- perryc, on 01/09/2009, -4/+26You'll never have a second chance to make the first impression.
That's why it counts. - ThatGirlTasha, on 01/09/2009, -2/+12Lessons learned from an eighties dandruff shampoo commercial,
- da_bradler, on 01/09/2009, -1/+11I hate fake boobs. Consider your first impression with me ruined.
- javin666, on 01/09/2009, -7/+14...and that's why I got a boob job
- JamesBondJr, on 01/08/2009, -4/+10Or just don't be a jerk at any point in the relationship
- inactive, on 01/09/2009, -0/+4Sure, it seems like that sometimes. But there have also been many scientific studies where the results have been drastically different from what was expected. The Milgram Experiment is a good example of this.

So you got a manboob job? - Mujokan, on 01/09/2009, -0/+3It's a conservative loss-minimization strategy, I guess. In neuroeconomics they find people tend towards minimizing losses even when it's irrational. The instinctual game-theory calculator in our brain isn't optimized for maximum results, but it must work for survival, statistically.
- ladyarcher85, on 01/09/2009, -1/+3FTA "Lount said the results fly in the face of Hollywood's portrayal of characters who don't get along at first but end up developing a passionate relationship."
Hollywood says: "But trying to make a movie that is so realistic is boring! It also requires too much thinking to come up with a good story."
Plus, they target those that are easily deceived and have this overly hyped imagination of what real-life romance ought to be. - 321654987, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2says alot about your choice of profession
- inactive, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2Scientists like concrete numbers.
- georgemason01, on 01/09/2009, -1/+2I have this friend named Leonard Shelby, and I get to make a new first impression every time I see him.
- slapthemonkey, on 01/10/2009, -0/+1It's natural
- SubEl, on 01/10/2009, -0/+1I already read "Blink"
- caLt, on 01/09/2009, -2/+3moob job?
- fishbrush, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1I had a teacher in in my high school Economics class make every student who was late to his class on the first day of school say: "You never get a second chance to make a first impression." in front of the entire class before they could take their seat.
- muxaulo, on 01/09/2009, -2/+3Like my Ma used to say, "you never get a second first impression".
- inactive, on 01/09/2009, -3/+4She's going straight into my freezer anyways so it doesn't matter
- zadadka, on 01/09/2009, -2/+3We needed a study?
It's pure animal instinct carried over into social context... - inactive, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1Although it is true, it is a primitive method of establishing trust and can be overcome with higher thinking.
- globalthreat, on 01/09/2009, -1/+2Scientists love proving stuff we already know.
- dborgir, on 01/09/2009, -1/+2Ha. Getting off on the wrong foot.
- adrenalmedulla9, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1Adam Sandler?!
- itmoves, on 01/09/2009, -1/+2Luckily not all of them do, or even more money would be wasted.
- KingGorilla, on 01/09/2009, -1/+1well there was that thing in Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind
- etaubeneck, on 01/09/2009, -2/+2The title is misleading. The study supports the idea that first impressions are important on future relationships but offers no reason why.
- NYConcepts, on 01/09/2009, -1/+1So that's why all those douches go "First". Lame.
- dawnraid101, on 01/09/2009, -2/+2The title made me think that it was an onion article. Damn onion making me suspicious all the time!
- jeremyduffy, on 01/09/2009, -1/+1How about because the animal part of us knows that if we don't size up anyone or thing that we see in about 5 seconds, we could be lunch? It's instinct to see and judge other people.
- fish2003, on 01/13/2009, -0/+0Lol
- fish2003, on 01/13/2009, -0/+0What I find dull is when people try to make themselves sound so "terribly" intelligent. It's dull. And tedious.
To reply, I personally find gut reactions far more accurate than logical reactions to people. I always follow my gut, as following my logical decisions on a person have let me down in the past. I guess it depends on whether you are an intuitive person or not I find people that work purely on logic are a bit "Spockish" generally, and unemotional characters. Just an observation.
But surely, the working intuitively is the whole point in this study. It's a natural human reaction - rather than a learned one - which would imply the logic. - synaestring, on 01/09/2009, -0/+0I am like your friend Leonard Shelby. I am, consequently, gullible. However, I also see things to which others have blinded themselves. I am not fooled where others are lead by the nose.
Net loss for me. Net gain for the groups to which I belong. There is a logic in these things. - FastZ, on 01/09/2009, -1/+1That's where I usually fail. I have always know that "you better make a good first impression!", but then I quit trying after that and always find myself being lonely and bored.
- inactive, on 01/09/2009, -1/+1I don't even know what that means, you posh *****.
- synaestring, on 01/09/2009, -1/+1I sometimes find it rude that people put a huge amount of trust in simplistic heuristics. When people hasten to generalize from superficialities, it becomes apparent after a while. While there is a certain efficiency of wisdom in this, I am often skeptical of such typologically oriented thinkers' judgement. They think from their gut, I digest with my brain.
- inactive, on 01/09/2009, -1/+1Well said synaestring.
- shto, on 01/09/2009, -2/+1Hey..people don't like me? I got a flamethrower in the basement...
- NoozeHound, on 01/09/2009, -2/+1Thanks. I now have the Impressions singing that line over and over...
