- crackerjack, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26@BloodJunkie:
Isn't the whole point of digging an article the fact that it gets your attention?
"Stephen Hawking's receives over 10,000 Replies on Yahoo Answers" is more of an eye-catching target than, "Stephen Hawking uses Yahoo Answers too!"
Plus, the 'first' post was in the Celebrity section, whereas the second one is in the General Sciences section... most people here are not going to read the Celebrity section.
It's all about knowing your target audience and how to pitch to them. This article deserves the digg 'cause they did it right. They went after the audience that would be interested. Nice try to the first submitter, but learn your audience...
Didn't mean to sound like a jerk... sorry! - p9s50W5k4GUD2c6, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Dr. Hawking's question: "How can the human race survive the next hundred years?"
The 520 or so pages of responses to his question seem to sum us up in a way (some colossally moronic responses followed by some insightful attempts as wrestling with the question). Perhaps that was the reason for his blog-experiment after all.
We are an intriguing and promising species. - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24over 15,000 now, albeit not many of them are valid.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Not everyone can be a Steven Hawking. Yet everyone has something to contribute to society, be it bad or good it does contribute.
My sister took a class where he lectured them once... she says hes beyond brilliant.. - paradoxic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Either way.. PR machine or not, it's cool to have someone of his status interacting and provoking discussion even if most of the answers are trash.
- Osjpr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11S.Hawking must be thinking as he peruses the simple responses, "ye gads! Who do they think they're kidding? And to think these people vote -_- ...we are DOOMED! " .........i love how assured of themselves as they give their mini cute answers. XD
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10how about ending affirmative action and start making people be RESPONSIBLE for their own actions? thats a good place to start.
- loriencfau, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I think that is T-Shirt(TM) material.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12It's up to 15,000 now and its a very good question.
Looks like Zippo is right and they are mostly not well thought out replies. - Osjpr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Cut their pay to very low levels and remove most of their perks. Then you will lessen the kind of people lured by money.
- zforrester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Politicians ARE normal people. You think they're grown in tubes or something?
- shepherd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yahoo "PR machine" at work..
http://search.yahoo.com/search?ei=UTF-8&fr=sfp&p=Stephen+Hawking
On top of page, before results are shown .. "Stephen Hawking asks the world a question on Yahoo! Answers" - kenadak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I think a one line answer is much more relevant that trying to convey complex social and political agendas into a simple question. Yes, The answer is Very complex but the community together answering the question will convey what I think ultimately will answer the question. Religion is a common answer, as most religions were created as an answer to that specific question, I think in the minds of those answering; it's their answer.
for those interested, my answer was one word. 'Curiosity.' It may have killed the cat, but it may save humanity. - mournsanity, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Ending religion and faith-based ignorance is a good start.
- eggo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6great idea, start with yourself, we'll all go next... honest.
- 0x00, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Those ***** are disrespecting him by using 'u,' 'LOL,' and not even replying in complete thoughts. If they can't seriously contribute, then they shouldn't contribute at all.
- birdwatcher3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@0x00: Are you surpised?
- scratt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Hawking is a legend. This is one very good example of how the internet is a good thing...
Where else would you be able to be asked questions by, and give answers to, such interesting people. Cool. - muikano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4stephen hawking's question isnt really a question. It's a leading poke. The obvious conclusion to this question would be the deconcentration of humanity.
Space travel, terraforming, and colonization, folks.
That's prolly what he's the proponent for. Half of all disputes is over land and freshwater. There's plenty in Mars polar ice caps. There's no reason that Mars cant be the next Midwest. Head West, young man, head west! - quangdiggity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I hope you're being sarchastic. It's not often that I come across the words "destroy" and "peace" within the same sentence.
- kazem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Most of their "replies" are 1 liners. More than anything, this event is a great example of the disparity between the intelligence of someone like Hawking and the intelligence of the random internet user.
My favorite answer was "TRUST IN JESUS, pal!" Classic. - raid517, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4On another note, it is sad the amount of drivel and l33t speak, and IM/Cell Phone text type language and immature answers he got. You get to speak to one of the most influential figures in all of history, who will be remembered long after everyone else here is dead and long after the current crop of wars and presidents has been long forgotten, yet you waste it by telling him how cool you are because you 'hax0red the matrix' and that you thought he was gr8t and 'c U l8ter m8???'
Of course you do know that people who speak like this (and who write like this too) really are 100% genuine mental retards? - geoffpado, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5So Christianity would have to go too, right?
- rbvmusic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well not so surprising, I bet if Shigeru Miyamoto posted a question on the wii on digg we'll probably get 10k comments easily.
- Nerys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3WOw how neat that someone like that would interact with us in this way. I am curious as to what his intentions are and objectives.
