- NiftyG, on 04/12/2009, -5/+42Do we really need to be thinking up even more ways to overpopulate the planet?
- RUBallsingMe, on 04/12/2009, -6/+23The crazies won't like it.
- Biscuitz, on 04/12/2009, -2/+17I'm torn on this. I really am.
I feel bad for couples who would make perfect parents but can't seem to have a baby, and I wish they could. But I also agree that we have too many people as it is on this planet.
I want to say "This is GREAT!" and I want to say "Oh great, more humans". - takamalak, on 04/12/2009, -1/+16Nature is not some entity bent of directing human evolution. Some people are infertile for a variety of non genetic reasons.
- ChromeGhost, on 04/12/2009, -5/+17It's great to see stem cell breakthroughs that will help make our lives better, longer and more enjoyable. With anti-aging technologies we will be able to live youthful lives until we die. We will be able to chose when we want to have children and we wont have to worry about our age or biological clocks(males have it too). We will be able to heal broken bones and repair damaged nerves. With this technology and also bionics, it will be fascinating to see what the future has in store for us.
- Apokalyps2547, on 04/12/2009, -3/+15That doesn't stop the crazies. They're crazy!
- SilverBlade2k, on 04/12/2009, -0/+11what about infertile men?
- skc0der, on 04/12/2009, -1/+12what about murdering non-innocent babies?
- offrdbandit, on 04/12/2009, -2/+13The stem cells are not harvested from embryos, so I don't really see your point.
- TBombadil, on 04/12/2009, -2/+13great, cause we really need more people.
- bigteebo, on 04/12/2009, -2/+11Octomom ruined it.
- kleptomaniac, on 04/12/2009, -1/+10I'm pretty sure that curing infertility will not result in a sudden outbreak of infertility.
- Kaster, on 04/12/2009, -14/+21Good idea, lets genetically help people reproduce who nature did not intend to do so. Children of Men coming right up.
- Bmarofsky, on 04/12/2009, -1/+8Great, more babies.
- datarefuge, on 04/13/2009, -0/+6Actually, being a "religious fundie", I don't have any problem with this particular treatment. It's an ADULT stem cell treatment. You know, the kind that was encouraged and funded by the federal government under Bush and has no ethical concerns like embryonic stem cell treatments.
We've never had an issue with adult stem cell treatment. In fact, adult stem cells have a spectacular track record in contrast to embryonic stem cell treatments. - inactive, on 04/12/2009, -3/+9So long as they're not getting those stem cells from murdered innocent babies, I'm all for it.
- ChromeGhost, on 04/12/2009, -0/+6well I mean even if you're biologically immortal, you may get into an accident at some point if you live an extremely long life.
- RikusKhan, on 04/13/2009, -0/+5WOW .. once again ADULT STEM CELLS come to the rescue. Wanna really mess with the religious fundies and the other crazies who don't want to blend embryos in the womb ... READ the article.
"But four years ago scientists in the USA showed it was possible to obtain stem cells from the ovaries of adult women that could be grown into mature egg cells."
It is the 5th sentence in the article ... surely you really-smart, intellectual types can read five sentences before you start commenting. - bobbi21, on 04/13/2009, -0/+4yeah..cus the woman of tribes in africa and other places that only eat natural foods never go infertile...
/sarcasm - jedimasterchief, on 04/12/2009, -0/+3exactly!
- ThatsNotPoetry, on 04/13/2009, -0/+4Killing babies? Do you know how to read?
- inactive, on 04/13/2009, -2/+6Abortions are glorious. I think all anti-abortion people shouldn't be allowed to have the cures that end up being provided from stemcell research.
- crickey23, on 04/12/2009, -2/+5I feel the same way, sort of. I know that people who want to have children but cannot may find joy in the fact that they may now have a chance, but at the same time from a scientific point I don't see why this is necessary.
Human populations have gotten out of control, and it's becoming harder and harder every year to see how much longer the planet can support our bursting population. Going along with this, the process of natural selection that is used to control who gets to pass on their genes in order to make sure only the most fit survived has essentially been weeded out. Almost anyone can have children and pass on their genes, and along with their genes comes a lot of potentially harmful diseases and cancers that could be eliminated.
I know it might sound like a horrible thing when I say this, but perhaps these people who are unable to have children be kept this way, so that natural selection can continue in the human population. On the other hand instead of saying that they cannot have children at all, why don't they get a surrogate mother or adopt a child? There are plenty of children who have been abandoned or whose parents cannot care for them for many reasons. Why add more to the population and neglect those children? - Gguillorn, on 04/13/2009, -1/+4Preemptive attacks, huh?
- NiftyG, on 04/13/2009, -0/+3It's called adoption. That's where good parents take over the raising of a child with missing or imperfect parents.
- peteyb1313, on 04/13/2009, -2/+5You are treating nature as if it's some sort of god... and it's not
- peteyb1313, on 04/13/2009, -0/+2thats what i am saying, since you are infertile you wouldn't have to use a condom with your girlfriend/significant other, which is a plus in an otherwise ***** situation
- inactive, on 04/12/2009, -4/+6again, evolution is not an entity.
Also we evolved, sophisticated brains that see problems and find solutions, so it is evolution helping these women from that point of view.
We also developed compassion, the first known instance of this is a stone age human who lost their teeth, and whose fossil shows that they healed over i.e someone had to chew their food for them, for them to survive long enough to let the gums etc heal.
Tell me you've evolved the at least the same level compassion as a stone age man. - inactive, on 04/12/2009, -2/+4creativity is pretty much THE human trait, brought about but our , well ***** epic brains.
