- DrDragun, on 06/26/2009, -3/+59The accent still makes me feel inferior.
- anexanhume, on 06/26/2009, -0/+42In America, we count down from 3.
- jba68, on 06/26/2009, -2/+37Jeez who cares. Lets just have a beer and call it even. Its Friday for *****'s Sake.
- IamNOTmrT, on 06/26/2009, -3/+30Let the trans-atlantic flaming war resume in 5 ... 4 .....3 .....
- inactive, on 06/26/2009, -0/+21I agree.
*brings a keg*
A toast to the old people of both the US and UK. In the end, they all get Alzheimer's or go senile anyway. - inactive, on 06/26/2009, -3/+17We save on ink from not having to write or print out extra useless letters in our words.
- alasdairmacl, on 06/26/2009, -3/+16The English invented you!
- mjk340, on 06/26/2009, -4/+17These comments suck.
- kevdotbadger, on 06/26/2009, -9/+21...yet they still can't spell "colour".
- akaakc, on 06/26/2009, -0/+12I believe the article was referring to seniors...as in *senior citizens*. Not high school seniors. Thank you for giving that much more credibility to the article.
- mparker21311, on 06/26/2009, -3/+15No surprise here, when you have to remain employed due to the lack of health care... you have to keep your wits to survive.
- Googled, on 06/26/2009, -0/+11I logged in just to lol.
-English Guy - IamNOTmrT, on 06/26/2009, -0/+11Yeah, but at least we know the difference between your and you're
- Tanktunker, on 06/26/2009, -2/+13The reply button is just under those colourful thumbs.
- whiledo, on 06/26/2009, -0/+10Because the smart ones realize that they have precious few years left and it would be a waste to spend them being a politician.
- wtrwlkr, on 06/26/2009, -0/+10Work smarter, not harder.
- buckyballs, on 06/26/2009, -1/+9We invented the telephone, the World Wide Web, the train, the jet engine, the electric motor, the computer, radar, and we kick started the industrial revolution.
Your move. - CasinoJack, on 06/26/2009, -0/+8Your grammar isn't helping our case.
- hauntedchippy, on 06/26/2009, -1/+8But what about my precious stereotypes!?
- Googled, on 06/26/2009, -0/+7Too true.
*toasts* :)
-English Guy - SamSlater, on 06/27/2009, -0/+6I could have told the researchers the reasons for the difference and they could have saved money.
We Brits just drink more! By the time we get to 75 our brains are screwed. By English standards I'm not a big drinker but when I've been in LA, Vegas and through towns in Arizona all the Americans are shocked at the alcohol I consume. Most Brits in the USA would be classed as alcoholics.
Maybe we can/should take a leaf out of our cousins' book and lighten up on the beer. - buckyballs, on 06/26/2009, -1/+7We gave birth to Alexander Graham Bell, James Watt, George Stephenson, Tim Berners Lee, Crick and Watson (discoverers of DNA), Sir Humphrey Davy, and John Logie Baird.
There's a reason that 7 of the 10 current F1 teams are based in the UK. We have the engineers. It's what the British do. - pw378, on 06/26/2009, -1/+7uh, and they kicked us around a few times too... 1812 wasn't exactly a banner year for Washington D.C.
- Number23, on 06/26/2009, -3/+9Add some Crest Whitestrips to that list.
- inactive, on 06/26/2009, -0/+6It's a magic keg, dispensing any beer you like in unlimited quantity.
- Nossie, on 06/26/2009, -1/+6you just answered your own question dickwad...
up yir sporran! - Crazysticks, on 06/26/2009, -0/+5I didn't say correlation = causation. All i'm saying is I am forward thinking. Seniors cognitive abilities are a good look into our past but the statistics don't do much for our future like the statistics coming out of europe. Also, you are either a troll, or not really understanding what I am trying to say. I'm not pig headed in the least, I understand fully that there are many factors that go into societies statistical demographics. I'm not a pick-and-chooser, I just have limited time and space and patients to help you understand my viewpoint.
- evilesttoast, on 06/26/2009, -0/+5We beat you twice in two wars before we became BFFs.
- sb66, on 06/26/2009, -1/+6you elected Bush twice. Nuff said.
- wtrwlkr, on 06/26/2009, -0/+4Yes, but can the average Cambridge applicant spell "regardless"?
- RickS2, on 06/26/2009, -0/+4http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Cambrid ...
- Nekogao, on 06/26/2009, -0/+4Budweiser? Call that beer? Pffff...
A nice warm pint of ale'll do me anytime...err...guv. - BurgGuy, on 06/26/2009, -0/+4"It doesnt matter if the US is smarter, we do pretty well concidering theres only around 60m people in this country, against 260m odd people in the US."
Not to forget Doesn't and Considering. OTOH , not all 260M Americans are ODD, most prefer to be thought of as individualistic or free spirited. - Crazysticks, on 06/26/2009, -1/+5Well of course my comment was a little short but you can't deny that Denmark and Sweden have a superior Human Development Index than the united states. Organic Atheism runs rampant in Europe and higher intelligence always goes hand in hand. We are neck and neck with Turkey behind 35 other countries for acceptance of evolution. I can't find the article for this next statement, but it should be obvious. There is a positive correlation between 'percentage of non religious students' and how many years they are into their college career.
- wtrwlkr, on 06/26/2009, -0/+4(coming from an American) psssttt! You forgot Charles Darwin. Just thought I'd let you know. I'll return to my side of the flame war now.
- inactive, on 06/26/2009, -0/+3"Empty the rubbish into the dustbin for you again, Guvnah?
- Renian, on 06/26/2009, -0/+3Touché.
- silverchrysalis, on 06/26/2009, -1/+4that's American efficiency for you!
- demooo, on 06/26/2009, -2/+5We gave birth to Thomas Edison and Benjamin Franklin. We housed Nikola Tesla (he became an American citizen) and Albert Einstein.
- planetexpress, on 06/26/2009, -1/+4Using Wiki to get a main list of the scientists in the Manhattan Project we've got 3x US, 2x Hungary, 2x Italian, 2x German and Shanghai thrown into the mix. Many fled the Nazis to the US, so not really down to your education system.
Landing on the moon was largely based on German rocket technology, along with many other nationalities.
And along with the World Wide Web (as mentioned above), we also invented the Computer.
Granted, the US did a huge amount to a lot of work, huge chunks of your US achievements were from foreign nationals, nothing to do with your education system! - atgmac, on 06/26/2009, -0/+3It's different.
- IamNOTmrT, on 06/26/2009, -0/+3Don't worry, everyone under the age of 65 is still fair game!
- pw378, on 06/26/2009, -5/+8Nationalized healthcare FTL!
- x986123, on 06/26/2009, -1/+3We both speak english. Settled.
- pw378, on 06/26/2009, -0/+2nationalized dental care?
- crunchyeyeball, on 06/26/2009, -1/+3Well, overall average intelligence comparisons put the UK slightly higher than the US, but both are well behind the likes of Hong Kong, South Korea, and Japan:
(Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_ ... )
...and WTF is up with Equatorial Guinea and Ethiopa (average IQ of 59 and 63) - I thought anything below about 70 counted as mental retardation? - bobzibub, on 06/26/2009, -0/+2In a way. Elderly Americans are keeping on their game by working for health care in CostCo.
- kitkat102, on 06/26/2009, -1/+3Bloody hooray! Who cares?
- jba68, on 06/26/2009, -0/+2I heart Magic Keg
- jba68, on 06/26/2009, -0/+2only pretentious ***** who are not welcome to the party.
