- inactive, on 05/08/2008, -5/+120The price for intelligence is a lifetime supply of misery, in the form of sitting all day and saying "omg, people are *****".
- o0joshua0o, on 05/08/2008, -2/+95I've noticed that a lot of less intelligent people seem happier in general, as if they're blissfully unaware of how screwed up the world is. And how many intelligent people get suicidally depressed, have anxiety disorders, or other problems? I think intelligence really does have a cost.
- DeskFlyer, on 05/08/2008, -0/+64An optimist is a person who doesn't have all the facts. A pessimist is an optimist who does have all the facts. A cynic is a pessimist who has seen the facts in action. A paranoid is a cynic who has finally realized that the facts are after him.
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?defid=14 ... - inactive, on 05/08/2008, -3/+56I'll be honest, I like having higher intelligence then an animal. The benefits in my opinion far outweigh the downfalls. Besides wouldn't you rather be aware of life and live shorter then be completely ignorant and live longer?
- AThoughtOrTwo, on 05/08/2008, -2/+52No, people are STUPID, easily lead, and most seem not to WANT to think for themselves. To me, they WANT to be stupid. Because it takes like, too much work to be smart.
- jen55, on 05/08/2008, -0/+43although, if you are ignorant does it not follow that you won't have the intelligence to realise it, hence you wouldn't be aware of the downside to it?
- Hangly, on 05/08/2008, -1/+39All true. Being brilliant wears me out and really limits my social circle.
- kurtu5, on 05/08/2008, -0/+32I wanted to add, do you also see alot of confident dopes in management making far more money than your competent ass?
/Bitter - SonOfDisaster, on 05/08/2008, -0/+31Happiness in intelligent people is the rarest thing I know

- decet, on 05/08/2008, -2/+24The cost of intelligence is tremendous - starting with the power hungry brain that consumes more than 25% of the body's energy budget and ending with the misery that we experience when we understand the human condition - but abstract thinking is about the only thing we can do better than other species, and it has allowed us to survive so far. The worst side effect is that a few very intelligent individuals create the tools and methods which are then misappropriated by a crowd of less intelligent ones to dominate their fellow humans. "They might not have invented black powder, but they're shooting at us with it."
- tehWyman, on 08/19/2009, -1/+20I have come to the conclusion throughout high school that I hate most everyone, mostly because I think they're all dumbasses.
- sononame, on 05/08/2008, -1/+20Rita from Idiocracy: You think Einstein walked around thinkin' everyone was a bunch of dumb *****? Now you know why he built that bomb.
- inactive, on 05/08/2008, -2/+17THAN. FFS it's than, not THEN. JESUS I hate how so many people get this wrong. *****.
- Hangly, on 05/08/2008, -1/+16The Bible isn't one book, its over a hundred books written over a span of 2000 years by almost as many authors. It's got some good books, and some incredibly ***** backward books.
I agree with you on one thing though, Leviticus is incredibly lame. I&II Kings are worse.
Anyway, I posted a quote that related to the topic. I'm not trying to baptize you or anything. - fuhlavaflave, on 05/08/2008, -1/+15It seems the "cost of smarts" to you is having to deal with all of us idiots out here. Their are so many of us.
/See what I did there? I hope your pulling you're hair out. - Hangly, on 05/08/2008, -6/+19"For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow."

