- SillyRabbits, on 10/12/2007, -4/+79Yeah, because men never take part in raising the kids....is that what you're trying to say? Or is it that when women are doing it, it's work, and when men are doing it, it's relaxation?
- glmory, on 10/12/2007, -3/+69This is crazy talk. There is no reason they can't wear shoes.
- masterskill, on 10/12/2007, -2/+67Take THAT every female comedian ever!
- bsmeteronhigh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+66As a single dad, I get up and fix breakfast and lunch, do a load of laundry, drive my son to school, hit the office, pick him up at 2:30, fix him a snack, get back to work, go grocery shopping, fix dinner, help with homework, empty the dishwasher, load the dishwasher, fold laundry and get him to bed. When I was married, his mom played video games, ordered frozen food from a truck and telephoned me at the office to remind me that they were hungry and dinner needed to be fixed. My eldest son didn't even realize that women were traditionally the person who fixed meals in a family. Oh, and I run a business, too. So, you can take your women work harder stuff and, well....stuff it.
- Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+65It's the sitcoms dissing men that gets me. Guys aren't all predictable idiotic territorial selfish doofuses who need to constantly be looked after by their wives! I can't remember the last time there was a smart guy on a sitcom who wasn't lazy and constantly being shown up by women. Maybe that's why I tend to strongly dislike sitcoms. Note to networks: Men (do not equal) Homer Simpson.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+56It may not be true for all men.
But me and my wife work just as hard.
She works incredibly hard cooking and cleaning when she's at home.
I work incredibly hard at leveling her World of Warcraft character to 70.
She's got it good, I tell ya. - offwithyourtv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+44As a woman I can totally believe this is accurate. It probably is about equal in most cases. Women who work similar hours as men tend to not have or want children, or have kids who are older or no longer live at home, therefore have less homework or split it with their husband. Those who work fewer hours outside the home may have to go home to take care of kids, but most kids entertain themselves for the most part unless they're very young. The only time I'd say a woman may potentially do more work than a man is when they have newborn babies, and some men out there have proven themselves quite capable of taking on that sort of care as well. Thanks to dishwashers and washing machines, housework isn't much to complain about. And hell, I actually like to cook, so I personally wouldn't complain about that either. I'm tired of bitchy women making those of us who are sane look bad. They're just fishing for excuses to spend their man's money on 200 ugly pairs of overpriced shoes.
- Daunting, on 10/12/2007, -3/+42It's hard work forcing my girlfriend to get me a beer.
- evodevo1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+39There might be SOME truth to all the sexual stereotypes, but this study just validates my suspicion that in this day and age, men are working hard as ever to rid themselves of all those stereotypes. Not only do we spend long hours at work, now we go home and share in all the responsibilities of raising children, doing housework, etc. I just hope those feminists would start appreciating men and recognize what we put into the relationship!
- MrSteamTank, on 10/12/2007, -8/+41Who invented most of the devices we use now? Men.
Who built all the roads and houses we live in now? Men.
Who consists of the vast majority of fatalities on the work site? Men.
Who works almost exclusively in the generally considered "worst" jobs in the world? Men.
Who are the most likely to suck up life's woes and "take it like a man"? Men.
It's quite obvious civilization got here because of the hard work of men. Women naturally helped because women are the motivator's to get the men out their and doing their thing.
Only today do we see people actually believing women work harder than men. It's easy to believe that if you count easy no brainer work. Is house wor worth the same as working doing construction? Is being a secretary worth the same as being a garbage man?
Think about that next time you here these crazy statistics claiming women get paid less or women working more than men. It's only true if you disregard obvious factors such as the previous ones mentioned above.
It's a shame that we live in a society were women = victim & men = who cares. - natmaster, on 10/12/2007, -4/+36Oprah's an ignorant loudmouth anyway
- InfinitySnatch, on 10/12/2007, -5/+34Who controls the British crown?
Who keeps the metric system down?
We do! We do.
Who leaves the Atlantis off the maps?
Who keeps the Martians under wraps?
We do! We do.
Who holds back the electric car?
Who makes Steve Guttenberg a star?
We do! We do.
Who robs cave fish of their sight?
Who rigs every Oscar night?
We do! We do. - Rikushix, on 10/12/2007, -5/+33Yes there is, they shouldn't dirty up the kitchen floors with their shoes.
- SillyRabbits, on 10/12/2007, -4/+31Where is this job where I only have to spend 5.2 hours a day at the office?
- gmprunner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24Darn, I was hoping the Mythbusters would have taken care of this one.
I don't know what I just said either. - offwithyourtv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22@blizzardman
I appreciate the offer, but my fiance beat you to it.
