We're talking about a guy with a very high IQ and a propensity for mathematics/quantitative comparisons. Still, there are several shortcuts that allow for quick mental calculation.
Easy example: 55 squared... 50 x 60 + (5^2) = 3025.
Another one: 43 squared... 40 x 46 + (3^2) = 1849.
Final one: 76 squared... 72 x 80 + (4^2) = 5776.
It's just a matter of simplifying the calculations. No doubt this guy has quite a few memorized as well by now... which speeds up his calculations considerably.
