- dWhisper, on 10/10/2007, -23/+80Would anyone honestly miss South Carolina if we dropped it off? Georgia and North Carolina would get a nifty little bay and a whole lot more beach front property, plus, in light of this stuff, the collective IQ of our nation would go up. It's win-win
- Coven, on 10/10/2007, -5/+42Except for, you know, landing on that mountain of evidence. What do they call it? Oh Yeah, a FOSSIL RECORD.
Oh snap, nevermind. Those were placed there just to test our faith. - bbqsalad, on 10/10/2007, -11/+42Crazy *****.
- BrandonMills, on 10/10/2007, -2/+25This isn't about looking down on your religion. It's about you using government funds to promote religion instead of science.
If you want 'religion' taught in school, it will be taught in a broadscoped religion class, and it will cover ALL religions. Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddism, etc. - Bdog2g2, on 10/10/2007, -7/+25As a former South Carolinian, I can say this doesn't surprise me. Which is why I was smart and got out out that state as quick as I could, after 23 years of being raised there.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -6/+22I pray that it does...
- chicoer2001, on 10/10/2007, -10/+25Forget religion. Why is a private school getting funding. I thought private means private.
- theshizzler, on 10/10/2007, -4/+19In the year 2000, you say? How progressive! It surely has become a bastion of reasoned debate in the seven years since then.
- ahawks, on 10/10/2007, -15/+29I have pretty much sworn never to live in the South, and will do my best to avoid visiting there at all, because of this kind of BS.
I think these people must have their Bible Belt applied around their neck, and a little too tight to allow sufficient blood flow to their brains. - afastingartist, on 10/10/2007, -6/+20buried for inaccuracies, Bob Jones lifted its ban on interracial dating in 2000
- jmpeagle, on 10/10/2007, -9/+23we have two different Americas in the U.S., red states and blue states with a totally complete different set of value. The country should be split into 2 and see how the red states like losing all their tax revenue they get from the blue states given that the average red stater makes about half of what the average blue stater makes. They are all pro-war cause they don't pay that much for it.
- bachdog, on 10/10/2007, -11/+23creationism is not a theory. it is a lie, just like Original Sin
- holygram, on 10/10/2007, -10/+22-sigh-
I hate where I live. - dagnome1984, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12There are three types of states, blue states, red states, and New Hampshire.
- HeartMan, on 10/10/2007, -23/+35More creationist bunk. Will it never end?
dam - carpespasm, on 10/10/2007, -5/+17I'll just speak up for the people down here that aren't idiots, but i will say that seeing things like this burns whether you're from the south or north or wherever. Being a nearly witness to idiocy sucks no matter where you are
- scott9378, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12You're right, that is completely irrelevant to what I said.
- pintomp3, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12we don't need to molest kids, we are allowed to date carbon.
- geekee, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14The article is not entirely accurate. The state increased the pool of money for students attending any private college in SC, and also added Bob Jones U. to the list of qualifying private schools (21 total). The fact that Bob Jones U. made the list is the news. That's disturbing.
- scott9378, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13Well, to our credit, we tried it before and the rest of the country wouldn't let us... just saying. But if we did secede, at least we'd be rid of Bush!
I live in SC and this is ***** news. - Toshibi, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11I live just north of South Carolina in a small town on the NC/SC border. It's hard to get the hell out of these ***** holes.
- 35263526, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10The fact that you'd call evolution 'random' would seem to indicate to me that you don't have a clue what you're talking about.
- terminalpariah, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11The Progressive Conservative party tried this in Ontario a few years ago. Any family with a child in a private religious school would receive a yearly grant (or was it a tax credit?) They wanted to reduce public school attendance.
Of course, in Ontario the taxpayers have always funded the entire Catholic school system! Since it's government-funded, anyone is allowed to attend. AFAIK they do teach creationism, but in religion class, not science class. - o0justice0o, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12Crazy racist *****
- rationalist, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9He is completely right. What is more, Ron Paul has introduced specific legislation that would take away from citizens the right to seek redress from the courts for such violations of the First Amendment. He specifically wants to bar the Supreme Court from even *hearing* cases involving challenges to the Constitutionality of government actions that violate the Establishment Clause.
In 2005, he introduced H.R. 4379, which contains the following language:
SEC. 3. LIMITATION ON JURISDICTION.
The Supreme Court of the United States and each Federal court--
(1) shall not adjudicate--
(A) any claim involving the laws, regulations, or policies of any State or unit of local government relating to the free exercise or establishment of religion;
(B) any claim based upon the right of privacy, including any such claim related to any issue of sexual practices, orientation, or reproduction; or
(C) any claim based upon equal protection of the laws to the extent such claim is based upon the right to marry without regard to sex or sexual orientation; and
(2) shall not rely on any judicial decision involving any issue referred to in paragraph (1).
http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c109:H.R.4379:
Check his record - has has included similar language in H.R. 1094, which he introduced in February of this year, "To provide that human life shall be deemed to exist from conception."
http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d110:h.r.01094:
You owe it to yourself to check the record. - aedes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8oh, and while we're on this topic as well, it's not even accepted anymore that evolution is a theory... but all you creationists don't be getting too excited yet. Evolution is now considered a fact/law by some scientists in the field (natural selection is still a theory). I can give two references off of the top of my head. One is the 6th ed. of Campbell Biology (about as canonical as you can get when it comes to bio textbooks), and the other is "Evolution: The Triumph of an Idea" by Carl Zimmer.
- elcidcannon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9don't worry we want to get away from you, too.