The question on the other hand (please no offense meant since I am certain he has an alterier reason for posting it) is non sensical. the reason is simple there is almost no possible way we WONT surivive for 100 years.
100 years is nothing a tiny fraction of time. Short of an ELE asteroid or something similar we are nearly 100% assured of lasting a mere 100 years longer.
500 years would have been better but would outside of the mental grasp of most people me included.
I dont see anything not even nuclear war (highly unlikely) preventing us from surviving 100 years. I think he need to elaborate the question a bit IE what does he mean buy survive. - Insolence, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4What peaceful religion? (I was going to mention the Crusades and Tibetan slavery, if you replied)
Why not preach John Lennon instead. - synaesthesia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Speaking of which, I was thinking that its a shame considering Digg's userbase that we dont have celebrity interviews like Slashdot's. They have posts like 'ask so-and-so a question, he will answer 10 of the best' with the replies following shortly after; there is no reason with the sheer volume of users we have that we shouldnt have somebody who knows a person worth asking interviewing. *****, with the digg moderation system, it could be as simple as "the 10 most digged comments will be posed to this individual".
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5We aren't a promising species as long as our answers are "trust in god" or some other ridiculous *****. Yes, why take any sense of responsibility or initiate any sort of rational and progressive action when we can just be the self-serving, rightous, bigoted pigs we've always been and keep our fingers crossed that "god" somehow shelters us with a magic rainbow that makes bad things not happen.
God damn, we are all so ***** doomed. Those messages and that question should be a litmus test for deciding who is shot in the head on the spot and who gets to continue living. If you answer with "one day at a time" or "through love" or "through jesus christ" -- you get a bullet right in the temple. - DubbedOver, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Force normal people to take the politicians place, and those people will turn into politicians as well.
I'm sure you don't really mean force either, because forcing anyone to do something means they put just enough in to not be bad at it which would really put us in the same situation we're in now. - BlackCow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My favorite responce, One day at a time. :-D
- resslx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+215,000 comments? I read the first page, my brain did not. Stephen really has his work cut out for him here. When he writes “A Brief History of Yahoo! Answers,” he's going to lament not choosing a community like Digg with a comment rating system. It may be irrelevant if he's going to read them all, but it would be so interesting to see what floats to the top.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3With dumbass answers like "Unity Through LOVE." and "through JESUS CHRIST pal!", the human species is ***** doomed.
Seriously, Stephen ***** Hawking poses a question to you and you use it as an opportunity to spread your hippy crap or your mouthbreathing religious *****?! What the hell?! - ohmar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3People need to read more. The parent comment is "Animal Farm" summed up in a few words. It worked so well for them. And the Soviet Union as well.
- vern01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"deconcentrating" the human population is NOT possible within the next 100 years! It MIGHT be possible in 300-500 or 1000 years, but more likely we will NEVER be able to get off this "liferaft in space".
- PackRat24, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Anarchy in America...That will work reeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally well...
- t1c52002, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Exactly, honeslty I doubt he is going to get past the 15 "answers" but it is a great concept. Who knows maybe he will read your answer and pick it as the best "answer". That alone for me is worth the 5 minutes for my attempt at "answering" this question.
- bmson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I felt an urge to press the "Report Abuse" button hahaha...
But I didn't he's a living legend - deanlowe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Stephen says don't cut and run.
http://www.comedycentral.com/sitewide/media_player/play.jhtml?itemId=71005 - phlydwg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1More Action less Digg.
- phlydwg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey, let's just find a way to turn everyone into robots, huh? Let me know how that works out!
- phlydwg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe it;s just his way of getting young people freaked out enough that they start doing something about serious global issues -- so we don't have to worry about colonizing other planets.
- phlydwg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Kinda sux that it comes to that though. Why does humanity have to be like a virus -- killing everything in its path?
- JMJimmy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I liked #16001 ;)
- jerrysizzler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1how about both!?!? then everyone can be ignorant!
- Duke999R, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wish I'd read that book by that wheelchair guy :(
- modestmouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can't wait to see which answer he chooses as the best!
- jgzman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would like to point out that if, say, I were doom-saying, then this might be an acceptable answer. However, if Stephen Hawking is calling for a look at surviving the next 100 years, then we might consider actually looking. Tottering along is fine, but sooner or later we're gonna fall off the catastrophy curve. Clearly Hawking thinks it might be "sooner" rather than "later" and he might be right.
- BlackCow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2A lot of people said turn to God. Thats all well and good but I think we should do without religion. God is just to give people a peace of mind but religion is what causes war.
- fquednau, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, if you run an "extract sensible contents" (ones that relate to the question in some intelligible way) filter beforehand even he should be able to sift through it in a couple of hours.
