  • scgirl212, on 10/27/2008, -0/+6these guys are archaeologists..we are better than historians since we deal with the physical remains.. even though there have been people in the Pacific for 40,000 years many places didn't start using pottery until about 5000 years ago. It either was traded first from the mainland and they started making their own and it took them a while to "discover" ceramics. Current thinking is that the technology was traded over from the mainland. Pottery present in a society also indicates some kind of sedentism as pottery is heavy and hard to repair. Basketry is much better for a nomadic population as it is light and just bounces if it is dropped. Unfortunately since basketry is plant fiber it doesn't preserve well, especially in such a humid environment.

And frankly, the government and the people themselves don't seem to care about these kinds of things. History and anything related to it is on the very bottom of the priority list.
    Whatever is left is sold to horders errr collectors who prefer to keep it all to themselves than share it to the public for others to view and enjoy. Hell, there aren't even any good museums in this country. There's no appreciation for history and culture.

  • ladyarcher85, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2In Manila, yes. It's the capital. Keep in mind the Philippines is an archeapelago. Not everyone can afford to go to Manila to experience being in a museum. The ones here in Cebu don't have much in them except the old books and paintings of the previous famous owners who lived in these old, kinda restored houses. Primary example is the one in Pari-an. Last time I was there the person who gave the "tour" was just showing us the rooms and blabbering something about the furniture and the famous priest who lived in there. When I inspected the things in display, wandering off from the group some of the antiques were not even dusted. Shows how much they cared for the place. Ask the average Filipino to direct you to the nearest museum, chances are they can't give you any answer.