- rhabd0mancer, on 10/10/2007, -11/+19South Carolina is the target state of the loony christian "dominionists". They want to take over the state and create a christian theocracy.
- pintomp3, on 10/10/2007, -8/+16isn't that the argument they used for slavery? there are certain base laws that should be followed if they want to be part of the united states, like separation of church and state.
- ZWarren69, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11This guy has numerous ***** accounts. He is a troll. He gets banned, frequently.
- bachdog, on 10/10/2007, -6/+14if evolution is a religion then who collects the offerings and molests the kids?
- geekee, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10http://www.charleston.net/news/2007/jul/31/bob_jones_aid11798/
Actual story if you want to skip the blogspam. - MacEnvy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8If someone's ignorant about enough things, and for a long enough period of time, they eventually may as well be called stupid. There's no functional difference.
- esconsult1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Just because you live in SC does not make what you say true. It was only in 2000 that Bob Jones University ended the ban on interracial dating:
http://archives.cnn.com/2000/US/03/04/bob.jones/index.html - h0w412d, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8very good point. the very fact theists don't want to teach all religions proves they just want to promote their own, not offer different perspectives.
- JonLatane, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Loans yes, grants OF COURSE NOT. Government grants are the government funding the school, basically subsidizing (what amounts to) a company whose chief interest is, in fact, to make money. What if the government just went and paid half the salaries to everyone at Microsoft, just because Microsoft is an important organization whose products affect our future (moreso than students from a university)?
A publicly-funded school is designed to benefit the PUBLIC. It gets public funding for being owned by the public (the government being the public's representatives) and being answerable to the public. A privately-funded school is not; it is, in the end, designed to benefit the institution by attracting rich successful people and making them more rich and more successful. If some part of what they do is bad for the general public, ***** 'em. They're not answerable to the public. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -10/+17You obviously have no idea what the south is like. You make judgments based on one article or because of the actions of some of the religious people down here? The south isn't as backwards as you think. The most successful African Americans are found in the south. They make more money in Atlanta, then anywhere else in the country. The south is the home of major corporations as well, Coke, UPS, Home Depot, just to name a few. Let's not forget, the best football conference is the SEC.
Your comment, based on nothing, just shows your ignorance as there are people in all parts of our country that do things that some people won't agree with it. - wil2200, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11I have said it before - the US is moving backwards, in an age where we have split the atom and glimpsed the wonders of the farthest galaxy - we get ***** like this
I could understand that back in the day, no one really understood much and needed the captivation of god to help them out and after all this progress and (dare I say it?) evolution, I still cannot imagine that people are still holding on to that old rhetoric.
In addition, since evolution is science, i suggest that these idiots who like creationism so much, abandon what science has done in the last few hundred years and live in their own dark ages fantasy land - no indoor plumbing, AC, cars, medicine and what not
just my 2 cents - pintomp3, on 10/10/2007, -5/+12state don't have the right to violate the constitution.
- DrColossus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I think a lot of states do this. I know that Minnesota does at the very least because I have a lot of friends that get state grants that go to various Catholic Schools around the state.
- Chakat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Actually, I had that class in middle school. Exploratory foreign language. Learn a bit of french language and culture, bit of spanish language and culture, bit of japanese language and culture. Sort of an intro to several different cultures, so you can decide which you want to study with a bit more firm understanding of each.
- Aticper, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8No, the big bang is a theory because there is evidence for it.
Creationism is not a theory, because it has no evidence for it. It is a HYPOTHESIS, and an idiotic one at that.
It actually embarrases me that a large portion of the human race believes in an unsubstantiated hypothesis, that requires you to ignore almost all of the laws of physics to accept.
To call creationism a theory is an insult to all of the scientists who worked to establish scientific doctrines.
To sum it up:
You, sir, are a dumbass. - bugsy187, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6This isn't competition, it's government allocation of funds. It's a form of central planning, not markets. They're subsidizing a religious university that isn't even accredited to my knowledge.
- jerbaker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I don't know about you, but I think digging a hole and throwing all the money into it is a better use than a religious re-education camp.
- aedes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6ok, so since you're not refuting the fact that they're crazy *****, I assume you agree? I call fallacy of irrelevance.
- woody56292, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I live in South Carolina, and sadly, I can't say this surprises me. So many ignorant people here. ( note: ignorant, not stupid )
- coheedcollapse, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8You can't pick on them, but it's fine to execute them. Right?
- fatdog789, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Are you saying that the Earth doesn't grow older every year?
HOT DAMN! OUR PLANET HAS DISCOVERED THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH!!!
If you mean the calculation of Earth's age, that's only changed 3 times in the past 20 years; each time, the change narrowed the range of possible ages, with the most recent calculation being the narrowest range so far.
As for the support of creationism:
Show me something other than the Bible or other Abrahamic text. Don't bring up that eye, nose, ear, brain, or heart ***** that creationists love. If necessary, I can detail exactly how the modern human eye could develop from a single light-sensitive cell. Don't give me that complexity crap; the complexity of life hasn't changed that much in the past few billion years; only the scale of reference has truly changed.
Finally, entropy (ie, the theory of chaos) IS NOT THE THEORY OF DETERIORATION. Get your facts straight when you try to slam a theory. There is no theory, or even concept, of deterioration in the physical sciences.
Evolution is not a religion. It can be easily observed. Indeed, the only religion in the world that does not accept the existence of evolution is the conglomerate of "Evangelical" Churches who have perverted the Bible to their own Satanic ends. - marius404, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8You know if you would RTFA you would know the whole problem is that they are getting state funding.
- o0justice0o, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Another notch on the belt for the first state to secede
