- Dumbledorito, on 11/22/2008, -3/+51Video game bots have had this for years. No matter how far away I am, they magically know exactly where I'm shooting from.
- pintomp3, on 11/22/2008, -7/+54or just bring them home.
- ProfessorLX, on 11/22/2008, -2/+26this article reminds me of in the movie predator when arnold throws the rock and the predator reverse calculates the trajectory and shoots a laser blast in his general direction. goddamn infrared vision made it pretty hard for those guys in that jungle.. pretty hard indeed.
- pitdog, on 11/22/2008, -1/+25Best anti-sniper device - another sniper.
- phenom2k7, on 11/22/2008, -1/+22At 2,500 a pop, not a ***** chance.
British troops can't even get essential gear like body armour. - godphase3, on 11/22/2008, -8/+26This is great, now we just have to get this on the gear of every single one of our men and women in uniform.
- inactive, on 11/22/2008, -1/+18or a melee attack with a knife
- poidh, on 11/22/2008, -0/+16Or a bomb dropped from a plane.
- poidh, on 11/22/2008, -0/+16Did that film seem particularly real to you?
- neillt, on 11/22/2008, -0/+15I just came back from Iraq, and we have this stuff on our MRAPs in a vehicle mounted version. It's called a Boomerang. We have had those for a few years now.
To be able to attach it to your gear somewhere is pretty cool. That's really what the story is. - darkstorm777, on 11/22/2008, -1/+16DONT SNIPE ME BRO!
- DigSomeMore, on 11/22/2008, -2/+16Straight from the MI6 labs. cool
- avaugha4, on 11/22/2008, -0/+12Fortunately snipers over there aren't terribly good. First shot hits are not the norm. The sniper's advantage over there is tons of cover and concealment from many buildings. This removes that advantage almost completely, as he will likely have a couple M203 shells and a few hundred rifle rounds shoved down his throat within about 5 seconds of his first shot.

..................................., - poidh, on 11/22/2008, -2/+12I don't think you need it on every single soldier.
- nubbz51, on 11/22/2008, -3/+13No, they have another device that can read the minds of everyone within 2.5 miles and determine whether they are about to snipe.
- renatoc8, on 11/22/2008, -0/+9What, you listen to enemy fire and determine their position? now that's a skill.
- OutlawSundown, on 11/22/2008, -0/+9Or an Abrams tank.
- avaugha4, on 11/22/2008, -1/+8Likely uses the differing pressure and acoustic signatures of the rounds typically used in enemy weapons. Ask any soldier who has been over there, or anyone who shoots a lot... a 7.62x39 AK round sounds a lot different than a 7.62x51 or a 5.56 fired from coalition weapons, even at range.
- inactive, on 11/22/2008, -1/+8im living in Australia and they've had boomerangs over here for yonks
- saejinn, on 11/22/2008, -0/+6I'm interested to see what kind of device NATO comes up with to counter their own invention.
- NodOfficer, on 11/22/2008, -0/+4Hm. I've seen Dragonskin armor before, but unfortunately, it was on a TV show that is known to overhype everything presented on it.
- TiMMY8765, on 11/22/2008, -1/+6bullets travel faster than the speed of sound, so you still get a sonic boom. unless you are shooting subsonic rounds, which aren't really a good option for a sniper. suppressors aren't like in games or movies
- inactive, on 11/22/2008, -0/+5that guy is such a ***** creepy weirdo
i bet he sticks his ***** in a bucket of grenades every night - rxbudian, on 11/22/2008, -1/+6Finally... High Tech combat device that did NOT come from the US on the news...
- Heteroclite, on 11/22/2008, -1/+6Interestingly, the picture associated with the article shows a silenced weapon. At 1000 yards this technology will be hard pressed to 'hear' anything from a well silenced weapon. The good news is that poorly designed silencers affect the accuracy and ballistics of the weapon. As long as we keep fighting poorly equipped and trained insurgents, this technology may be enough.
