- peerk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have been freezing bananas and stockpiling them in my basement for the past 8 months.
In the year 2013 I will sell them all and become a billionare. Then I will buy digg.com and allow only stories about how great I am, becoming the most loved man on the planet. - ziggystardust, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Their next article will be how monkeys will go extinct because there will be no bananas.
No digg for the dupe. - temmons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Money alone can't stop a disease. Everyone ate the Big Mike and it went extinct.
- khigy777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought this article was the poo, man. Who knew, man, who knew. I was changed, that's all I gotta say. Sweet digg.
- aggies11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The answer to the problem is _obvious_
Cross breed the Bananna with the Spider-Goat™ !
The resulting Super Bananna will be invulnerable (although probably a bit hard to peel...)

That's how we save the banana. - bobetr, on 11/27/2008, -0/+0good, but old story
- binarypower, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I never cry "dupe!" but this happens to be the search term I used to find Digg.com a while back.
- Barovelli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like bananas because they have no bones . .
- idiggurls, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This ***** is bananas! B-A-N-A-N-A-S. (4x)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love when people all others dumbasses when they are the ones that dont have a clue. Where is darwin when we need him?
SEEDS ARE THE PROBLEM or rather the lack there of.. sure you can clone.. you know if you clone a guy with a genetic disposition to cancer.. guess what you get another guy with the same problem.
this is actually a very old story and bothers me alot...They leave out alot of good points too, like how right now 50% of the bannas crop is lost each year to this blight. none of you are old enough to know the "good" bananas.. maybe the guy above hates bananas as he never had the "big mike". we do desperately need a variety with hybrid vigour. THE ONLY MAYBE of the article is the guys racing to find a viable seed with a good plant.. what did he say 1 in 10,000 with several months between time that he can harvest? the only other maybe is through genetic engineering using genes of other plants?
Basically the maybe is definately unless we get off our asses and do something and thank GOD the ney sayers in here arent the ones trying to save it. - Jon2x4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow that sucks. Now I'm going to try out a "Is there anymore bananas left?" in the Cumberland Farms store.lol
- Dgen_X, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0bananna you buy at grocery store is only around because of genetic engeneering...and tastes MUCH worse than the original bananna...
thank god for those who play god! - TheStooge1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Since banannas are known to give people gas, and in a recent DIGG article we read that we are causing global warming partly due to methane, shouldn't we just let these slippery things go the way of the passanger pigeon thus saving our planet?
FOR THE LOVE OF PETE, SAVE A GLACIER, KILL THE BANANNA! - temmons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah they aren't going to kill their crops, the fungus is.
- wastern, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that doesn't even make sense........there are farms for the things, they aren't going to all kill off their crops
- csansbury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0refuted on 2003
- infra172, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bananas will never go extinct as long as people eat them. God bless capitalism!
- blizzof_oz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No not my nanners!
- foshizol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What will Sarah do now?
- thefist_of_funk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They will find to fix this problem im sure. If not.... JESUS CHRIST!
- V-Spec, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0old news

anyway in this day and age, someone will genetically engineer them and fix the problem
+ i like bannanas - jamester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I did not rtfa. But I did read the comments.
That said, maybe this is an opportunity for science to step in and invent, using gene splicing or whatever the hell it is they do, a more flavor-concentrated, LOWER SUGAR banana. C'mon science, I know you can do it!
I don't eat much in the way of fruits or vegetables, but I WILL eat bananas. Please, science, don't let the damned things die. - outerspaceapple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol, he said banana apocolypse.
- ksgant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought all Popular Science writes about is "The New US Stealth Bomber Fighter Jet" or "UFO Technology in the Hair Salon Business" or has plans to build your own hovercraft out of lawnmower parts.
- schlechtj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seeds ARE the reason it is going extinct. Not directly of course. The problem is that the banana does not reproduce sexually, all Cavendish bananas are clones. That means that when there is one disease or pest that destroys one banana, it has the capacity to kill them all because there is no diversity in the gene pool to evade that threat. Planting a limb or what not is the same thing because it is genetically identical to the original plant.
- 5blocksfree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This bites. Bananas are not only healthy, they are much cheaper than most other fruits. I'm going to be mad if this happens.
- awizzle22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow how many times has this been posted on digg I had it on my blog about 2 months ago and this is old news i cant believe so many people dugg it but an interesting story either way
- Stopher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"there are other methods like rooting a branch and whatnot"
Rooting a branch is essentially a clone and leads to lack of genitic diversity and in this case possible extinction. - CaptSnuffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I have been freezing bananas and stockpiling them in my basement for the past 8 months.

Best comment ever? - sbyllek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Long but interesting article. I had no idea the banana had so much history!
- solidus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0peerk wanna marry me?
- SLoTH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why Can't Cherries be going extinct!!!!
- CompIsMyRx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Wow, 350 varieties of bananas. I've only ever had the Cavandish. Hopefully they will make a hybrid, not just a mutant Cavandish. A new banana flavor would be nice.
- modpancake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Very interesting article... I hope it makes it to Diggnation.
- hoowahman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0noo! i love bananas i try to eat one a day in various forms..blended..chopped or whole :(~
- KriLL3.2™, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I want blue bananas that tastes chocolate. :p
- punch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0yea, 5 pages on the possiblity of one type of banana going extinct
woooo - CaptSnuffy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i like bananas...
i betetr eat as many as i can before they go extinct!
p.s. come mister tallyman, tally me banana - dogbyte_13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0yes we have no bananas, we have no bananas today!!!
- TetrisKid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0None of this is correct. If you ever travel to Asia you'll see that there are dozens of different banana species that we never receive in the states. I wish we did though cause most of them are better.
- Incognito5000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Banana's give me heart burn but I'm not gonna just banish the whole species over that (and they taste sooo good).
- j.carcinogen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0www.banana.com
No its not a porn site. - kevthecatslayer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Good riddance bananas!
I'm allergic :( - TVarmy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Someone save a culture! Then go back in time and save a culture of the Gros Michael banana! It sounds good!
- bacon_skoda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0this is certainly old. I remember reading it here I think.
But the article says alot about society also. The whole world is eating the same one banana. For more than 50 freaking years. Without taking any steps to search for or breed a better banana until now. Sort of like some operating system. so if something kills this one type of banana, everyone will have zero bananas. This is what happens when society depends on ONE system and doesn't know it. Imagine if the world only knows one OS, car, cellphone provider, etc. One attack, if it cannot be rememdied, will kill all.
I heard all the seedless grape came from this one plant in Europe. - jervana, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i like banananannnanananannns.
- hater2win, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I really don't think Bananas are the world's favorite fruit. I prefer oranges. But bananas are k00.
- temmons, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0But it is the variety that we know and eat that is going extinct, the other types are supposed to be less tasty. Also, they say it could easily spread to the other species.
