- baaadbart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2From what I understand, M-theory is still in the "testing" stages. It's only 20-30 years old, so it'll take awhile before it becomes more concrete. There are ways to test this theory, so it's not like scientists are just making up equations to explain the universe. The main thing they're trying to do is explain why quantum physics and relativity both have been proven true (to our extent) and yet their "rules" completely contradict each other.
- ccrook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1M-theory is just expanded string theory adding more dimensions of membranes which strings may move about between and uniting various branches of previous string theory. So calling string theory the leading phyics theory is still true.

Here we go again... First they got us trying to believe that we are big hairless monkeys. Now they got this thing about some "super" string thing. Nowhere in the Bible does it say anything about God saying "Let there be strings!" And the Bible's got all the science we need.
I hope Bush does the right thing and outlaws this from school text-books... we got enough satanic feminine leftist crap being shoved down kids throats as it is.

*smirk* - lollerskates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Could it be the answer? Yes, but not likely. There's practically no chance that this will explain all of physics. Humans aren't able to comprehend existence.
- stuffedstich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually Membrane theory, or M-theroy is now the leading "theory of everything".
- SDNick484, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yep, this has been available for a few years, but it's definitely worth watching. The book by the same title, "The Elegant Universe", is also a worthwhile read.
- edtruckell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0old, but still an excellent link. explained in such a way that pretty much anyone can get their head round it.
- MoonKing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"And as you said, even Digg users can understand it. "
rofl - virga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is pop physics.
especially with brian greene. - darrylring, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've watched this program a couple of times and it does truly describe "the elegant universe".
String theory could possibly be the most important scientific discovery since...sliced bread! - ArchAngel21x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I guess I can say God is pulling all the strings and be right in more ways than one.
- znelson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0old news but good nonetheless. the book "elegant universe" is much better than the PBS special imho (and i hate reading books). they could've explained the n-dimensions idea a lot better and did more with the 3D graphics to help convey the concepts.
- CompIsMyRx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0String theory is obsolete. It only has 10 dimensions. The newest and so far best theory is M-Theory.
- lollerskates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Physical? No. Theoretical and mathematical will do, in this case, though.
I mean you don't expect to be able to see infintesimally small strings of energy, do you? - ejsl23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone have any links to good explanations of the M-theory?
- WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2So, this whole theory is based on faith, right? Seeing as there is nophysical evidence, right?
- Maldy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Some other (even older?) on-line scienc videos at http://www.vega.org.uk/series/lectures/index.php
- Computer_Kid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Humans aren't able to comprehend existence."
I don't believe anything can comprehend existence! - xamox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm down with M-Theory.
- Bluezdood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah from what I understand, string theory was kind of done away with when it just would not work in certain key models. Laugh if you will, but it is theory after all. In any case it's interesting.
- hendoz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If every theory that was proposed was correct then they wouldn't be theories then would they, they would be laws. We have the existing laws only because someone developed and followed the scientific theory over and over again until the "theory" was proved to be concrete over and over again. All laws were developed out of failed theories! Too many people want to dog science even while they reaps its rewards. Watch theses videos, it might be a cliche for some of you but knowledge is power. On the other hand ignorance is bliss!
- gatorsrule21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hmmm...the videos quit working for me for some reason... :-(
- rajaal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, decades-old news, but very interesting. Here's the "official" superstring theory website for anyone interested: http://www.superstringtheory.com/
Did that Fred Phelps hate-propaganda website get obliterated or what? - spinalcracker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://torrentreactor.net/view.php?id=40694
In case you don't want to watch it in the small web player - bryantee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm reading the book right now.
- Mike.ohara, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hmm
"My Karma ran over your Dogma." - floejoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As far as I understand it M Theory and String Theory are the exact same thing, different names for same thing. Its all a string theory but M Theory is the latest reincarnation of it and most updated one.
String Theory is testable, however, and there are 2-3 particle accelerators being built around the world that will test for existence of Gravitons, which should be a stepping stone in providing concrete proof.
While it may be 20-30 years old and while some of us may be aware of it, the impression I have gotten is that general public is absolutely oblivious to this. The way I see it is that M Theory is in fact most likely accurrate, with minor modifications possibly.
Quantum mechanics and relativity are still theories and to this date they are being tested, but they are accepted as being true. String theory will be the same.
I picked up the book after I saw the show about 2 years ago, deffinetly worth a read, and not condescending either. - Corrosionx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's still a theory.
I've seen a much more interesting theory the other day that included Plato's philosophy, alchemy and sacred geometry... much cooler than the Big Bang... people with a spiritual side and an open mind will digg it.
Drunvalo Melchizedek's Sacred Geometry
http://tinyurl.com/8avmr - koloblican11763, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is this the movie based on the book? Because if it is the book is better, though for me reading about how little we know and how small we are in comparison to the galaxy let alone the universe kinda freaks me out just a little. It makes you feel very small and not important.
- grizwald, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah this is really really old .. but i have watched it like 10 times .. great stuff .. ill digg it
- TheGooseyOne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ah damn you! i posted this link in the last time travel digg that was up here and someone must have took it from there and put it up on digg...i was sure it had been up here before so I didn't post it...
anyway, good film...my chemistry teacher actually let us watch the whole thing in class over a week or two...great stuff - gatorsrule21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this has to be my all time favorite digg
- cosmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0its new to me
- Gepetto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey! I got that book! +1
- JooMommy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good job on commenting a story to death guys. I would post an inspiring or thoughtful comment right now, but I don't feel like getting in the middle of a theology/scientific debate. Relax guys, it's just the meaning of existence here.
- Optimus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1WackyT, you moron. Stop posting to science threads with your ID crap. Shove your ID dogma up your ass while you're at it.
Damn. - chosenone-, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Dupe, bad documentary... too repetative it's insane.
- floejoe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yeah, its old but I figured alot of people have not heard of it and the documentary is split into chapters so its easy to watch it whenever one has a moment of free time. Also, its free.
And as you said, even Digg users can understand it. - Hebrewhammer913, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0dupe
- rompom7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0dupe.
- WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1And, of course for this to actually be considered science, they do have physical evidence of this theory, right?
- modal, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0You have to laugh at this *****. It's just as bad as the man to ape... I mean ape to man... crapola.

What is Digg?
