/2008, -1/+23The different languages of Native Americans, and of just India alone would necessitate an entire forest.
- kiduk, on 02/06/2008, -0/+21In the depths of hell.
- maddh, on 02/06/2008, -1/+22It's sleeping on one of the higher branches.
- shapattack, on 02/06/2008, -0/+20I'd like to see this arranged along a time line, too. Interesting
- fantasticFlan, on 02/06/2008, -0/+18Linguistic evolution vs Babelism, let the debate begin!
- fxbx, on 02/06/2008, -0/+17We define the tree as always having been ours, and we purport that the freedom of linguistics came about only because of what we've done.

- kurejibitch, on 02/06/2008, -5/+22As a linguistics major, OMG I CAME. Well, theoretically, noting my gender. Still, I drool. A lot. ):

- joshuabowers, on 02/07/2008, -0/+15I don't quite catch your gestalt; guess I'm not quite with the zeitgeist. I think I'll go eat a pizza in my canoe while thinking about anime.
- VoiceofPower, on 02/06/2008, -1/+15Strangely, they do recognize Flemish, which is like 98% Dutch.
- fantasticFlan, on 02/06/2008, -0/+14Right, and Portuguese would be over next to Spanish and the other Romance languages on this "branch" of the tree.
- atdigg, on 02/06/2008, -3/+17on one of the leafs...
- wankelrotary, on 02/06/2008, -1/+15In the compost heap behind the tree.
- davidleeroth, on 02/07/2008, -0/+13Here's a good language tree I scanned out of a book once - http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/6827/languages2 ...
- inactive, on 02/06/2008, -1/+14Actually it´s the sixth.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portuguese_language
"Romance language that originated in what is now Galicia (Spain) and northern Portugal from the Latin spoken by romanized Celts about 2000 years ago"
"Ranked sixth according to number of native speakers (over 200 million)"
"official language of nine countries"
It should have its own branch. - ShooterMcGavin, on 02/07/2008, -1/+14White Russian?
The Dude Abides. - jdb762, on 02/07/2008, -0/+13you're confusing language with words - grammatically the language is just germanic.
- Spero, on 02/06/2008, -1/+13That's a whole other tree.
- epmc, on 02/07/2008, -0/+11Newfy is drunk at the pub eating a fried bologna steak.
- Ayb4btu, on 02/07/2008, -0/+11Here's a timeline for English atleast:
http://www.danshort.com/ie/timeline.htm - thetensor, on 02/07/2008, -1/+12No, Finnish is non-Indo-European. Albanian is Indo-European, but it's generally considered a branch within I-E all by itself (depending on who you ask).
- Leviathan88, on 02/06/2008, -3/+14that was lame.
- veggiemoore, on 02/07/2008, -0/+10Yeah, English has a certain je ne sais quoi.
- davidleeroth, on 02/07/2008, -0/+10A ton of English vocabulary is French and Latin, but the structure of English is DEFINITELY Germanic. If you've ever studied German, the similarities are amazing. Finnish is a Finno-Ugric language.... I'm just really interested in this stuff.
- serif69, on 02/07/2008, -1/+10and all of the Proto-Celtic languages.
To know the history of English, you have to know the history of the British Isles and everyone who traded with or invaded them, and decided to stay. It's historically one of the biggest revolving doors in terms of heritage and influence.
Add American English in the mix, and you might as well include every single language from around the world. Hell, we even have common phrases direct from other languages in our lexicon... - Scrappy1850, on 02/07/2008, -4/+13which gender cannot cum?
- DRINKxREDxBULL, on 02/06/2008, -1/+10Then go read a dictionary and get off of digg.
- poihead, on 02/06/2008, -4/+13This is crap... No Portuguese on the romance language branch!! No legit diagram would miss that...
- davidleeroth, on 02/06/2008, -0/+9Well, in German, Russia is "Russland" and Belarus is "Weißrussland" (Weiß = White)
Also, in Russian, the adjective бельий means white... Беларусь or Белоруссия means White Russia as well. - Godlesswanderer, on 02/06/2008, -2/+11I would have thought English would have a few sub-sections leading to it. We speak quite a messed up language.
- DarthBibble, on 02/06/2008, -0/+9Chinese isn't Indo-European