- grimward, on 05/08/2008, -1/+14The article starts out fine, but then goes out on a limb regarding what animals would do if they had the option, if animals were as intelligent as us, they would be us, thus they would do what we do. The lack of self insight into their own nature that the article author displays leaves me no other choice but to bury it.
- kurtu5, on 05/08/2008, -3/+15Reminds me of the study that incompetent people are the least qualified in the accurate assessment of their actual competency.
Thus you see prima-donnas on American Idol who insist they can sing, when we can obviously tell they are not. Then the shy, mousy black girl gets on and nervously introduces herself, then proceeds to blow our minds with her beautiful singing. - robthom, on 05/08/2008, -0/+11"This suggests that dimmer bulbs burn longer, ..."
And are almost always happier and often more successful due to not having the brain power to contemplate a miserable grinding existence clouded by self doubt, or considering the moral consequences of their daily actions and decisions. In general, for general use during an average existence, all smart and no instinct is about as useless as all instinct and no smarts, probably more so. Thats why I'm an alcoholic. - inactive, on 05/08/2008, -8/+18"Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property."
-- Leviticus 25:44-45
(I'd just like to point out that quoting that bible should be seen as inane)
For more awesome bible quotes, see here http://home.earthlink.net/~owl233/biblequotes.htm - inactive, on 05/08/2008, -8/+18It is sad looking at most people and thinking they are closer to the great apes than they are to yourself. It's a lonely feeling.
- Spuy767, on 05/08/2008, -0/+9I'm stunned at the intellectual inferiority of almost everyone around me, even some who are more monetarily successful than me. People want to be stupid because it's the easier road. Kissing ass is easier than working hard and it doesn't require you to think. Although, being a sycophant will wear through the knees of your trousers once in a while.
- lazybat, on 05/08/2008, -1/+10The poor so called intelligent fruit-flies very likely died of the learning pressures and naturally smart ones just took it easy saying "F*^% these humans"
- MikeSD34, on 05/08/2008, -0/+9So modesty and humbleness are qualities that are only found in clinically depressed people? I can't bring myself to believe that.
- draculthemad, on 05/08/2008, -1/+10Leviticus is like the retarded cousin of the family among the bible.
Ecclesiastes on the other hand, is one of the ones that even non-christians regard as well-done. - kurtu5, on 05/08/2008, -0/+9I am in the last stage. Pray tell me there is another stage.
- dazparkour, on 05/08/2008, -1/+9Well, likely, it is not you.
Also, digg is not the world as large. It is a fallacy to think that because 90% of people are of average intelligence, 90% of diggers are. Strangely enough, being a tech based site, rather than myspace, it is likely higher here than in the general world.
Just like 90% of people at a mensa meeting aren't of average intelligence. - kurtu5, on 05/08/2008, -1/+9But not you. Thanks for digging. There is some hope.
- Hangly, on 05/08/2008, -0/+8Yes, if I were being serious.
- flashback99, on 05/08/2008, -1/+8Because there are more stupid people in the world than their are intelligent people. It's not selecting against it, it's simply outbred.
- akkibaba, on 05/08/2008, -0/+7I'm not spiritual in the least bit, but I walk around in awe of the beauty all around us...from the fractals of a snowflake to the amazing photosynthesis that's going on in the grass I walk on, to the idea that we can measure the chemical composition of stars from right here on the ground.
If you open your eyes to science and engineering, it's a beautiful world. I don't think I'm bitter or arrogant due to my lack of "spirituality". - o0joshua0o, on 05/08/2008, -0/+7No one said it is a direct measure or that there is a causal link. Instead, the implication is that high intelligence might make one more SUSCEPTIBLE to having psychological issues, which seems correct on an intuitive level.

- fokov, on 05/08/2008, -0/+6Sad but true. Especially the last quote. Just think of Einstein. Now think of his feelings if he could see us allow someone like GWB in charge of a thousands of bombs. Actually, you can replace that name with anyone. Scary thought to say someone can just execute generations worth of people with the push of a button.
- Jwoey, on 05/08/2008, -0/+6its HARE you moron! I'm pulling my HARE out... of my top hat.
- dvdcpu, on 05/08/2008, -1/+7It makes you dumb enough to believe an IQ is a good measure of how intelligent you are. The term IQ and how it's used is ironic.

- Trebis, on 05/08/2008, -1/+7Wait, animals doing experiments on US?! Douglas Adams WAS right!!
- Stevethegreat, on 05/08/2008, -3/+9People are not stupid, at least not more than you are, they see the things that most of you see, while -at the same time- you are not as much of geniuses as you may think (well, some -few- of you may be so but still the number is really low actually).
When I was in my teens I was trying to find out why I hate people so much. As I was growing older having conversations with many of the people I considered stupid and depressing I found quite the opposite in many of the cases, they were far more intelligent that the simpletons I though they were and they were even living uplifting (even by my own standards) lives.
Thus I came to the conclusion that what the world, society, lacks is not intelligence but wisdom i.e. the best possible way to USE intelligence. I also came to the conclusion that that's what education is for (to make people more open-minded) but fails miserably to do so. I am convinced now that a small adjudgment in the education system which would move from dry knowledge to methods of critical thinking and modes of thought in general, would lead to a lot more "enlightened" populace which would be a lot less annoying to the rest of us who happened to become "enlightened" IN SPITE OF our education (which -in fact- teaches submission, rather than challenging thought).
I think the solution is really simple -really- and that is to go AGAINST the ways that we're being made (following rather than leading, conforming, being afraid to have unique ideas on matters, being tolerant to paranoiac ideas only to avoid conflict, etc) which can be done ONLY through education (as it goes against the core of our primordial ethos). - Jan33, on 05/08/2008, -0/+6"The things you look at change when you change the way you look at things." -Max Planck

- flashback99, on 05/08/2008, -0/+5Finding out who is intellligent and who is dumb is easy. If their opinion is based on verified facts and reason and logic, they are intelligent. If your opinions are based simply on your opinions and your own psychology, you are a dumbass.
