- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3oh come on, what the hell doesn't cause cancer these days? I'm waiting for the "Breathing air believe to be linked to causing cancer" headline....
- Pandaman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No wonder why soda cost less than water.
- Snarfy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2
Yuck. Yuck. Yuck.
Sodium benzoate + Vitamin C = benzene - GmorG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2scientists found that saliva causes cancer, but only swallowed in small doses by long period of time.
- bmarko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was just reading this story on my laptop in the Atlanta airport and sitting behind me were three guys from the FDA talking about it. They were saying that they have a meeting with the coke execs and were worried that they would presure them to bury the story. Scary *****.
- noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Awwww.
How could I stay mad at benzene? :( - a1programmer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Yet another reason we shouldn't drink soft drinks.
- HackWithRamzi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This drinks are not unique to Britain, they probably tested ones from the US, and Europe. I'm interested in knowing what the offenders were.
- snypa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1not gonna stop me from drinking soda, or any other drink.
the ***** thats on the hands of food shop workers is waaaay more harmful, as mentioned on the first post, the bacteria that money carries ending up in your mouth - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1People crying about cancer is getting old.... For all we know breatheing can cause cancer or anything else around us.....
- caldroun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like how, "it was revealed last night", instead of a Study over the last few years indicate...
- dimatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sweet, looks like im gunna die! :D
- ryogahibiki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Does potassium benzoate have the same effect? I'm drinking a diet pepsi right now, and that ingredient is right there in the middle of the list. No ascorbic acid as far as I can tell, though."
I was going to ask this same thing, doesn't look like anyone's answered yet though.
Also, I've read that cocoa has more anti-oxidants than green tea. So counter that soda with some hot cocoa and you'll be fine! :) - Tycho7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@Synae
How about tonic? A buddy of mine calls it tonic.
Thats a slight bit disturbing news. I wonder what soft drinks have them? It is just soda? Or are there other things. This is why I don't like getting my science news from a press release. The info is never raw. - beasty_dave_Mk2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0looking OUT* for us....where's that damn edit button ffs.
- ChrisTots, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lame stories on digg cause cancer.
- CrymeLord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't think the article is talking about soda. "Soft Drinks" don't necessarily mean soda. What soda company has advertised their soda having vitamin C?
I think the soft drinks involved are those fruity type of drinks that have the illusion of being healthy, but really aren't. - AUGTRON, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Neutrons cause cancer...neutrons.
That means nearly everything we thouch, everything we interact with, even we ourselves are carcinogens.
People are sarcastically saying that everything cuases cancer, but they are right weather they know it or not. Enjoy life people. - teknotant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*opens MT. dew* yum, me have cancer
- launchpadtt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does this mean that I shouldn't drink soft drinks with added Vitamin C like the aricle says?
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Shopkeeper: The frogurt is also cursed.
Homer: That's bad.
Shopkeeper: But it comes with your choice of topping!
Homer: That's good.
Shopkeeper: The toppings contain potassium benzoate.
Homer stares blankly.
Shopkeeper: That's bad.
Homer: ...Can I go now? - B0jangles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Who loves orange soda?"
"Kell loves orange soda!"
"Is it true?"
" I do I do I doohooo"
We need Russel Crowe here, NOW! - defubar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's all part of the master plan to wipe out Europe. The soft drink companies are going to slowly cause cancer in all Europeans who drink their products! With a whopping eight parts per billon, it shouldn't take too long, should it?
- Recluse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Headline: "Everything causes except smoking."
I'm f-ed if sodium citrate causes cancer caues I drink a lot of gatorade. - GrimReeper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This old news. And it only really applies to diet or soft drinks with artificial sweeteners. Still I'm not expert but even at 8 times the accepted levels your going have to drink SOOOOOOO much of this stuff you will have your teeth falling out and would have died of diabetes by the time u get cancer.
- pools, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Everyone is now so worried about this cancer causing benzene found in soft drinks, but daily millions of people all over the world drink millions of litres of diet soda without worrying how much cancer the Aspertame causes ............. Aspertame is poison and it is in almost every diet product out there !!!