Also As I'm a chemist, not an anthropologist, No I didn't "find some bones".
Instead, what i like to do, is read, and watch informative programes like david attenboroughs.
"The well-preserved skull, 1.77-million years old belonged to a male ***** erectus about 40 years old. All his teeth, except the left canine, were missing. The empty tooth sockets had been filled in by a regrowth of bone, the scientists said, indicating that the man had been toothless for at least two years before he died at what was then an old age. (The discoverers call him the "old man.")"
It's actually older than I thought...
Also you are a massive *****. - offrdbandit, on 04/13/2009, -2/+4You people really have no respect for anyone who disagrees with you. Apparently you think anyone who disagrees with embryonic stem cell research must be a radical, and therefore cannot have a rational reason for their opinion. Moreover you are willing to project all manner of idiotic behavior on someone you do not know or understand. How very "open minded" of you.
- thelove, on 04/12/2009, -3/+5Octomom. Nuff said.
- climbaesthetic, on 04/13/2009, -2/+4That is like saying you should wear glasses to correct your vision. You can't see for a reason. Oh yea...thats not natural selection....
- offrdbandit, on 04/12/2009, -8/+10But if you believe evolution has brought humanity this far, why not trust it with the future of mankind?
- Biscuitz, on 04/13/2009, -0/+2I agree with this too, I think people should absolutely adopt, but sadly, the ropes people have to jump just adopt a child is ... well, aggravating.
- bobbi21, on 04/13/2009, -1/+3it'll just be rich ppl who can afford this though. and rich countries are actually scared of underpopulation.
- peteyb1313, on 04/13/2009, -1/+3No condoms!
- aletoledo, on 04/13/2009, -0/+2@pinserz
Germany and Japan are also countries that are afraid of underpopulation. They both pay parents to have children. - Jashobeam5, on 04/13/2009, -0/+2offrdbandit- Welcome to the hatred of digg. Reasoning has no place here. They hate because they have been taught to hate anyone with a religious view.
- datarefuge, on 04/13/2009, -1/+3Yeah, someone needs to learn basic reading comprehension. These are ADULT stem cells. Not embryonic.
- bobbi21, on 04/13/2009, -1/+3@offrdbandit
"So basically, anything and everything is evolution? That's the best explanation you can come up with? How rigorous and scientific of you."
If you understood what evolution is then his explanation makes perfect sense.
I would agree he's stretching with the broken teeth guy. He could have just ground up his food with a stone or something. Or maybe started eating lots of eggs and grubs. they're pretty soft. - Jashobeam5, on 04/13/2009, -1/+2You didn't read the article. They are using stem cells from the infertile women. Stem cells from your own body have a less chance of being rejected. Embryonic stem cells are not a part of this study.
- Jashobeam5, on 04/13/2009, -0/+1Hitler's Mom lost several children and was scared she would lose him, too. Nature had no hand in that.
- inactive, on 04/12/2009, -6/+7Killing babies to make babies?!?!?!
/s - inactive, on 04/13/2009, -0/+1This is a breakthrough.
- needlesurfer, on 04/12/2009, -4/+5yeah we need more people so much on this planet, really.
It gives you a good idea of how disproportionately important women desires have become in our society, they literally trample common sense and the good of the planet or the society they live in.
I want a baby and I can't have one: here we will find myriads of way to do it.
I am pregnant but i don't want a baby: no problem, abort
I wanna ***** everyone I want and not get pregnant: no problem, pills, or even better condom, so other take the responsibility for what you and you only have every right on.
I wanna have a baby but I wanna have a career: no problem well adjust the whole school and social structure to accommodate your desire.
I don't have the ressource to take care of my kids but I want more: no problem, here's eight, now get on TV and don't forget it is the doctor who helped you who is evil and wrong not you sweetie. - xexx, on 04/13/2009, -0/+1I say just make it a choice... with immortality comes infertility.. Choose carefully.
At least until we expand into space. - digitalhair, on 04/13/2009, -0/+1If the aggravation associated with the ropes you have to jump through is a potential deal-breaker for anyone, well, I'm curious about whether those adoptive "parents" have taken the time to consider what's really motivating them to want a child... and whether this is the best thing for them, and from a sense-of-responsibility standpoint, for their communities...
- BrewBeau, on 04/13/2009, -0/+1@biscuitz
I always hear that, but is it really that hard for people to adopt? Or is it just that hard to adopt white infant babies? - ThatsNotPoetry, on 04/13/2009, -0/+1Thank you.
- digitalhair, on 04/13/2009, -1/+2do we really need to justify the continued supression of these kinds of technologies - technologies that would improve and save the lives of people otherwise as deserving of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness as you are - by assuming that the only way to prevent human overpopulation is to promote acceptance for unnecessary suffering and death (many times accidentally/coincidentally/deliberatally/institutionally precipitated)???
This assumption regarding maintaining the status quo is sometimes held by some of the most gifted and intelligent scientists and engineers I know --people incredibly optimistic about the challenges the human mind can overcome, starting first with the assumption that the problem is solvable and therefore worthy of experimentation and perserverance toward engineering a solution-- and their common tendency to resolve that, for example, curing cancer would overpopulate the planet and lead to the destruction of everything that makes life worth living, absolutely BAFFLES me.
Forgive me for sounding like an overly optomistic blowhard, but this attitude sounds like a cop-out or lack of imagination or appreciation for the humanistic triumph of scientific discovery, at the least.
My wife and I consider our decision (it truly is a decision) not to have children an act of Love given the instability of our world today, and the more I esoterically understand about the real catalysts behind the unnecessary suffering and death in society, the more I feel justified about choosing not to have children at this point in my life. -
