Well not quite.
"In some countries, octopuses are on the list of experimental animals on which surgery may not be performed without anesthesia. In the UK, cephalopods such as octopuses are regarded as honorary vertebrates under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 and other cruelty to animals legislation, extending to them protections not normally afforded to invertebrates.[6]"- theOster, on 04/03/2008, -0/+9in the UK? maybe coz they're verte-brits?

- macwisdom, on 04/03/2008, -1/+2More human than human?
- Nelka, on 04/03/2008, -0/+3Meanwhile all the nice octopuses complain that girls only like the jerk octopuses.
- parax, on 04/03/2008, -1/+2Octopi cannot lie or cheat in a way that is humanly perceptible. In order to establish that something is a lie or deception, you need to be able to communicate with the creature. So far, we have not established meaningful dialog with any members of the animal kingdom. Therefore, we can't determine that an octopus lied to another octopus any more than we can discern their political and religious views.
I wish so many articles would stop anthropomorphizing animals.- Kaitsu, on 04/03/2008, -0/+1RTFA. The lying part was:
" The researchers also observed smaller "sneaker" male octopuses put on feminine airs, such as swimming girlishly near the bottom and keeping their male brown stripes hidden in order to win unsuspecting conquests. "- parax, on 04/03/2008, -0/+1I did read the article, but it's just not possible for us to know if an animal is lying. How do we know, for example, that female octopi don't prefer stripeless males? You can't know if an octopus is lying without knowing what both the subject and the target know and communicate to each other. It's not lying if female octopi expect the males to swim "girlishly" and hide their stripes. How do we know the conquest is unexpected without an octopus communicating that fact to us?
- radiopayola, on 04/03/2008, -0/+1I don't think they mentioned it in the article, but the non-sneaker males are larger and bullying each other physically to garner the female's attention. The smaller 'sneaker' male can't compete in this way, so he swims by while disguised as a female to get close. It's hypothesized by the scientists performing the study that the female chooses this male because he displays intelligence and cunning that will give her offspring a better chance of survival. It's not just some 'article' sensationalizing and anthromorphizing... It's the most logical and valid hypothesis, and it's worth reporting on. I wish so many tunnel-vision-slashdot-clone nerds would stop being so anti-anthromorph.

- vanityneverlies, on 04/03/2008, -0/+2The title made it look so exciting, leave it to fox news to even embellish a story about octopuses.
Next thing you know, they will be the group responsible for 9.11..... - Meekus, on 04/03/2008, -1/+2Foxnews? Buried!
- DonnieMarco, on 04/03/2008, -0/+1Octopodes
- radiopayola, on 04/03/2008, -0/+1Old news... Cephalapods are up there in terms of intelligence and communication with dolphins, whales, apes, monkeys, and us... By the way...cuttlefish are way cooler than octipii. This study is actually a carbon copy of a study performed on cuttlefish over a year ago.
- toejuiceDCUP, on 04/03/2008, -0/+2so the octupus acts like a gay guy in order to hang out with the girls?
- GeneralKickass, on 04/03/2008, -0/+1Hehehe....reminds me of the Todd.

- dscottie, on 04/03/2008, -0/+0Never did trust octopuses. Give 'em an inch and they take a yard.
- kd1s, on 04/04/2008, -0/+1I recall a video I'd seen some time ago where they had an octopus in a locked tank in a lab.
There were other aquatic creatures in various tanks in the lab including lobsters, crabs, etc.
They kept noticing their lobster tank was losing population so they setup a video camera to watch what happened.
It turns out the octopus figured out how to unlock his tank, crawled across the floor to the lobster tank and had itself a lobster dinner.
The octopus would then crawl back to its own tank and lock itself back in.
Yeah, there's a little bit of intelligence there. - ClevelandBrown, on 04/04/2008, -0/+0Sex with an octopus would really suck
- mandarin, on 04/04/2008, -0/+1Zoidberg!!!!!