- xx0xx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0coke yay! no cancer worries. only stomach and esophagus lining, and man-birth aka kidney stones.
mmm coke. diet coke / coke zero is about the only thing i drink. i am SURE thats a good thing. - sWeEtReVeNgE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just finished a sprite now 2, oooo crap...
- RexStJames, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sodium benzoate is found in a lot more stuff than just soda.
- fishymusic1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I stopped drinking soda a couple years ago.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not one person has asked the question. Why is the legal limit 1 ppb? Is something safe under that? Is something unsafe above that limit or was that number made up arbitrarily by a politician?
Numbers people, show me numbers! - ravuya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This happened a long time ago with Dasani water in the UK -- it was found that their extensive filtering process forgot to cut out all the bromate from the filthy river they were getting the water from.
http://www.newstarget.com/001028.html - terminalpariah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I honestly don't care. I don't smoke (including marijuana) and I don't drink alcohol. Everyone has their vices. Mine happens to be Pepsi.
- nuxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it's a bit sad that something as terrible as cancer has degraded into a tool for alarmist propaganda...that said, i don't drink much pop (yes, I am canadian) these days, and I eat mostly organic (when I can, 'cos that stuff is damn expensive) because of all the crap preservatives that our bodies can't process.
- Kitsune818, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I don't think the article is talking about soda. "Soft Drinks" don't necessarily mean soda. What soda company has advertised their soda having vitamin C? "
7-up comes to mind immediately here in the states.. Lucozade (sic?) seemed to be a fairly common sight in Pret and Tesco when I was there last, and I believe that is a fizzy soda-like vitamin enhanced drink. I'm sure there are plenty. Not sure if I believe there is a problem, though. - p1nhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Stay away from soda and junk food. Drink filtered water.
- ramsinks.com, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pop is bad for you!? no way!?
This just in - plants grow "up" twards the sun.
Maybe somebody should Digg this as well. - beasty_dave_Mk2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"There is an obligation on the industry to have as low a level of benzene as possible...."
AHAHHAHA...really? ya don't say....well sh1t...I guess they're looking for us all along!! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Haven't read *all* the comments but after seeing this on British news, I understand that around 200 drinks were tested for the chemical (of which there is substancial evidence it causes cancers like leukeameia) after similar tests in America found soft drinks with 24 (?!?!?) parts per billion on Benzene.
- roflcopterdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0100% of all non-soda drinkers will die.
- Kitsune818, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe this explains why Dr Pepper tastes so much better over there...
- nhansen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm starting to doubt whether people actually read other comments before posting...if it's been said once, you're not helping by SAYING IT AGAIN, and AGAIN, and AGAIN. Bug.
- GaleForce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This cancer scare is getting out of control. If I spent my time worrying about what could possibly give me cancer I wouldn''t have nearly as much fun living as I do now.
- cypherz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OK, so here's an article about this same stuff, only about US of A soft drinks:
http://www.nutraingredients.com/news/ng.asp?n=66084-benzene-soft-drinks-aba
Lots of stuff on the web about benzene in soft drinks. I'm still sceptical about the whole sodium bezoate and ascorbic acid reacting to form benzine thing. Its widely reported but is it pseudo-science or the real thing? - NewtonHeath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BBC says the UK was prompted by a US study.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4763528.stm - autobahn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is ONLY in soft drinks with vitamin C and sodium benzoate.
This one's easy to look for.
Not many soft drinks have this combination of ingredients. - Dufresne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whenever anything says 'low in sugar' or anything like that, they always replace sugar with cancer causing chemicals. I guess sodas have it so people don't see '100g of sugar' on the side.
All those sticks of gum saying 'sugar free' have the same stuff that these sodas have. - brownb2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0FYI Aspartame (in diet drinks) is also cancerous according to some studies, which I thought this article may also be about.
Its unfortunate a lot of people do not care or are unaware of it.