- Fartbandit, on 11/22/2008, -0/+5There are a few crack shots out there amongst the insurgents but the vast majority have neither the training nor the equipment to be of much use. I think that's what avaugha4 was basically trying to say. As my best friends bro in law says 'they cant shoot for *****'. :)
- oxymoron69, on 11/22/2008, -0/+5Sounds more like technology from first person shooters. You get shot at in most modern FPSs and you can see a bit of red that relates to the direction of attack...
It's awesome to see FPS fragging tech come to real life instead of just the other way around. - carshadfan, on 11/22/2008, -0/+5aimbot
- Slackdragon, on 11/22/2008, -0/+5A "Future Weapons" segment on the Boomerang Sniper Detection System.

Cheers to the Brits having made something smaller and more viable. - kelmaster1, on 11/22/2008, -2/+7It's greate how everyone relates this to video games.
- brown2hm, on 11/22/2008, -1/+6Hey this is what I do! Pretty cool to see it pop up on digg.
- EdwardMass, on 11/22/2008, -3/+7Team Fortress 2 just got harder.
- cybrguy, on 11/22/2008, -0/+4Funny thing; I heard about this 8 months ago, from military personnel who returned to fort hood. Its been in the field, just maybe not widely deployed. Or this new version is better than the old one. Or it just now was de-classified.
- B5tKUnT1, on 11/22/2008, -0/+4exactly. that device is called an airplane!
- AbsurdWreckage, on 11/22/2008, -0/+4Anti-Sniper device: .50cal BMG Barrett M82A1 and a pair of eyes.
- kelmaster1, on 11/22/2008, -1/+5they already have this technology, just not on every soldier. They use it with RPGs and mortars, they have computer systems in some artillery guns that automatically triangulate and return fire before the enemy round even hits.
- Slackdragon, on 11/22/2008, -0/+4Boomerang. That moniker is so appropriate on so many levels.
- inactive, on 11/22/2008, -0/+4Yeah, those soldiers will end up getting kicked.
- inactive, on 11/22/2008, -1/+5ProfessorLX:
hahah great post - fxu1989, on 11/22/2008, -3/+7>>"It is all about saving guys' lives,"
How about ending this stupid war? Sounds like the most effective solution.
(Damn comment box is jumping) - wtrwlkr, on 11/22/2008, -1/+5You're right, troll. I'm a murderer. Just like everyone who puts on a uniform. In fact, while i'm not replying to trolls on digg, I furiously masturbate to the pictures of the victims I took after murdered them.
- Fartbandit, on 11/22/2008, -0/+3Or a spy using backstab.
"Just let your weapons down and walk away!" - cuoops, on 11/22/2008, -0/+3They already have these in on their vehicles. This is just smaller version from another company.
http://www.defense-update.com/products/b/Boomerang ... - Slackdragon, on 11/22/2008, -0/+3Most "civilized" nations abide by certain rules of engagement outlined in the Geneva Convention, revised and clarified in 1949.
So, yes, you can "cheat" in war. Firing on civilians, for instance, is cheating. - runnernerd, on 11/22/2008, -0/+3You still have to get shot at first.
- cybrguy, on 11/22/2008, -1/+4Note to Iraqi Citizens, don't play Call of Duty on loud soundsystem while in Iraq. Lest your house be identified as a "sniper nest."
J/K ~I hope. - PhailQuail, on 11/22/2008, -1/+4Or a ninja
- TheKitchenSinkX, on 11/22/2008, -0/+3Hold up. It audibly announces it? That seems like it might give YOU away. Hopefully you can toggle that.
- Rodik, on 11/22/2008, -0/+3more specifically, it's a radar system that detects missiles and mortars bombs while they are still in the air, and calculates it's estimated destination before it even hits, allowing alarms to be sounded and people to get to cover. it also calculates the source of the fire so that artillery can fire back at the launch site, moments after the missile was launched.
