- ClavinJ, on 02/09/2008, -2/+49this is digg in its prime, showing us quick links to awesome stuff like that pic
- inactive, on 02/09/2008, -1/+28Looks like the alien dimension from Half-Life 1.
- phnx0221, on 02/09/2008, -0/+24Wow, that is very beautiful. One of the things that I've always wanted to do was explore volcanoes like this. I know that the gases are incredibly dangerous, and you would have to have suitable protection, but man...it would be amazing to see that in person.
I guess having other people who are adequately equipped do this, and take pictures of it is the next best thing. :) Great submission! - shaundee, on 02/09/2008, -2/+20Thats where Xenu put the bombs!

- openthink, on 02/09/2008, -0/+5I agree with you, phnx. Would love to see this up close. It's such a vivid pic, though, you do get some sense of it. Looks like the topography of some other planet....or some imagined or simulated planetary surface.
- ekin09, on 02/09/2008, -2/+6Yeah, that picture doesn't justify how surreal it actually is. I highly recommend picking up the HD-DVD Planet Earth series.
- Mr.Gone, on 02/09/2008, -0/+4What do you mean "almost" surreal. This is pretty damn surreal. Nature is amazing sometimes.

- identifiedlogo, on 02/09/2008, -0/+1thats in Dallol, Ethiopia. Its is in the Danakil depression. it is the lowest point and the hottest place on earth.
The volcano is the lowest volcano on land. It last erupted in 1926.

- AriaGloris, on 02/09/2008, -0/+1Turns out "The Dead Sea" is the lowest place on earth positioned 417 meters (1,373 feet) below sea level!!
Check wiki out, there's some fantastic images (flickr also has loads of gooden's). - mal1964, on 02/09/2008, -0/+1Wow!, that's a Spectacular (Almost Surreal) Shot Of Volcanic Crater
- AriaGloris, on 02/09/2008, -0/+1I believe the Afar Depressionis one of the lowest places on earth, Lake Asal lies –155 meters or –500 ft below sea level (DV is somewhere around 80?)
Either way check out - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extremes_on_Earth - TheKoopaBros, on 02/09/2008, -0/+1It reminds me of glass and melted wax. Stunning.

- Recluse, on 02/10/2008, -0/+1I'm sorry but when did 1280x1024 become widescreen?
- SurlyDuff, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1Nah...actually the slush is a fairly yellow-brown consistency. I'm guessing that's just dirt though...hopefully.
- inactive, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1Heres an interesting fact about Nat Geo propaganda efforts in their current productions.
They use the term "volcanic gases" in place of carbon dioxide, but still use the term sulfur dioxide where it is accurate.
Seems they don't want the kiddies to know CO2 emissions are natural in any manner. This is blue print propaganda.
BTW the volume of natural CO2 emissions from the tens of thousands of km of volcanic rifts is still completely unknown........ - gh0st3000, on 02/10/2008, -0/+0In that case, you should really get everyone to stop pissing in the streets...