@encognito
Seriously. I wish everyone, men and women, would quit playing stupid games in relationships. It's unhealthy and annoying. - Blizzardman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21Will you marry me?
- encognito, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18"They're just fishing for excuses to spend their man's money on 200 ugly pairs of overpriced shoes."
Or trying to shame, punk or guilt a guy into feeling sorry for them over time so when they screw up or want to go on a vacation or whatever they can pull that emotional lever and make the average man dance like a rag doll. Hell, most men don't see the game until the ball hits them in the face. - Gizza, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18The thing I don't get is what are these women doing that require 4.5 hours a day of housework? Unless you have children under the age of 5, because after that they're at school all day. Thorough cleaning of the house probably only needs to be done once a week if that. About 10 years ago my Mum actually took on a casual job because she was bored ***** being home all day.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I would like to state I have contributed absolutely nothing to this achievement. So congrats my fellow men on raising all of our status to exponential heights.
- GhostToon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16That's all nice and dandy but I don't think I would try to tell that to a women.
"Honey stop you bitching about the dishes I work just as hard as you....stop looking at me like that I read it on the Internet!"
That's just begging for the back aches from a nite on couch. - InfinitySnatch, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15But who will buy them these shoes?
- Rikushix, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17No kidding. A bit biased there, buddy.
- ts8lemonade, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11And just think in about 1000 years she'll have her own religion: Oprahism.
- CobolNoFun, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13now we just need one that proves we don't cheat more then woman, and i will be justified to do my life long dream.
Punch Rosie O'Donnell in the face. - oesj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11@mrsteamtank
i agree with most of what you are saying but historically it was frowned upon for women to work and generally contribute to society outside of their own home. its not really surprising that there are fewer inventions/discoveries made by women. - consonance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10...screaming, "THIS. IS. SPARTAAAA."
- MrSteamTank, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12@gennipher
Why do you resort to personal attacks?
Anyways on to the actual topic.
The jobs I mentioned are jobs that pay moderately well because they are unpleasant. These jobs may not be that mentally demanding but they are very physically demanding. A secretary in an air conditioned office does not deserve the same pay as a garbage collector. Women refuse to take these jobs and men only do them because of the high pay. If a secretary and a garbage collector had the same pay we would either have a shortage of garbage collectors or a surplus of people wanting to be secretaries.
And if you really wanted to know what I do. I'm 23, I've done 3 years of animation and have just finished my first year in game programming. Currently, I'm working at a call center as customer service part time while I go to school.
At the call center I work at approximately 2/3 of all employees are women. Do I deserve the same pay as a construction worker? No way! A monkey with a type-writer could do my job yet yet a lot of these "which gender works/gets paid/etc more?" comparisons conveniantly "forget" to factor that in.
And just so you know construction can require a lot of skill and brain power. There is a reason experienced construction workers make a killing and are always in demand. Houses and buildings that meet city requirements are not easy to build. - kitwaites, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15...and buy a woman one pair of shoes and she wants the whole bloody shop.
- schlurp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11"The thing I don't get is what are these women doing that require 4.5 hours a day of housework? "
Yeah, seriously - I live alone and I do perhaps 10min a day of housework. I'd really like to see that itemized to see what they are actually doing. Same with th 2.7h of housework guys are doing. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+21yeah ***** Oprah!
most feminist women are ugly
i rest my case. - varunb007, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11No matter what statistics say, the women's rights lobbyists aren't gonna let up and it will continue to be socially unacceptable for men to ever complain that they work as hard as women.
- discochew, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12... they just whine louder.
WHO'S GOT ME UP TOP, HUH? - Blizzardman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Because EVERYONE knows that working at home with no boss is comparable to being whipped by a boss for 9 straight hours....
/sarcasm - nixonrichard, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Almost all the guys I know do most of the cooking in the relationship. It's not really that the guys are more sensitive or have more respect for women, they just want HER to provide dessert *winky-face*
- florin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9This is the first time I'm hearing about the myth that women work harder than men. If anything, I suspected the opposite to be true, by a slim margin.
- subsonik, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9A lovely run, fellows! A lovely run!
- brufleth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I hate television. When I lived alone I didn't have cable and loved it. Most TV seems to target women. It is all reality, designer, model, drama crap. When I watch it with my fiancee I can only take it in small doses.
- InfinitySnatch, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14Jeanine Garofalo can go sit on a spike.
- kaelyiesta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Hypothesis about the seemingly large numbers for at home work: I bet each are counting things that they like to do as at home work. The guys are counting things like fixing their cars or perhaps computer maintanance and women are counting things like shopping for kids clothing or redecorating(couldnt really think of something realistic for the ladies but you get the idea).
- brenbart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I think it's interesting that most people commenting went the route of easier vs harder work when the article was about the number of hours.
I suspect the idea that women work longer hours than men comes from the fact that attitudes change at a slower pace than activities do. My wife and I balance the workload pretty evenly between chores and work but even so she will read a book like "The Second Shift" and get all pissy even though it is probably more representative of her mother's life than of her own.
Another aspect to consider is what men and women consider to be work and what they consider to be leisure. My wife likes clothing (picking, shopping, sorting, etc.) but she doesn't consider all aspects of clothing to be pleasurable. When we are getting ready for a trip she packs all the kids clothes. Why? I picking my own clothing and despise picking anyone else's outfit and she knows that if she doesn't do it then I'll do a piss-poor job of it. At the same time I hate the way she cooks. She is a good cook but somehow manages to absolutely destroy the kitchen in the process. I like to cook so I do it a lot. (It's still work even if I like it!!!!)
In general, I think comparing what a man does working out of the home (me) vs a stay-at-home mom does at home (my wife) is comparing apples and oranges. We each do the job that we do because our temperaments are best suited to that job and because it's the most fiscally efficient way to get it done. I'm a man in a white collar profession so generally speaking I'll make more out of the home than she will. (I'm a DBA, she's a psychologist.) She has more self discipline than I do so she's better at structuring her day efficiently without needing the crutch of an office and regular work hours.
It has always annoyed me that people are always trying to make men and women the same. We're different and the real trick is to make the differences work for you. - garths, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@gennipher
Garbageman may be brainless work, but it is also one of the most dangerous jobs out there. Plenty of guys falling off trucks, getting jabbed with things people put in the cans, and getting arms caught in the machinery.
Yes, construction is dangerous too (dominated by men)
As is logging (dominated by men)
As is fishing (dominated by men)
If you ask somebody working at one of these professions why they do it, the answer will invariably be "for the money." They aren't doing because it is easy and fun. - petroK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7hehe. as a full-time employee, full-time father/husband, and part time student, I can almost guarantee I work harder than my wife who works outside the home part time and is a full-time mother/wife.
but I'd never tell her that because then she'd pull "fine I just won't do any work around the house, and see how much work you do then" thing.and I'd have to do that much more. - gmprunner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7"Men spend almost all of this additional leisure time watching television."
'Atta boy! - kaelyiesta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7new borns are the size of watermelons? When did this happen?!
- encognito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I don't know about you guys but I am trying to work LESS and make MORE money. If women want to play the martyr role in order to be acknowledged as the harder working gender, I say "Knock yourself out, hon! And you missed a spot right over there."
- cliffzdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Its all relative, nothing is really as it seems to the other person. Take my wife and I for instance, we live the old fashioned "leave it to beaver" stereotypical man works makes money, wife raises kids and takes care of home lifestyle. My wife gets up early with the kids, that's a pain. Then I stay late to work and make money, that's a pain. To me it seems from the outside she has an easy day, but long. To her it seems I have a "shorter" day, but packed with exciting work stuff. In all reality, her day drags on with little chance for a break, while my day although often more "condensed", is a pressure cooker of balls to the wall stress. Sure my day was officially shorter, but while I was churning up an additional 5 quarts of stomach acid she was walking through the local zoo with the kids.
Fact is we know that although we don't split any chore 50-50, we're still putting forth a good 50-50 effort into our relationship and our marriage. - Bleeblaow, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10@trnscndr

go ahead and read up on men vs women cheating.
Just so you know I googled the following phrase:
who cheats more men or women?
so I wasn't simply narrowing down specific searches and the second link is the very first article that showed up with that search.
http://www.womenlifestyle.com/entry/women-cheat-more-than-men-study/
http://magazines.ivillage.com/cosmopolitan/men/menu/articles/0,,426370_525871,00.html
Still though, I probably think it's sensational reporting to be honest and just like men and women working it's probably somewhere close to equal for both.
I hate all this victim status garbage where one race, gender, etc has it harder than someone else. It sucks for everyone but in the western world for the most part all that matters is the money. You can be every colour under the sun or any gender and all that really matters is whether you have money. And guess what? Being poor is a universal trait that the vast majority of the population shares. - HigherLogic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Summary: men and women work equal load amounts, but men spend more of that time at the office, while women spend more of it at home.
"[M]en average 5.2 hours of market work a day and 2.7 hours of homework each day, while women average 3.4 hours of market work and 4.5 hours of homework per day. Adding these up, men work an average of 7.9 hours per day, while women work an average of—drum roll, please—7.9 hours per day." -
